E mCare, one of the nation’s leading providers ofemergency care, was presented with the inauguralCommunity Business Benevolence Award at Citrus

Valley Health Foundation’s Autumn Nocturne, heldNov. 11, 2006 at The Grove in Anaheim (see page 5).

This new honor recognizes a local business thatoperates within Citrus Valley Medical Center’s service area,demonstrates a commitment to and continually invests inthe betterment of health care for individuals within theCVMC service area, and functions as an advocate andsupporter of Foundation fund-raising efforts directlybenefiting CVMC.

“EmCare has been so supportive of the Foundationsince the inception of Autumn Nocturne,” said Board ofTrustees Chair Dawn Parish Henn. “The physicians havealways attended the event, purchased items from the silentauction as well as donated items, and have been sosupportive in other areas that I’m honored to give them thisaward this evening.”

Among the representatives who stepped up to the stageto accept the award were Angel Iscovich, M.D., CEO ofEmCare’s Pacific West Region, and Chris Richardson, R.N.,Regional COO, as well as Citrus Valley Health PartnersJ. Paul Holland, M.D., medical director, Emergency Services,Queen of the Valley campus, and emergency care physiciansEdward Gentile, M.D., James Jones, M.D., NormanOwashi, M.D., Ken Pak, M.D., and Betty Walton, M.D.

“As Emergency Department physicians, we’re not toused to being given awards,” Dr. Iscovich said as he acceptedthe award. “We wouldn’t be able to receive this award if wedidn’t receive help from our physicians, expert nurses,hospital ancillary support, and the support of theadministration. We really couldn’t do the job that we dowith out the medical staff supporting us every day.”

“The core of our EmergencyDepartment group really formed in the late 1970s and isstill intact, still practicing, over 20 years in the department,added Dr. Holland. “Over 50,000 visits a year – that’s over1 million visits to the Emergency Department, over 1 millionopportunities to interact with our community to relievesuffering and pain, to promote health, and we hope, savesome lives. It has been our honor and privilege in theEmergency Department to represent Queen of the Valley.”

In a video that preceded the award presentation,Dr. Holland recounted the founding of American EmergencyPhysicians during the 1970s, which eventually sought tomerge with a larger organization of emergency carephysicians for improved efficiency and greater resources.The group chose EmCare, he said, “because they had thesame core values.”

Emergency physicians wanted to continue to be involvedwith Citrus Valley Health Partners fund raising throughAutumn Nocturne, the 2100 Club, homeless clinics and localsports teams, said Dr. Holland, in the video. “We wanted tosupport that and when we merged with EmCare, we madeit very clear that we wanted to keep doing that. They weredelighted to be a partner and support these functions.”

“We take care of patients regardless of their paymentsource, as does CVMC,” added Dr. Iscovich. “We worktogether to support the community, and that is why wesupport Citrus Valley Medical Center.

EmCare’s 4,500 physicians provide services to morethan 300 client hospitals in 37 states, including many of thetop 100 in the country. More than 5 million patients aretreated by EmCare physicians annually.

T here are many ways to show kindness. You can seeit every day. One day it might be a neighbor whodrives an elderly woman to the grocery store,

another day it might be an offer to pick up your mail whileyou’re away. It might also be the hospital’s volunteer whoshows you the way to your appointment, or the E.R. nursewho reassures a frightened child that everything will be allright. Or it might be an act of philanthropy, like making acontribution to Citrus Valley Health Foundation inmemory or in honor of a loved one, or to mark asignificant occasion such as a birth, marriage, anniversary,graduation or promotion.

Each January 1, we all hang another calendar and promise ourselves to start anew. Yetin the health care industry hospitals, especially nonprofit ones, face the same seriousfinancial challenges year after year. We at Citrus Valley Medical Center are fortunate thatour community has been passionate about supporting the health needs of its residents.Inter-Community Campus, Queen of the Valley Campus and Citrus Valley Hospice eachbecame a reality because of the local businesses, charitable organizations and individualswho saw the need for these services and stepped forward to make them a reality.

It is vitally important that this level of support continue. Philanthropy is not just aluxury for health care organizations such as ours: it is our lifeblood. The generosity andforesight that created our hospitals decades ago must sustain us into the future.Philanthropy’s role in supporting the operations of nonprofit hospitals, as well as buildingand sustaining strong partnerships with donors of all kinds, is what enables us to remain aresource for people of all ages and economic status who live, work and play in the cities weserve.

That is why we reach out to you, our partners, to sustain your community hospitals.The capital needs and program growth of CVMC rely on the strength of your acts ofkindness, your philanthropy. Because of the financial pressures facing our hospitals, it is thework of the Foundation, and the kindness of our philanthropic community and friends,that is vital to maintaining our excellence on health care.

n every volunteer-driven organization, there isa core group of “go-to” people. They are theones who are especially passionate about the

endeavor, who step forward to offer ideas, whoensure that the work gets done, that the dream lives on.They are its public faces and its cheerleaders. In short, theyprovide the leadership.

Citrus Valley Health Foundation is no exception, andour leaders compose our Board of Trustees. They, as well asmembers of key committees, make time in their already fullfamily, work and social schedules for the philanthropy thatis so important to them, which helps ensure the future oftop-quality health care in their community through theirsupport of Citrus Valley Medical Center.

The Foundation has transferred almost $7 million tothe Medical Center and Hospice since 2000 (see bar graph).These funds, from government agencies as well asphilanthropic foundations, businesses and individuals, haveenabled us to meet a wide range of needs, such as thepurchase of vital medical equipment and improvements tothe facilities. Every penny is raised and spent with onethought in mind: the health of our patients and well-beingof the communities we serve (see box).

As you can see, the demand for sophisticated healthcare grows right along with the population of the East SanGabriel Valley. So, too, does the cost of providing it. If youhave a desire to make a difference in your own

Autumn Nocturne 2006 Honors‘The Heart of the Community’

Gilbert I. Martin, M.D., and EmCare received special recognition duringCitrus Valley Health Foundation’s Autumn Nocturne 2006, held Nov. 11at The Grove of Anaheim. Dr. Martin was honored with the annual

Laband Award, while EmCare (see page 1) was the first recipient of theCommunity Business Benevolence Award. The event, themed “The Heart of theCommunity,” raised more than $101,000 for Citrus Valley Medical Center’sInter-Community and Queen of the Valley campuses.

Three-hundred seventy people enjoyed exciting silent and live auctions, agourmet meal, and the song stylings of 1950s cover band The Wiseguys, as wellas a rollicking performance by stand-up comedienne Debi Gutierrez.

The live auction featured an all-inclusive seven-day, six-night trip to Jamaica donated by SuperClubsResorts and Andy Hsu, gold and diamond earringsdonated by Joanne’s Jewelry Co., an evening for 10at The Magic Castle donated by Patsy and WaltGorrell, a Disneyland Club 33 package for eightdonated by Rich and Gayle Jett, and a seven-nightresort vacation stay donated by Century 21 andCharmaine and James Rood. Among the dozens ofsilent-auction items were jewelry, handbags, week-end getaways, vintage wine, gift baskets, collectiblefigurines, home electronics and home décor items.
