Hoopeston Police are investigating an incident in which five people claim they were battered, one of whom was taken to Carle Hoopeston Regional Health Center. According to police reports, officers and EMS were called at 2:10 a.m. Saturday to the 300 block of South Third St. for an unresponsive woman who had been battered. That person, a 22-year-old Hoopeston wom- an, was not unresponsive when officers arrived, po- lice said. Through the initial investigation, four additional people reported being battered, including a 40-year- old Rankin woman; a second 22-year-old Hoopeston woman; a 21-year-old Watseka man and a 19-year- old Watseka woman. The investigation is ongoing; suspects have been identified. A report was sent to the Vermilion County States Attorneys office for possible charges, which could include aggravated battery and battery. In other police news: Police reported two accidents took place during Wednesdays snow. No tickets or injuries were reported in an accident at 10:27 a.m. Wednesday at North Market and East McNeil. Police said Tangeva G. Stevens, 31, of Woodland, backed a 2005 Freightliner van from a driveway into a 2003 International dump truck owned by the City of Hoopeston and driven by James A. Prather, 58, of Hoopeston, who was repositioning a snowplow at the time of the collision. The second was at 1:12 p.m. in the 200 block of South Dixie Hwy. Police reported Kayla Waddell, 24, of Naples, Fla., was southbound in a 1997 Ford F-150 and was trying to turn into Caseys General Stores parking lot when she hit a 2011 Chevrolet SUV, driv- en by Carlos Sanchez Jr., 25, of Mount Pleasant, Wis. Waddell was charged with driving while license suspended and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and released on notices to appear in Vermil- ion County traffic court. No injuries were reported. An investigation into an accident at about 7 p.m. Friday resulted in the arrest Saturday of Joshua Has- bargen, 26, of Hoopeston. Police reported that a guy wire of a utility pole was damaged in the 200 block of West Elm. Police report- ed that Hasbargen, in a 1999 Dodge truck, said while exiting the alley, he turned too tightly and the side of his truck made contact with the wire. He was cited for operating an uninsured motor ve- hicle, leaving the scene of an accident and no valid drivers license and released on notices to appear in Vermilion County traffic court.
