SCHOOL CALENDAREltham High School Alumnus Success Story

Another success story from one of our past students.

I congratulate James Hawkins (Class of 2011, Andrew House) who last week left for the United States to take up a position as a pilot for United Airlines. James was a very conscientious student during his time at Eltham High School and he has fond memories of the support provided to him by all of his teachers and in particular, Mr Peter Seymour who taught James Mathematical Methods and Physics.

After his VCE, James was accepted into the prestigious CAE Oxford Aviation Academy where he undertook his training.

I wish James all the very best as he embarks on this new and very exciting career.

Eltham High School Swim Squad Annual Lap-a-thon

I congratulate all of our current students, staff as well as past students and community members on their effort during this year’s Lap-a-Thon, which took place on Thursday 1 November in the new pool of the Eltham Leisure Centre. The following is a summary of the event written by one of our Swim Squad Leaders:

“On Thursday 1st November, was the Eltham High School Swim Squad’s annual lap-a-Thon. We all gathered at the newly refurbished Eltham Leisure Centre with a very large turnout of 29 swimmers.

Everyone put in a massive effort in the long, hard hour with the total laps coming to 2522 and a total distance of 63km swam. On average, every swimmer swam approximately 87 laps!

After everyone’s hard work the swimmers had a well-earned breakfast, thanks to the canteen staff. There was none spared as the hunger took over!

Well done to all the swimmers and special thanks to the volunteers on the day and to Neroli Nixon, Indigo McKinnon, Amy Norman (Swim Squad coaches), Louise Heathcote and Phill Boyd for all their hard work throughout the year.

All money raised through the Eltham High School Lap-a-Thon is spent on Christmas gifts for deserving families in Nillumbik, through the Nillumbik’s Wishing Tree appeal.

I’d like to thank our Eltham High School community for their support of the Eltham High School Swim Squad and this worthy cause. We look forward to next year, which we plan to be even greater!”

Meg Whiteman (Year 9, Rutter House) Eltham High School Swim Squad Co-Captain

VCE Exams

Both the Year 12 and Year 11 Exams are progressing well. Students are consistently using the VCE Study Centre in an effective way and some are staying there until late in the evening. Teachers have made themselves available for their students and are working alongside them during this crucial period of revision in preparation for the final assessment.

In relation to the Year 12 exams, the students that I have spoken to seem to think that the exams are progressing well. Certainly, students are aware that effort and hard work pays off and we have been working hard to support vulnerable students to manage anxiety around exams. I wish them well with their results.

Year 11 students will be coming out of their exams and shortly after will be embarking on their two weeks of the Headstart Program for Year 12.

Year 10 Students will also be starting exams soon and post exams starting their one week of the Headstart Program into Year 11.

The Year 12 Valedictory Evening will take place on Thursday 22 November in the Nalleijerring Performance Centre at Eltham High School. This will be the last formal celebration for the Class of 2018 during which we will celebrate the achievements of each student and acknowledge their contribution to our school and our Community. We will then send them on their way to make their mark in the world.

PARENTS AND CARERS Payment of 2018 Fees Now Due

The Victorian Government provides most of the school’s requirements in the form of salaries, land, building infrastructure and maintenance. The Government also provides funding for curriculum and some student services. However, Government funds do fall short of what is required to deliver the enhanced educational Programs and the student services that our community expects. Therefore, Eltham High School Council, like most other school councils in the state, requests that parents make a contribution to cover this shortfall.

Your contribution enables our school to purchase a variety of resources to provide the best possible education for your child. As a matter of equity for all members of the school community, please take some time to review your family statement which was emailed to you in week one of term and attend to payment of fees that are now overdue. Payment can be made via BPay, cash or credit card. In cases of financial hardship, special payment arrangements can be made in confidence. Please contact Jacinta D’Avoine (Revenue Administrator) 9430 5118

CAREERS Arts Taster Day at Melbourne Polytechnic

On Tuesday October 23, myself and several other students Annie Beard (Year 9, Stewart House), Flynn Copeland (Year 9, Andrew House), Sophie Gibbs (Year 10, Rutter House), Finn Deacey (Year 10, Andrew House), Bailey Johnson (Year 10, Stewart House), Mia Reber (Year 9, Everard House), and Alexander Poynter (Year 9, Rutter House) attended a Creative Arts Taster Day at Melbourne Polytechnic. We got to try out some of their Creative Arts courses and hear from different staff and students about what they’ve taught and learnt. We got to try out an industry-standard TV Studio in a sports broadcasting session, brush up on our visual art skills, and try out photo editing. A group favourite was putting together a song in only 20 minutes. We learnt so much! Thanks to Mr Pringle for taking us.

SPORT Year 8 Boys Hockey

Our Year 8 Boys’ competed in the finals of the Northern Zone Boys’ Hockey on Wednesday 24 November 2018. They won their pool to go to the decider against Viewbank Secondary College. In this game, they lifted the standard of their play and worked cohesively together. They received more penalty corners and had more field shots than their opposition, but at full time, the score was tied at nil.

The teams had to be separated for which a penalty stroke shootout was used. After five different players from each team took a stroke, the score was four each. The shootout then went to sudden death and Eltham lost the game five goals to six.

James Dunn (Year 8, Everard House) led the team and Matthew Cook (Year 8, Andrew House) was dominating in the centre. James being presented with the runners up pennant watched by Ned Paladino (Year 8, Everard House), Jeremy Redmond-Emond (Year 8, Andrew House), Elliot Bryant (Year 8, Andrew House) and Elias Burrell (Year 8, Everard House).

