Summary:
• Kansas gained 10,000 total nonfarm jobs in July 2020. This change was due to a gain
of 6,800 private sector jobs and a gain of 3,200 government jobs.
• The unemployment rate decreased to 7.2 percent in July.
• In July 2020 there were 51,110 initial claims filed and 336,902 continued claims filed
for regular unemployment insurance.

week including July 12th. Reopening decisions were transferred to local officials on May 26, 2020. Counties following the ‘Ad Astra Plan to
Reopen Kansas’ moved to Phase Three on June 8, 2020, with recommendations to remain in Phase 3 issued on July 6, 2020.

Seasonally adjusted preliminary total nonfarm jobs estimates for June were revised upward by 900
jobs, from 1,344,100 to 1,345,000. Seasonally adjusted private sector jobs were revised upward by
3,100 jobs, from 1,097,400 to 1,100,500.
Kansas gained 10,000 jobs over the month. Over the past 12 months, the number of nonfarm jobs
decreased by a total of 68,000 jobs. Estimates are seasonally adjusted.
The private sector gained 6,800 jobs over the month, or 0.6%. The largest gains were in Leisure and
Hospitality (+5,200) and Education and Health Services (+3,000). Over the past 12 months, the
private sector lost 56,400 jobs. Estimates are seasonally adjusted.
Average weekly hours worked in the private sector decreased to 34.4 hours, a decrease of 0.2 hours
from last July. Average nominal hourly earnings increased over-the-year by $0.47 to $25.79 (+1.9%).
Average nominal weekly earnings increased by $11.11 to $887.18 (+1.3%) over the past 12 months.

has recovered 45.0 percent of the 144,100 jobs lost in March and April due to measures taken in the state to reduce the
spread of COVID-19. The U.S. has recovered 41.9 percent of the 22,160,000 jobs lost in March and April.

Private sector job estimates show improvement since April, but remain significantly lower than a year ago. In July, the over-the-year decrease in private sector jobs was 4.7 percent, the number of average weekly hours worked decreased by 0.6 percent, and real hourly earnings increased by 1.1 percent.

Seasonally adjusted estimates:
• The unemployment rate decreased to 7.2% in July. The revised unemployment rate for June remained
unchanged at 7.5%.
• Over the last 12 months the unemployment rate increased from 3.1% in July 2019 to 7.2% in July 2020.
Not seasonally adjusted estimates:
• The labor force increased by a net of 17,085 individuals to a total of 1,514,277 participants over the
month.
• Employment increased by a net of 14,922 individuals to 1,398,366 over the month.
• The pool of the unemployed increased by a net of 2,163 individuals to 115,911 over the month.
• The not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.7% in July.

• In July, there were 51,110 initial claims for regular unemployment insurance and 23,108
PUA initial claims.
• In July, there were 336,902 continued claims for regular unemployment, 6,564 PEUC
continued claims, 685 EB continued claims, and 352,117 PUA continued claims.
• The number of individuals receiving unemployment insurance benefits decreased by 5,453
over the month, and increased by 102,269 from July 2019 (includes regular UI, PUA,
PEUC, and EB claims).
• The average duration of benefit receipt is 8.5 weeks, an increase of 0.6 from last month and
a decrease of 2.9 over the past 12 months (average duration is measured with a 12 month
moving average and includes regular UI, PEUC, and EB claims).
