Australian StandardIn mid 2005 the Australian standards

relating to emergency lighting were updated with several changes that bring

them more in line with international standards. As of 1st May 2006, the revised standard is now

referenced by the Australian Building Code. This means that all development applications considered

under the new code will need to use exit signs and system designs that comply with:

• AS 2293.1-2005 Emergency escape lighting and exit signs for buildings - System design, installation and operation.

• AS 2293.3-2005 Emergency escape lighting and exit signs for buildings - Emergency escape luminaires and exit signs.

The most dramatic change to the standard, is the move from the use of the word “EXIT” to the use of a pictograph on the face of exit sign diffusers. The

new standard also omits the use of an “arrows both ways” sign thereby requiring the designer to indicate the evacuation path in one direction.

The 2005 standard also reviewed the viewing distances of different size pictographs and stipulates that the maximum viewing distance of a sign must clearly be displayed on the

face of the diffuser.For full information regarding the changes to AS2293 we strongly recommend interested parties

Energy Effi cient LightingLaunched in 2000 the Stanilite Lumatec® cold cathode lamp combines signifi cant energy savings with the convenience of a user replaceable lamp. Utilising the same technology as seen in LED screens, the Lumatec® lamp was recently selected for use in the Lighting Council’s new energy effi cient lighting pilot programme beating competitive technologies including LCD.

Signifi cant features include:ReliabilityLumatec® lamps do not burn out! Lamp burn out is the most common cause for failure with conventional lamps, leaving the building owner with a potential occupant safety risk. Lumatec® lamps come with up to a 6 year (50,000 hour) rated lamp life.In that same period a standard fl uorescent lamp would need to be replaced in excess of 6 times and hence has a much higher life cycle cost.High operating temperatures are a minor issue for Lumatec® lamps unlike LEDs and hence cold cathode lamp life is not compromised in the tough Australian conditions.

Energy SavingsStanilite Lumatec® cold cathode technology offers signifi cant energy savings (up to 300%) over competing 8/10W fl uorescent lamps.Not only do they produce a clean white light but they do it effi ciently unlike many of the LED technologies on the market.

Rugged DesignDespite it’s slim appearance, the Lumatec® lamp element has been installed in a tough 7mm diameter outer protective glass housing with rugged wedge shaped ends. This has been done to ensure that anyone can replace the lamp without fear of breakage.

Quickfi t® Slide and ConnectStanilite® fi rst designed and introduced the Quickfi t® slide and connect exit in 1981. In 2006, the Quickfi t® remains the fi rst choice for designers seeking a high quality, Australian designed and made exit sign that is built to ensure occupant safety when it really matters.Pivotal to the design and success of the Quickfi t® has been the unique steel slide and connect bracket. Many have copied this award winning Quickfi t® design but none are a match for the original and best. The design features: • Wall or ceiling mounting using the same bracket reduces costs and

speeds installation. Only the bracket needs to be installed during fi tout which eliminates potential fi tting damage during construction.

The Nexus LX® system communicates over a dedicated data cable which provides both high speed communication and extreme reliability. Nexus® allows users to

GLOSSARY OF TERMINOLOGY USED

Australian Standard AS2293The standard that sets out the requirements for the design, installation and operation of emergency evacuation lighting systems for buildings. The Standard is divided into 3 parts:

Part 1: System Design, Installation and Operation. Part 2: Inspection and Maintenance. Part 3: Emergency Luminaires and Exit Signs.

Back PlateOpaque plastic plate designed to protect the back of a fi tting and allow fl ush wall mounting.

BodyThe body refers to the housing of the fi tting without the back plate (where applicable) or diffuser. The body usually contains the control gear.

Cold Cathode LampsUtilising the same technology as seen in LCD screens, cold cathode lamps are an energy and cost saving alternative to standard fl uorescent lamps.

DiffuserTranslucent part which fi ts to the face of a light fi tting in order to soften or spread the light over a wide area.

Discharge Test The current AS2293 standard dictates that an evacuation fi tting must pass a 120 minute discharge test upon commissioning and 90 minute tests conducted at 6 monthly intervals there after.

Dual Rate ChargeAfter an AC failure, the dual rate charger switches to a higher charging current for a timed period, then switches to a lower rate.

Halogen Lamp A specialised type of incandescent lamp used in downlight emergency luminaires and fl ood lights. They produce a crisp, white light and allow precise light focusing.

IP RatingThe Ingress Protection (IP) rating indicates the degree of protection provided by an enclosure from solid objects & water. The IP rating consists of 2 numbers eg IP65. The fi rst number indicates the protection from solid objects such as dust. The second number refers to the protection against water. The higher the numbers the better the degree of protection. The maximum rating is IP68.

Maintained A fi tting where the emergency light source is energised at all times i.e during both normal and emergency operation.


GLOSSARY OF TERMINOLOGY USED

Non Maintained A fi tting where the emergency light source only operates when there is a mains failure.

Peel Off ArrowsA versatile diffuser option offering a choice from either a “left from here”, “right from here” or “arrow both ways” Exit by peeling off the arrow.

Photometric Classifi cation

Classifi cation based on the measurement of the luminous intensities of visible light sources. The classifi cation isused in conjunction with a photometric chart to determine luminaire spacings for given mounting heights.

Power Pack A device for converting electrical supply to direct or alternating current at the correct voltage for a fi tting.

Single Point Unit (SPU)A fi tting that stands alone (at a single point) and includes its own rechargeable battery and charger equipment.When normal mains power fails, it automatically energises its emergency lamp until the power is restored orthe battery discharges.

Standard A Standard fi tting refers to an EXIT or PICTO - white on green.

Sustained (Combined Non Maintained) A two lamp combination of normal lighting and non-maintained emergency lighting located side by side within the same luminaire. One lamp is used for normal lighting and the other for emergency lighting. The light output is sustained even when the power has failed.

Theatre Mask A Theatre Mask fi tting refers to EXIT or PICTO – green on black, suitable for low light environments. Theatre mask exits do not have an emergency classifi cation.

Variable Rate ChargingVaries the current according to the battery “charged” condition. The rate is higherafter an AC failure but reduces as battery capacity is restored.

Note In a single lamp emergency luminaire the spacings in the C0 plane are proportional to Fig 1. In a twin lamp emergency luminaire one tube is maintained in emergency mode. As a result the second “mains only” tube interferes with the light distribution in several planes. For this reason, all twin lamp fi ttings have C0, C90 and C180 classifi cations as per Fig 2.

AS2293 DESIGNCONSIDERATIONS

The AS2293 evacuation lighting standard looks at an installation in two parts. Firstly illuminated Exit signs to indicate a path of egress (escape) and secondly emergency lighting to provide a minimum light level throughout an area to enable occupants to transverse through that area. While emergency lighting is not required to operate while mains power is available, all Exits must be luminated regardless of mains connection. Emergency fi ttings are available in several different types to suit various applications. Each fi tting has a photometric classifi cation that is used with a photometric chart to determine spacings for given mounting heights. The resultant spacings provide the required standard minimum of 0.2Lux of emergency lighting in the determine area. For large areas multiple fi ttings are simply mounted in a grid determined by the calculated spacings. Batten fi ttings have different spacings in the “X” (C0 & C180) and “Y” (C90) planes due to the shape of the lamp and refl ective surfaces.
