Fall/Winter 2014

Dear Class of ’53, I cannot thank you enough for the scholarship. Right now, I am in Philadelphia pursuing an internship in editing/publishing, and I am experiencing all kinds of fantastic events, meeting all kinds of lovely people and exploring so many different historical landmarks. This would not be possible without your help, so again, I cannot thank you enough!

Sincerely, Jacob Bedel

Dear Class of ’54, I am a junior this year, from Greendale, Ind., majoring in sociology with minors in philosophy and psychology. I am also the founder and president of the community outreach program Adopt-a-Grandparent, as well as a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. My other campus activities include serving as a Student Senate representative and participating in LINK (Love is Needed by Kids). I plan to work as a social worker in a state prison. Thank you for contributing to my success.

Sincerely, Lauren Harrison

Dear Class of ’55, I would like to thank you all once again for this wonderful scholarship. Your contributions are helping me graduate debt free. In my junior year at Hanover I now work for Professor of Mathematies Yefim Katsov as a teacher’s assistant. I also serve as a tutor for the general physics class.

Currently, I am working on a physics paper with one of my faculty advisors Associate Professor of Physics Leonidas Pantelidis. We hope to have this paper sent out to several physics journals by the end of next month. I am still a mathematics and physics major, and I still plan to pursue a doctorate in theoretical physics after graduating from Hanover.

This coming summer, I plan to do an REU (research experience for undergraduates) at a university with a program in high energy theoretical physics. I also plan to take the GREs and begin my preparations for graduate school. Once again thank you all so much for your contributions to my future.

Sincerely, Alec Hamaker

Dear Class of ’56, I am overjoyed to receive the Class of ’56 travel scholarship. This scholarship will allow me to take a course abroad to explore a real life Mexican city. As a Spanish major, it is important for me to learn about the Mexican culture, as well as bridge the cultural gap between the U.S. and other countries. It's a blessing to receive funding so that I will have the opportunity to make connections and become more globally knowledgeable!

Sincerely, Kay Branham

Dear Class of ’57, I would like to thank you for helping to make my experience at Hanover possible. In the past year, my studies have given me many unique opportunities such as working in a cadaver lab. These are experiences I know will benefit me greatly in pursuing graduate school. Hanover is a wonderful place to study, and thank you again for making it possible.

Sincerely, Erik Mann

Dear Class of ’68, It is my continued honor to attend Hanover College with the help of your scholarship. Since last year, I have declared my philosophy major, been re-elected as vice president of the Ballroom Dance Association, elected secretary and Student Senate representative of the Pep Band, and elected by the Student Senate to serve as an IRB (Internal Review Board) student representative. Combining everything is a lot of responsibility, but I am always able to find enjoyment at Hanover.

Sincerely, Gary Biever

Establish your own scholarshipYou can help recognize quality students and help make their academic dreams a reality by establishing your own scholarship at Hanover College.

The minimum amount to endow a scholarship is $25,000 (or $5,000/yr for 5 years.) We are happy to work with you to provide creative funding options, including class scholarships, multi-year pledges, bequest designations, gifts of real estate, and many other options you may not have realized were possible. Please feel free to contact us or ask for more information on our enclosed reply card if you have any questions.

Memorial Wall and GardenIn 1995, members of the class of 1967 conceived the idea of a memorial wall located on Hanover’s campus, envisioning a place that would memorialize the names of Hanover friends and alumni. They sought a special area to honor classmates and friends in an enduring way and to enhance the College’s beauty. The result was the Memorial Wall and Garden, located near the president’s home. A low limestone wall stretches from the entrance to the Daryl R. Karns Natural History Trails, halfway to Hendricks Hall. Next to the wall is a garden area with benches that encircles the historic Baldridge Columns, the original entrance gate to the College.

You can have the name of a Hanover alumnus/a or friend engraved on the wall for a gift of $500, which provides for the engraving as well as maintenance of the garden and wall area.

For more information on how to have the name of a friend or loved one added to the wall, call Kevin H. Berry ’90 at 812.866.6813, email him at [email protected] or check the appropriate box on the enclosed reply card, and Kevin will contact you.

As in all Legacy Newsletters, we offer the opportunity for you to request more information on this issue’s topic or to let us know if you have made plans for an estate or legacy gift to Hanover College.
