CONCEPT and DESIGN PRINCIPLES

• BUS STATION AS POINT OF INTEREACTION BETWEEN PEOPLE AND THE SYSTEM

• NEEDS TO ADDRESS– MASS MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE IN AND OUT OF THE SYSTEM– LARGE CROSS SECTION OF SOCIETY ACROSS ALL SOCIAL AND

ECONOMIC CLASSES– DIFFERENTLY ABLED PEOPLE– CHILDREN, ELEDERLY AND WOMEN

• A BRAND IDENTITY, MAKE A MARK IN THE URBANSCAPE, A POINT OF IDENTIFICATION

• RAPID MOVEMENT

• LOW MAINTENANCE, HIGH DURABILITY, MINIMAL VANDALISM

• SAFETY AND SECURITY

• ACCESSIBILITY TO ALL SECTIONS OF SOCIETY

• CLIMATE

• URBAN IDENTITY

The Challenge:Minimize dwell time in the station:

The Solution:• entry and exit to bus for opposite directions staggered. So, if buses of opposite

directions dock simultaneously together, it will not create crowding.• doors of the stations match in size to the doors of the bus so that there are no

bottlenecks.• large doors allow more people to embark and alight simultaneously.• Match floor of the station to the floor of the bus so that there is no hesitation or

stoppage during movement.

Result:• smooth simultaneous movement of people to ensure the system maintains

speed. This reduces the bus halt time at the station considerably.

RAPID MOVEMENTEASY, RELIABLE AND FAST TRANSIT OF PEOPLE

The Challenge:• To provide ticketing and points of control for the system to work efficiently.

The Solution:• Two ticket counters at the ends are strategically located to ensure the off board

ticketing. Before one enters the station there would be mechanical control. Automated doors provided are another point of control

Result:

Rapid movement of people

LOW MAINTENANCE, DURABILITYSELECTION OF MATERIALS, CAPACITY FOR WEAR AND TEAR, STRENGTH AND STABILITY

The Challenge:• Easy to maintain, quick to clean• Minimum wear and tear• Survive vandalism

The Solution:• stainless steel wherever it is exposed to natural elements prevents corrosion.• stainless steel does not require recurring maintenance and can be simply

washed to clean• flame granite finished vitrified tile – tough, durable, easy to maintain• exposed rcc surfaces do not require recurring painting, look clean, weather well• use of wood only in places where people will touch

Result

Simple, easy to maintain, contemporary looking bus station

Access point

The Challenge:• A controlled yet open station• A public space that will not have vandalism, unwanted

elements, crime etc.

The Solution:• Entry and exit points on the two ends manned/controlled -

as ticket counters and mechanical control devices. • Stainless steel cables placed at regular intervals do not

allow anyone to pass through. Steel cables along the length make it transparent with minimum visual obstruction

ResultStainless steel cables prevent it to look like a cageMaximum visibility and therefore most secure, easy to

monitorSafe, visually and psychologically

The Challenge:• Ease of access to all especially the

marginalised sections of society:

Elderly, women, children, differently abled

The Solution:• Access through ramps for easy movement• At grade movement within the station: To

ensure smooth transfer from station to bus, floor level of station matches floor of bus.

• Various materials like crisscross sheets/tactile blocks in floor are used to give direction and caution for the blind people.

• A separate access for the wheelchair passengers is also provided.

Result:

Democratic, equitable system accessible to all

ACCESSIBILITYTHE BUS STATION MUST BE EASILY ACCESSIBLE TO ALL SECTIONS AND TYPES OF PEOPLE

The Challenge:• To protect from rain and sun• Minimize heat within the station• Minimize artificial means of climate control:

sustainable design

The Solution:• roof cantilevered from the support to protect

from rain and sun, especially near doors• plinth of the station is extended to shelter all

who wish to enter the system• cables allow wind flow: keep it comfortable• give sufficient natural light; artificial light only

at night

Result

A comfortable environment without using energy

Page 16: EMBARQ India - Talking Transit - Facility Design for Janmarg - Arya Architects and Abhijit Lokre

The Challenge:• create a distinct identity in the city that becomes the face of the system• the bus station needs its own image in the system so that the point of beginning

and the end for the user is clear• convey to the people that it is user friendly, welcoming• generate confidence in the citizens on the reliability and efficiency of the system

URBAN IDENTITY

A C C E S S I B L E A H M E D A B A D - J A N M A R GA presentation on design principles for facilities for bus rapid transit system

Page 17: EMBARQ India - Talking Transit - Facility Design for Janmarg - Arya Architects and Abhijit Lokre

The Solution:• The aesthetics of this bus shelter differs

from its surrounding by using stainless steel as a contemporary material as well as through the form.

• Slender, stainless steel cables suspended from a large all-enveloping roof that gives protection.

• The overall quality of sleekness generated out of material gives an image of speed and efficiency.

• The cables ensure transparency along with a controlled environment. This has an appealing, inviting quality.

• High vertical end elements become markers in the city, easy to view from far: name of the station goes on that.

• It will be these qualities which will invites users for the first time to the system.

Result:

The bus station has managed to fit into the variety of contexts that the city offers without losing its own character

THE PROTOTYPEThere was no unveiling the bus station – it was kept open all through the construction after which it went through a public scrutiny

THE PROTOTYPESome modifications

Page 25: EMBARQ India - Talking Transit - Facility Design for Janmarg - Arya Architects and Abhijit Lokre

The Challenge:• Change in the capacity of the system• Change in the movement system• Unknown factors in the city’ infrastructure

The Solution:• Adjust to local conditions arising out of soil and infrastructure

conditions• Maintain the basic character of the station to establish continuity

Result

Several variations of the prototype occur in the system

CHANGE IN CAPACITY OF THE STATION: PUSHPAKUNJHigher capacity expected since it is abutting Kankaria Lake, a popular entertainment place in the city.

Page 27: EMBARQ India - Talking Transit - Facility Design for Janmarg - Arya Architects and Abhijit Lokre
Page 28: EMBARQ India - Talking Transit - Facility Design for Janmarg - Arya Architects and Abhijit Lokre

CHANGE IN THE MOVEMENT SYSTEM:Soni ni chali where the bus station comes at the point of intersection of two routes which are not on the same grade. The two routes move in perpendicular directions

ADAPTIVE DESIGNone solution does not cover the gamut of

urban issuesModifications in the typical bus station

Page 30: EMBARQ India - Talking Transit - Facility Design for Janmarg - Arya Architects and Abhijit Lokre

CHANGE IN THE MOVEMENT SYSTEM:One way loops within the system also demanded a different kind of shelter where the buses were moving along only one edge. Hence, the other edge is made inaccessible and becomes more solid.

A C C E S S I B L E A H M E D A B A D - J A N M A R GA presentation on design principles for facilities for bus rapid transit system

The edge along mixed traffic is more solid, but retains visibility

Page 31: EMBARQ India - Talking Transit - Facility Design for Janmarg - Arya Architects and Abhijit Lokre

CHANGE IN THE LOCAL FACTORS:Fabricated bus shelters, smaller in size since the soil conditions and route of the city infrastructure was unknown.
