Tier I: Phase-in between 1994 – 1997, with separate standards for passenger cars, LD Trucks below 6,000 lbs, and heavy light trucks above 6,000 lbs. No NOx standards for trucks above 3,750 lbs, or PM above 5,750 lbs. LD Diesel manufactured in the USA would all fall into the truck category but diesel cars imported into the USA would have to pass the car standards. Standards were not catalyst forcing.

Tier II: Phase in from 2004 to 2009.

LEVII: Phase-in from 2004 to 2010. Newly registered cars and trucks under 8,500 lbs have to comply with same regulations. Light duty vehicles in the upper range, between 8,500 and 14,000 lbs, and are classified as medium duty in this California classification.
