Sustainability in the UAE

The UAE leads from the front towards model for energy and environmental stewardship

It is implementing ground-breaking renewable energy and energy efficiency programs and is committed to reducing carbon emissions

Innovation and sustainability are two pillars of efforts UAE is putting in this area being the host of the World Expo in 2020 under “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future” theme, “ Abu Dhabi Sustainability week” , Next January, bringing together the World Future Energy Summit, the International Water Summit, the International Renewable Energy Conference & IRENA’s General Assembly

The commitment to sustainable development shapes both the domestic policy and international cooperation

UAE is working to reduce its’ greenhouse gas emissions. This is challenging due to the cooling needs – a basic necessity in a hot arid environment – the need to desalinate water, and an energy intensive industrial base.

Current OutlookProtection of resources = Efficiency in consumption ( 2030 commitment of 30% reduction in demand)

Demand for electricity is set to rise at a rate of about 9 percent per annum through to 2020

Energy security has become crucial for sustainable development

Improving the energy efficiency of homes, vehicles and industry is an easier short-term strategy

Integrated infrastructure planning as a pre-requisite to any urban master plan

Contribution of the construction sectorEnergy Efficiency in buildings is the quickest, most effective & environment friendly way to extend energy supplies & manage energy use

ETICS/ EIFS can contribute a significant share for sustainable & energy efficient buildings

Along with thermal insulation significant reduction in cooling and air conditioning running costs

Thermally insulated buildings account for lesser usage in electricity for climate control

Using more non-fossil fuels (solar and wind) will address climate change and energy security, but cutting energy consumption is also vital

Why External Thermal Insulation?

Thermal Insulation is the reduction of the effects of the various processes of heat transfer between objects in thermal contact

Heat flow is inevitable consequences of contact between objects of different temperature

Thermal Insulation provides a mean to maintain a gradient of temperature by providing a region of insulation in which heat flow is reduced

RAK TestingObjective:To test the efficiency and performance of the ETICS in extreme climate zone

Test:Insulating 3 standard cubicles (3x3x3) with 3 different types of insulation systems.

Testing parameters:Temperature and humidityHeat Flux TransferEnergy consumptions of air-conditioningSolar radiation

Monitoring System & AnalyzingThe appointed testing period is one year and the results will be reported

monthlyAnalysis of data will be done by the Passive House Institute and RMI in

Germany

Research work for the future

Collaboration with the American University in RAK/ Research & Innovation Center :• One year study of energy efficiency and performance

of 3 different types of insulation materials.• Supporting the students of the university in their

participation in the Solar Decathlon Middle East (SDME 2018)

Study with Rochester Institute of Technology Dubai (RIT Dubai) in the field of environmental sustainability

focusing on U-Value calculations for existing buildings and the effect of thermal bridges. The study will also

include a comparison/simulation of heat losses between ETICS and a market typical system.

Participating in EXPO 2020 Live, Innovation Impact Grants with 3 submissions: Sustainable Locally Grown Insulation Material Organic Photovoltaic OPV CoolFlex (reflective roof coating)

Expo Live is designed to harness the convening power of a World Expo by engaging a broad array of participants to develop and accelerate solutions across Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability

Masdar City We are working along with Masdar City on multiple innovative products.

Safety & Sustainability

Test and certify the ETICS as a full wall system under NFPA 285, which is a standard US test method for evaluation of fire propagation characteristics of non-loadbearing wall assemblies containing combustible components.
