RequirementsCustomer
1. Provide drinkable water from seawater.
2. Portable device.3. Provide enough water for a
family’s survival needs in a 24 hour period.
4. Usable without electricity and/or the need to charge batteries.
5. Easy to clean, operate and durable.
Derived1. Must remove at least 95% of the
salt from standard seawater.2. Fit into a backpack weighing
roughly 25 lbs.3. Must produce at least 4 gallons
of fresh water daily.4. Must be fueled by mechanical
energy only.5. Materials must be strong, easy
to clean, and rust resistant. Must provide instructions for operation.

Design Concept● Overall Dimensions(H x W x D):
40in. x 18in. x 12.5in.● Designed to fit into a custom-fit
backpack for ease of transport
![Page 6: EMAE 260 Detail Design Review](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062406/55c68d54bb61eb976a8b4747/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Theory of Operations● User detaches main syringe from
tank to retrieve water● Water is drawn in through a
“Lifestraw” filter as the user extends the handle
● User places the main syringe back into tank insert and pushes water through the reverse osmosis membrane
● Concentrate is collected in the syringe cover, which can be detached to expel contents
● Main syringe can be used to fill up water bottle, pot for cooking, etc.. Being placed in the tank insert is not critical to its functionality

Technical InformationFilmtec SW30-2521
Reverse Osmosis Membrane● Designed to filter salt water● 800 psig = 300 gal/day● Salt Rejection: 99.4%● Recovery Rate: 4%
Lifestraw Filter● Lets you drink directly from
streams and lakes● Removes 99.99% of bacteria,
protazoa, etc.● Reduces muddiness

CalculationsFilterApplied Pressure: 800 psigFlow Rate: 300 gpd
Applied force required to meet 4 gpd requirement:
A = [(pi)/4]*(.75)^2 = 0.4418 in^2800 psig/300 gpd = F/(.4418 in^2)(4 gpd)
F = 4.71 lb applied to obtain 4 gpd
Material: PVCMaximum Stress: 4500 psiMax Applied Force: 500lbFactor of Safety : 2P=F/A4500 psi = (1000lb)/AA = 0.2222inA =(pi/4)[(d+2t)^2 -d^2]4(0.2222)/pi = 4t(d+t)Assuming d = 8inRequired thickness: t = 0.0088in

Manufacturing ProcessesInjection Molding
● PVC: best suitable for three-dimensional structures (ie. sealed containers and large-sized receptacles)
● Ethylene Propylene: best suited for the complex/unique shape of the plunger (process used for plunger in medical syringes)
