HOLY REDEEMER PARISH ELLWOOD CITY, PENNSYLVANIA
Support all Catholic Education: “Great Beginnings last a lifetime.”
“Whoever loves father or mother, son or daughter more than Me, is not worthy of Me.” These words are not to lessen the due affection of children to their parents. Moreover, our Lord does not intend that children should withhold respect and esteem for their parents. As is seen in the 10 Commandments, God expects children to love, honor and respect their parents. Jesus honors the relationships between husbands and wives, parents and their children. The intent of His words is to teach that, just as Christ is above all creatures, He is to be loved above the nearest and dearest relations and friendships. Since Christ is our Redeemer and Lord, the Son of God Who came to free us from evil and death into eternal life, He is more likeable and beautiful than our parents and children. For those reasons, the person who chooses to receive instructions and behaviors which are contrary to the teaching of Christ, from their parents, for the purpose of pleasing them, has cut themselves off from Christ. In the same way, whoever drops the teachings of Christ in order to please their children has also injured their standing with Christ. This passage not only calls us to fidelity to Christ, but carries with it a beautiful promise. Within us is the presence of Christ, a spark of God’s divinity. “Whoever receives you receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives the One Who sent Me”. So, let us not only receive each other, but help each other to grow more faithful to Christ.
Good and Gracious God, Your Son, Jesus Christ
invites all people to follow Him and become His disciples.
Touch our hearts, enlighten our minds, and stir our spirit.
Help us daily to take up our cross and follow Him;
by living His Word and proclaiming His Good News
To those around us. May our faith in You increase,
may our hunger for the Gospel intensify, and may our parish be strengthened
as we learn to love one another as He has loved us.
We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen
