The target audience for Top of the Pops is mainly girls with the age 12- 25. The gender split is 85% girls to just 15% male. Also the genre is also mainly Pop music.

He has been listed and ranked as one of the greatest artists of all time by many magazines, including Rolling Stone magazine which ranked him 82nd on its list of The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. The same magazine declared him The King of Hip Hop. Including his work with D12 and Bad Meets Evil, Eminem has achieved ten number-one albums on the Billboard 200 . As a solo artist, he has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide. In the United States, he has sold 49.1 million albums and 42 million tracks.

The picture of Eminem in Hip Hop connection shows him in a certain way as the target audience would like to see him. Eminem is shown wearing a shirt and tie which shows he is classy and smart however the tie he is wearing is red which indicted he had a streak on danger in him. He is also pictured wearing an expensive watch which again shows class and wealth. Also he is shown with two props a gun and a lighter. The gun is not being held but just tucked into his trousers. This could mean he is capable of using it and he is dangerous too but he has it tucked away to show he only uses when necessary but shows it to indicate his power. Also the lighter shows he is dangerous and not to be messed with. Also Eminem’s stance is important, the camera angle is from below which shows Eminem looking down to the reader. This implies Eminem is better that the reader and everyone else as he is looking down and you are looking up to him. Also Eminem’s facial expression shows that he is looking kind of disappointed with the reader and looking down to them as he regards himself better than them. Overall this image of Eminem shows to the reader that he is a powerful person and that he shouldn’t be messed with. This would make the readers look up to him.

The image on the Top of the Tops magazine shows Eminem in a different light. The image shows Eminem in a different light as he is more casual light as he is wearing a more casual shirt and two looped earnings. As he is wearing this he doesn’t look tough and scary he looks more like an image that is aimed to girls as the clothing, earrings and the way he is posing with his arms behind his head. In this image he is shown to be lying down and his face shows he is looking into the reader eyes and that he is thinking. Gain this wold would make the picture appeal to the target audience which is girls as he is looking into their eyes and picture of being more good-looking rather than powerful. Also the arms behind his head shows that he is relaxed whereas before he was looking fierce and powerful.

Representations of the Artist

The two contrasting magazines show the same person in two completely different ways. The Hip-Hop Connection magazine shows Eminem to be powerful, smart and dangerous as the magazines target audience is mainly men so the image would appeal to them as they look up to him and idolise him. On the other hand the Top of the Pops magazine shows Eminem to look more casual as the majority of readers are female so they would fancy him. If the image were swapped then the Hip Hop Connection readers would see a Eminem looking weak and that he had lost his way but if the Top of the Pops readers saw a powerful Eminem they wouldn’t like his as much as they might se the gun and think he is a bad person and not what they like so the choice of mage and camera angle is very important.
