I am a passionate, driven and excited by anything creative. I apply myself to every job and project and strive to find the best solution to problems through thorough research, hard work and efficient problem solving.

I have travelled the world both as a young child and adult to most continents and lived in Australasia, Europe and Asia. My experience overseas has allowed me to understand many different socioeconomic backgrounds and it has also given me the opportunity to observe the vastly different day-to-day life that different parts of the world have to offer.

As a person, I always remain true to my style, my ideas and myself, to maintain a full and honest relationship with all employers, clients and mentors.

“Drunk on research, exhilarated by arcane details.” - Sheridan Hay, The Secret of Lost Things

Each design solution stems from a problem. Once the problem is defined, I investigate

how other products have tried to solve this in the past and form a wide understanding of

the product and their details and how the solution can be executed more suitably.

Consumer profiles, surveys, interviews and putting yourself in-context with the problem are

all key factors to finding the answer to the question. “Do people really need this?”

“I prefer drawing to talking. Drawing is faster, and leaves less room for lies.” - Le Corbusier

It all starts with a sketch. No matter how crude or basic, sketching is something allows me

to take the research that I’ve done and pour my brains’ contents out onto a page. It’s a

craft I’ve honed since a kid and I find it not only the most important tool in the creative

process, but the most profound form of self-expression.

“Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious and adding the meaningful.”-John Maeda, The Laws of Simplicity

Develop, Test, Develop, Test. There is no easy way through the development process. But

I apply common sense and good design strategy to reach design milestones as quickly

and efficiently as possible. I talk to people and bring together as many minds as I can

to find an optimal solution and put pride on the back burner. A good design solution is

much more important than ego building. No one is a one man band.

“Stop Sketching, start building”- Dennis Crowley, Co-founder of foursquare

Model making condenses all of your ideas into one package for the world to see. Your

design on paper may be solid, but it is the details, shown in real life, that ultimately back

up your original design intentions. I take the upmost care with all of my models and

prototypes to make sure the people who are seeing it, see it right the first time.

• My Grandfather has been in a wheelchair for over 60 years

• He lost his ability to transfer from his wheelchair into his mobility scooter and was unable to access his community

• The market only supplied cost effective products for people to transfer the whole body from a wheelchair into another device.

• The costs for solutions that didn’t require body transfers, were too high for a low to middle income bracket (80% if wheelchair users)

• There are over 380 million potential consumers across the globe who can afford 3-4,000 USD for powered mobility

• After defining the problem, I put myself into a wheelchair for 10 days and recorded what I saw and felt to gain insight into body transfers

• I interviewed 5 users, therapists and disability designers for greater insight

• I set up a very successful online survey reaching an international audience

• Massive market research, finding competing solutions

• Started concept generation

• Got user feedback on solutions

• From the results, I created schematic and design brief

Page 6: EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT DRINKING FOUNTAINS ELECTRIC WATER COOLERS

3P R O C E S S

• After the initial research phase, I generate as many concepts as possible

• My ideas had various engineering considerations that needed to be tested

• So to verify my design intention, I built a working prototype from an old mobility scooter belonging to my Grandfather

* For more examples of sketching please see ‘Rough

Sketching’ and ‘Sketch Rendering’ under the ‘Skills’

section of this portfolio.

• To verify my design intention, I built a working prototype from an old mobility scooter belonging to my Grandfather

• Once the prototype was built and tested with wheelchairs in context, I created a list of restrictions

• Keeping these restrictions in mind, I began modelling and developing the form

• I also built a full-scale mock-up to test the ergonomics of the solution with both 95% and 5% users to get it just right.

• I built various test-rigs to test the locking mechanism between the device and the wheelchair

• To perfect the locking mechanism, a CAD model was made to test all of the dimensions and verify stress tests

• The mechanism proved successful and I moved onto a full scale presentation model

24 days of building, or

216 hours

• Because of a lack in funding and the size of the model, I built it by hand

• The base was built from 64 layers of 6 mm particle board and sanded

• The tiller arm was shaped from high density polyurethane foam, resined afterwards and prepped with filler

• All circular components were wood lathed and sanded

• Stock tyres and grips were applied on finishing

• Each component was spray painted in a full size spray booth until perfect.

• Each piece was then clear coated for finishing and protection

• The final solution was given the name ‘IWA,’ which stands for ‘Independent Wheelchair Assist’

• The user connects and disconnects independently for temporary power assistance outside of the home via a mechanism and bracket fixed to the wheelchair

• The final solution allows users to access anywhere their wheelchair can go, giving them full independence to travel to and from places within their community

• The product can also have the wheels removed to be transported to be used in other settings

• The device uses x6 lithium ion batteries, enabling the user to travel 34 kilometres on a full charge

• It is powered via two 12V hub motors located in both wheels

• The concept uses the persons customized ergonomic chair, ensuring comfort while travel

• Top Speed : 7 km/ph

• Weight : 26 kg

• Weight without wheels : 16 kg

• The TRUE-VIEW™ device that allows you to take, view and share your own 3D photos and videos, directly from your smartphone.

• Users take photos and videos with their smartphone placed inside the slot in the front.

• The base of the device contains mirrors placed at specific angles, which split the image captured by the camera lens of the smartphone.

• These images are captured at specific distance to one another, similar to the way our eyes capture content.

• When the left eye views the left image and the right eye views the right image independently of each other, the device helps the brain combine the two images into one, and a stunning 3D effect is seen.

• The goal of this project is to bring user-generated 3D content to the fingertips of anyone with a smartphone.

• The Mini Vision Concept car was a team project, spanning 6 months and worked on by 3 teams

• The solution was a combination of inspiration taken from transformers, John travolta and modernized iconic England.

• Our team worked on the front dash, as well as all of the components leading from the shifter to the center console, including all of the air conditioning ducts and dials.

• Many meetings and strong communication between the other teams and BMW helped us get this right.

• The car is currently under construction and will be shown at car shows across the world in the coming year.

• For quick ideas and explaining ideas, sketching always comes first. It all starts with a sketch.

P H O T O S H O P & C A D R E N D E R I N G

• Photoshop rendering is the best way to add textures, materials and life-like realism to your sketches without spending time on CAD.

• I am also strong in CAD modelling. I am proficient in Solidworks, Rhinoceros and Maya. For further Software capabilities see ‘About,’ on page 3.

• Once a CAD model is formed, I specialise in creating photo-realistic renders. This allows you to see your product first, before you have to physically make it, saving huge

amounts of time and budget.

D E T A I L I N G & M O D E L - M A K I N G

• CAD renders may be a great way to check the design for feasibility on many fronts, but nothing beats holding or seeing the solution in real life.

• I take detailing to the next level with my model making to ensure that clients see the product right, the first time.
