The camera is used to unlock the hidden geology within the landscape.

A crowd-sourcing mobile application for volcanic ash data collection

• Only a few samples required for

SEM.

• Tape-on-paper much simpler –

engage more people and collect

more samples from a wider area.

• Video was shared via BGS website

and John’s blog (volcano01010).

• Press Office did a media campaign

– radio, TV, social media

(Facebook, Twitter) – over a

hundred samples.

• Online questionnaire.

• Samples analysed quickly and

results sent to samplers.7