The rest of our Year 8 Boys’ Hockey team at the pennant presentation: Oliver Matthews (Year 8, Everard House), Matthew Cook (Year 8, Andrew House), Blake Mason (Year 8, Andrew House) (Goal Keeper) Josh Weddle (Year 8, Rutter House), Harry Smith (Year 8, Rutter House), Alex Harris (Year 8, Rutter House), Evan McCormack (Year 8, Rutter House), Taj Andreetta (Year 8, Andrew House).

2018 SSV State Athletics

Last Monday, a team of 15 Eltham High School students represented our School at the State Athletic Championships held at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park. A perfect day presented itself for the pinnacle of the School Athletic season. Students had qualified through from our School Athletics Sports, District Competition and the Region Finals before making it onto the big stage for the State Championships.

To have 15 students represent our school at this level is a fantastic achievement in itself! Throughout the day there were some fantastic results with many students achieving personal bests in their events. Jack Itter (Year 11, Andrew House) ran tactically superior races to claim both the 3000m and the 1500m. Keely Boyne (Year 11, Everard House) left the field far behind to claim the Hurdles and the 200m and Matt Nicholson (Year 11, Everard House) challenged the eventual winner in the High Jump, pushing himself to a personal best of 180cm! An outstanding performance on the day was Elyssa Kenshole (Year 9, Andrew House) claiming 4 individual gold medals in the 100m, 200m, Long Jump and setting a new State record in the Triple Jump (11.98m).

Congratulations to all students who represented Eltham High at the State Championships. Overall, Eltham High School finished in 6th Position on the ‘Schools Tally’. A fantastic reflection of the dedication and hard work put in by all our students competing.

ART 2018 Arts and Technology Exhibition

The 2018 Arts and Technology Exhibition opened on Friday 26 October with an awards ceremony to celebrate the creative talents and achievements of our students. Our guest speaker, Tess Edwards-Baldessin of Baldessin Press, St Andrews, opened the Exhibition with an important and inspiring message for students to pursue their creative passions boundlessly.

The exhibition was a truly vibrant showcase of our student talent and invited viewers to go on a journey to experience being captivated by stillness and tranquility in photographs of the natural environment, to being impressed with precision and technical skill of Product Design works, to be challenged to question ideologies, social norms and gender roles through an interactive art installation by our student Feminist collective - The Violet Femmes. Our students also brought the awards formalities to life, with performances from the VCE Music Performance Rock Band, Kai Nolan (Year 11, Andrew House), VCE Media films by Paige Curtis (Year 11, Everard House) and Abigail Wilson (Year 12, Stewart House), and catering by students in VET Hospitality Kitchen Operations. Many members of our community came along to the opening awards ceremony and to view the Exhibition on Saturday afternoon, many whom passed on positive feedback regarding the calibre of student work on display.

The Exhibition was a collaborative effort over two days to assemble and a big thanks goes to our staff, students, pre-service teachers and volunteers who supported this fantastic celebration of student work. We wish to extend a very warm thank you to the Edgoose family, The Brock Foundation, Mr Wes Muir, local MP Vicky Ward and Tess Baldessin from Baldessin Press for their generosity. Their sponsorships allow us to reward our students with special art prizes and opportunities to pursue their talents. Lastly, thank you and congratulations to our students who were part of this years’ Exhibition and awards evening, your efforts, talent and passion for creating are incredibly inspiring, you should be exceptionally proud.

LANGUAGES The 2019 Indonesian Immersion Tour

Monday 23 September to Wednesday 2 October, 2019 (School holidays) We are delighted to extend the invitation to students (and interested parents) to join the Indonesian Languages Immersion Trip to Indonesia. This exciting, highly educational trip is only offered biannually and will occur during the Term 3 holidays next year.

An information evening for parents was held on Thursday 1 November at 7:00pm. Parents /guardians who were unable to attend can contact Cara Skeen at [email protected]

The adventure packed excursion will include activities such as visiting the vibrant and lively city of Jakarta and a bond-building visit to our sister school, Dian Didaktika. We will also take a memorable train journey to the cultural capital of Indonesia, Yogyakata. Here, we will be exploring the world’s largest Bhuddist Temple and shop at the famous Malioboro Market. An unforgettable experience where students will be immersed in local food and crafts while utilising and improving their conversational skills in Indonesian language when engaging with the locals.

This trip has been tailored for students to have the opportunities to increase their proficiency in their Indonesian language, development of intercultural awareness and increased independence. Students will also be able to develop their knowledge in areas including Asia literacy to navigate and succeed in a globally connected and culturally diverse world. This is a great opportunity for students to connect their classroom lessons with future education and career pathways.

This trip is open to students who are studying Indonesian from Years 8 - 11 in 2019. For further information, please contact your Indonesian teacher.

Terima kasih!

LIBRARY NEWS Reading Matters

Reading engagement matters because of both the immediate magic and joy that comes from reading for pleasure. When students are engaged readers, literacy and learning outcomes improve. An added benefit is the improvement of emotional well-being. The creation of engaged readers requires a partnership approach from schools, school libraries, public libraries and families.

Engaged readers :

• Get immersed in their reading. They read for pleasure and to satisfy their curiosity.

• Discover information and stories that help them learn and achieve.

• Are motivated to read and learn more, which in turn, makes reading easier and more enjoyable.
