2. Progress to Date (BC Task)
3. Next Steps
Our thanks to the European Commission for funding this project. The project team is a consortium of:
Ricardo-AEA (lead), Aether and AMEC Foster Wheeler
1. Project OverviewProject Scope• Task 1– Small-scale Combustion
• Task 2 – PM Inventory Estimates (Cond. & NRMM)
• Task 3 – Emission inv. estimates from Agriculture
• Task 4 – SOx / SO2 and Black Carbon– Task 4.1 SO2 and SOx metrics
– Task 4.2 BC, EC and OC
1. Project OverviewApproach1. Review BC EFs in the GB
– Verify whether the EFs are BC– Check internal consistency
2. Data Gathering– Consultation Document– Liaison with TFEIP, Workshop and other key groups– Targeted literature review
3. Update/extend BC EFs & text in the GB– Also collate information on EFs for both EC and OC
4. Where possible, derive EFs for BC, EC, OC
5. Handover of Chapters to the TFEIP.

2. Progress to DateReview of Current Guidebook Contents• Most “BC” EFs are actually EC• Initial review of GB shows some inconsistencies:
– Energy & Combustion in Manufacturing (1A1 & 1A 2) – based on PM2.5 inventory.
– Road Transport (1A3b) - EC is assumed equal to BC– BC EFs for road vehicle Tyre, Brake wear and Surface
wear (1A3bvi & vii) – based on TSP– Navigation (1A3d) - Lack et al.,(2009), includes results
from EC, OC and BC but only with fuel splits.
3. Next StepsNext Steps• Stakeholder Engagement (TFEIP, BC Workshop)
– BC speciation in international methodologies?– Identify recent and ongoing research / literature platforms
for updated sources, methods and emission factors
• Targeted literature review
• Draft guidebook updates– Text on speciation and definitions– BC speciation profile appendices– Consultation with stakeholders and research institutions
Summary & Close
Consultation &Sourcing Data• Publications within the last
~3 years• Key sources:
– USA – Nordic countries– TNO/IIASA
• Focus on BC• EC, OC also of interest
