Evil Spirits versus the Holy One of God I lecture at the nearby university on war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. Often, I find myself dealing with a blood-lust which seems to craze whole societies leading to the massacre of innocent civilians, the use of rape as an instrument of terror, torture and dehumanising on a systematic basis. It has revived my belief in diabolical powers. I suppose I had a rather infantile, Disney type image of the devil in my youth. I discarded that and saw human wickedness as the wellspring of evil in our world. But I now think St Paul was correct when he said: ‘Our battle is not against human forces but … we are struggling against the spirits and supernatural forces of evil.’ There are powerful spirits at work in our world: good angelic forces and evil demonic forces – sometimes called diabolical forces. The word ‘diabolical’ comes from a Greek word referring to something broken in two, something torn apart, something shattered which should be whole. Looking at persons and societies torn apart, it is obvious that the diabolical spirit is very powerful. But that spirit harbours a certain fear: the fear that there could be a stronger spirit moving through human history, a spirit of wholeness, a spirit of holiness: Could there be a Holy Spirit which could heal a person torn apart whether by illness or abuse or a deep sadness which divides body, mind and soul? Could there be a Holy Spirit which can integrate the personality and make it whole again? Could there be a Holy Spirit which could heal a group or even an entire nation divided by racial hatred, class warfare, unjust discrimination based on sex, religious conflict? Could there be a Holy Spirit which can overcome such alienations and can make a society, a community out of the divided group? The diabolical spirit found this fear to be well grounded when Jesus appeared at the synagogue at Capernaum, when the Holy One of God appeared on the scene of human history. What did the ‘unclean spirit’ which possessed a man cry out? ‘Have you come to destroy us?’ The fear was realised because they recognised Jesus as ‘the Holy One of God’. They realised that they were in peril: ‘Are you going to destroy us?’ Jesus’ answer was a resounding ‘Yes’, not in words but in action. He healed the man possessed. He made whole this gravely disturbed person being torn apart by the diabolical spirit. Our Lord continued with this mission for three years. He invites you and me to share in this mission. He empowers you and me to share in this mission. You and I are to use all our healing powers whenever we come across whatever it is which tears people apart: disease, long festering conflict within a family or some other group, deep loneliness – the most prevalent contemporary manifestation of apartness. That is our mission at the personal level, but of course, there are tasks at the communal, social, political levels also. These are all dimensions of a battle of immense scale going on: evil spirits versus the Holy One of God. What gives us hope that the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ will prevail? On Easter Sunday, Jesus Christ conquered the worst the diabolical power can inflict on you and me: the apparent finality of a death which wrenches body and soul apart. Jesus’ resurrection manifests the triumph of the Holy One of God: the reintegration of the human person – bodysoul. Let us become allies of this Victor over Death. That will put the fear of God into the devil. © Fr Michael Tate; [email protected] 31January 2021 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B

STEWARDSHIP

4th Sunday in Ordinary Time

““Brothers and sisters:I should like you to be free of

anxieties.”- 1 Corinthians 7:32

How much anxiety do we bring upon ourselves by constantly

worrying about not having enough or attaining more

things? God won’t necessarily give you everything you

want, but He will provide everything you need. Try this –

use the word “pray” instead of the word “worry” in the

future. Then pray for things instead of worrying about

them. (Accessed on January, 29, 2021from https://www.archstl.org/

Australian Embassy donates to Vatican sports program

The Australian Embassy to the Holy See has thrown its

support behind a program that promotes the values of

sport to children. Source: Catholic Outlook.

On Australia Day, Ambassador Chiara Porro announced

on a video shared on Twitter that the embassy would

work with the Pontifical Council for Culture, Sport For

Humanity and Fundlife International to fund sport-

related education packs for children in the Philippines

unable to attend school during the pandemic.

“Australia Day is a day to reflect on what it means to be

Australian and to celebrate contemporary Australia,” Ms

Porro explains in the video.

“As a great sporting nation, sport is a fundamental part

of Australian culture. It unites, overcomes diversity and

contributes to health.”

In the video, Monsignor Melchor Sanchez De Toca from

the Pontifical Council for Culture thanks the embassy for

its contribution

“Sport helps us to give the best of ourselves. It helps

you to grow in all of your dimensions – spiritually, physi-

cally, emotionally – and also helps to achieve a spiritual

life, rich and full.

“We want a world where we live like we play – that is

the values of sport are brought to daily life.

“That’s why it’s important to make sport available, so

that everyone has access to sport.”

THANK-YOU, THANK-YOU, THANK YOU

To all the wonderful volunteers who have turned up to the numerous working bees in recent times, we cannot thank you enough. We have moved mountains in terms of cleaning and organising many areas of the parish.

Our Lady of the Angels Parish deserves a gold star for being the neatest and tidiest parish.

Well Done Team

YOUNG PEOPLE UNITE!!

Pizza & Games Night with Deacon Jack

7pm Friday 12 February

St Gerard's Parish Centre

A few weeks ago Fr Paul outline a number of initiatives the parish would like to take up this year. One of these is to focus on the young people of our parish.

At 7:00pm on Friday 12 February, I would like to invite our high school aged young people to a pizza and games night at the Parish Centre at St Gerard's. This will be a chance for us to get to know each other, have a bite to eat, play a few games and chat about your ideas of what we might be able to do during 2021.

If you're interested, please contact me on [email protected] or come and chat with me after Mass or contact the parish office to register for the evening.

Ps, Parents, this will be a fantastic opportunity for you to have a night off! Encourage your young ones!

Blessings, Deacon Jack

In an age when most people were illiterate, Jesus appears to have been quite well educated. Some suggest that he may have spoken three or four different languages. He obviously spoke everyday Aramaic, as it was spoken in that region. Jesus also appears to have been taught Hebrew, the language of religious texts and religious practice. Greek, the language of trade in marketplaces, was a language that Jesus probably used when helping Joseph sell his carpentry products at stalls and markets. Finally, Jesus probably picked up a reasonable amount of Latin, the language of the Roman occupiers – he was able to hold a conversation with Pontius Pilate.

REGULAR CHURCH CLEANERS REQUIRED

We are in need of some volunteers to help out possibly only once a month

or even less as long as we have enough people to come in once a week

to dust and vacuum the inside of the church and atrium only.

Groups of 2-3 people would be optimum, so if you have a team who like

working together that’s great or if you are happy to maybe meet some

new people please contact the office via phone or email.

As always any assistance is greatly appreciated.

The Look to Jesus Lenten Program book

has arrived in the Parish Office , if you have

ordered a copy you can collect from the

office any time Mon - Fri, 9-5. There are a

few additional copies available at a cost of

$5.50 for those who may be interested but

did not order.
