Wellbeing has been a site plan priority for many years. Recently I was able to attend Melaleuca Primary School to see how their ‘nurture’ rooms and wellbeing programmes operate. I am currently speaking with staff about potential applications for Nangwarry to best cater for the range of students and their needs in our care. Each classroom is continuing to move towards a “homelike” appearance with comfortable spaces and options for students to work in. The activity/kitchen space has been renamed as the “wellbeing room”. We are decluttering it, changing the tables to be dining tables and will add a lounge to the tent and cushions in the soft furnishing area. We are looking to add sensory activities. The Boxall Profile will assist us to gain information about students’ most urgent needs, which we can turn into goals and programmes. Children are already utilising the space for small group or individual work. This has included cooking, board games, literacy boost programmes and speech work. On occasion the space has helped some children to calm after an emotional moment, assisting re-entry into class without distraction to the learning needs of others. We are very excited to have Matt McInerney (SSO, formerly at Mount High) on board with the educator team. He has worked across all duties over the past two weeks backfilling others on leave or at training and has now settled into a timetable across the week. Matt was highly recommended and will assist with delivery of our new “wellbeing” programme. This is supported by our Regional behaviour/inclusion support person, Rosie Copelin. She has provided some financial and programming assistance and will be onboard to support staff with this exciting venture. I will share stories and data along the journey with Governing Council and parents as we work to increase support to all students increasing their disposition to learn and achieve! Dates to Remember:

MASTER CHEF

This term we started with our Master Chef Competition. The students did a great job organizing

themselves and preparing for the day. They had to decide on a recipe as a team, write out a list of

utensils needed , a list of ingredients and a timetable for the day. As a class they decided on who

they would like to be the judges which saw Tanya, Tamara and Mrs Prelc get invited to be the

judges.

On the day the students worked hard collecting their ingredients , utensils and making sure they

followed the recipe. As the day went on they were challenged in having to make changes and

adjustments to their recipes as they went. When they presented their dishes to the judges they

had to explain what their recipe was and answer questions that were asked by the judges. Myself

and the judges were extremely impressed by the articulation and confidence students showed when

answering in some cases very complicated questions.

At the end of the serving stage the judges provided their critique of the meals and gave suggestions

students could use next time and their scores. Our final winners were Bailey, Jaxon, Tanisha and Ty.

As a class we discussed how we thought the day went and one comment that a lot of students agreed

with was that there was no arguing and they worked well in their groups.

The following day the class did a self and group reflection to focus on what went well and how they

could make changes next time, as we only grow our persistence and growth mindset by reflecting.

Junior Primary

Discovery time has been covering all factors of the Australian Curriculum. With children

learning problem solving, experiments, sight word identification, sensory skills and social

skills.

Preschool—Professional Development Last week I had the pleasure of attending a Results Plus Innovation Day at Kingston Community School. The day was designed to bring together all our Learning Cluster Groups to discuss our latest learning journeys and collaborations across the preschool and primary school settings. The main topic of the day was children’s wellbeing and how to develop a sense of agency in children. A sense of agency describes the feeling that you have some control over your life, that you have the ability to make decisions and that you have some influence in your world. It is a feeling that remains important throughout our lives. We can promote a sense of agency in our children by encouraging independence and self regulation or self control. Our recent focus on growth mindset supports the development of children’s agency. Our belief that we have the capacity to grow and learn through all the ups and downs of life.

News from around the classes…..

Middle Primary In Middle Primary we have recently had a classroom makeover! All students contributed to our new class design which includes new homelike furniture such as couches and dining room tables. The new layout and design of our room contributes to our welcoming and comfortable classroom environment! We have been loving our cooking lessons recently! We are currently looking at procedure in Literacy so have decided to create a whole class recipe book with students favourite sweet and savoury recipes included.

Garden News

Our garden is coming along very well. We have spinach, carrots, kale, bok choy, lettuce and

herbs growing very well. We look forward to using these vegetables in future cooking lessons.

We will be adding tomatoes and strawberries in the near future.

We participated in our first healthy cooking lesson last week. Using our own chook eggs and

recipes that the children decided on as a class. They were Chicken and vegetables Soup, All in

one Quiche and Spinach Quiche. The food was very tasty and the groups worked very well

together.
