Godolphin will make a first
foray as vendor into the online
auction domain when it offers
18 tried horses for sale through
the Inglis Digital June (Early) Online Sale next
week.
It comes as Godolphin’s Australian arm
prepares to tackle the final Group 1 of the
season, the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m)
at Eagle Farm on Saturday, with a likely four-
runner team, while internationally, the racing
operation will be represented by Poule d’Essai
des Poulains (Gr 1, 1600m) favourite Victor
Ludorum (Shamardal) tonight as well as 2,000
Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) hotpot Pinatubo (Shamardal)
this weekend. Continued on page 2>>

“Globally, it has been a tough time
for the Godolphin operation, while Australia has been fortunate with
racing continuing,” Godolphin Australia managing director Vin Cox
told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday. “Most jurisdictions are gradually
opening with all staff looking forward to our horses getting back to the
races. Interestingly, the breeding operations have not missed a beat, the
stallions have been as busy as ever while operating amidst very strict
human biosecurity protocols and procedures.
“We are all looking forward to cheering on the royal blue colours in
some very exciting racing coming up.”
A key feature of the Godolphin operation has been their willingness
to trade stock through tried horse sales. Among their horses that have
proven successful for new connections are Sonntag (Teofilo), purchased
for $58,000 before going on to win the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m);
Pecans (Skilled), sold for $50,000 before winning two Group 3 races; and
Big Blue (Galileo), who won the ATC St Leger (2600m) before heading to
the UK for a Cheltenham Festival campaign.
However, while they have participated in plenty of physical tried horse
sales in the past, next week’s Inglis auction will be the first time they have
sold horses online.
“It is the first time we have gone down the online path,” Cox said. “We
do generally sell a tranche of racehorses at this time of year, but given
these unique times we are selling online. Over a period of time we have
built up a faith with the buyers, we don’t offer horses that have any issues
that will compromise their ability to go to the races. Transparency is also
the key, we disclose everything we know about each horse.”
Godolphin’s racing and bloodstock manager Jason Walsh added:
“Inglis have invested significant time and resources into ensuring its
online platform provides both vendor and buyer with a simple and
transparent solution to purchasing and selling bloodstock and Godolphin
is looking forward to participating for the first time.”
Inglis welcomed Godolphin’s involvement in their online arena,
with general manager of bloodstock sales and marketing Sebastian
Hutch saying it is “one of the ultimate endorsements for the Inglis Digital
platform”.
“Godolphin Australia is recognised not just as the premier breeding
operation in Australasia but arguably one of the most effective breeding
operations in the world,” Hutch said yesterday. “Its record speaks for itself.
The regularity with which it produces top-class racehorses is nothing
short of extraordinary.
“To have the opportunity to offer a number of horses of racing age
and with racing upside that are graduates of this extraordinary breeding
program is a great opportunity for us and a fantastic opportunity for our
enormous client base.”
Among the horses on offer is Esperance (Bernardini), a comfortable
winner at Rosehill on Saturday, as well as yesterday’s Ballarat maiden
winner Flensburg (Reset). Cox said that, despite their wins, they were both
still set to head for the virtual sale.

“Subject to those horses being
fit and well, they will be offered,” he said. “Once we have made the
decision to sell, irrespective of current race form, we generally sell. We
love following the careers of our graduates. Manseneta won today at
Gunnedah, Hemsted won last week at Bathurst and Ligulate won the
Tamworth Cup recently, plus there have been plenty of winners in north
Queensland too.”
Also being sold is The Driller (Sea The Stars), a regally-bred three-
year-old out of Group 1 winner Shamal Wind (Dubawi), as well as other
recent winners like Golwen (Lonhro) and Secretively (Dawn Approach).
Cox said: “To use an old cliche, there is a horse for every buyer, from
maiden performers to open class horses, and last-start winners too.”
Inglis Digital is now one of a number of online platforms for trading
thoroughbreds across Australia and New Zealand, with Covid-19 protocols
accelerating the move into and the growth of the digital marketplace.
“One of the most valuable features of the Inglis Digital online platform
is the fact that it’s a tried, proven and established platform with a strong
precedent of success,” Hutch said. “It’s a platform that is very familiar and
the success of graduates continues to progress at a rapid rate, particularly
over the last six months and as recently as a few weeks ago with Bella Vella
being the first Group 1 graduate.
“It seems like a very effective marriage between Godolphin and Inglis
in this type of sale; they have the stock and we have a massive client base
to take advantage of it. We’re looking forward to being able to host an
effective sale for them and hopefully our buyers will be able to recognise
the value that the Godolphin horses can represent and we are talking
about the success stories from this sale in six, 12, 18 months’ time.”
What makes this digital sale different from others that have been held
during the Covid-19 era is that the Godolphin draft can be inspected at
Riverside Stables at Warwick Farm from next Monday, June 8, before the
hammer drops on Wednesday, June 10.
“We’ve put provisions in place for the Godolphin stock to be
inspected at Riverside Stables, subject to restrictions and social distancing
requirements,” Hutch said. “Inspections are by appointment only and it is
very easy to organise through Brett Gilding, one of our Inglis bloodstock
staff members.
“It’s just an added advantage to have the facility which allows us to
facilitate these kinds of inspections and hopefully people take advantage
of the opportunity. They can meet some of the Godolphin staff, see some
of the horses in the flesh and get some further insight into the subtleties
and the particulars of the stock. Again, hopefully it helps buyers make
informed decisions and identify the stock they really want and try to get
some value.”
Before the sale, Godolphin will send out as many as four runners in the
Stradbroke Handicap, which will be the last Group 1 of the 2019-20 season after
the Brisbane winter carnival program was reduced.
"We couldn't be more impressed with ourStar Turn - Spoleto colt at this stage. He is highly intelligent, hasn't put a foot
wrong and is a horse that always wants toplease. He also has a
lovely, fluent stride andall his riders comment
that he has a nice actionand gives a good feel."

Trekking (Street Cry) will attempt to
join Black Piranha (Clang) and Rough Habit (Roughcast) as a back-to-
back Stradbroke winner in the modern era and enters off a second Group
1 win in The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) in Adelaide.
He will be joined by Kementari (Lonhro), seeking his first win since
returning as a gelding, and last-start Listed winner Ranier (Lonhro), while
last year’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Exhilarates
(Snitzel) is likely to back-up after her fast-finishing second in the Fred Best
Classic (Gr 3, 1350m) last Saturday.
“We look forward to the Stradbroke Handicap this week,” Cox said.
“Trekking is returning to defend his title. He has quietly worked his way
into that group of horses described as the elite sprinters - he has come
third in The Everest and won The Goodwood since winning the Stradbroke
last year.
“Kementari will line up, albeit not in the same vocation we had
in mind for him this time last year. Ranier is in a rare vein of form and
deserves his spot in the race, and Exhilarates will likely have the seven
day back-up, the same as she did in winning the Magic Millions last year,
subject to her coming out of yesterday’s race OK.”
The field for the Stradbroke Handicap and the other Group 1 on
Saturday’s Eagle Farm card, the J J Atkins (Gr 1, 1400m), will be confirmed
tomorrow morning.

Nervous wait for Superare Atkins startConnections of well-bred two-year-old Superare
(Exceed And Excel) face an anxious few days
waiting to see if he can sneak into the field for
Saturday’s JJ Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m). Superare
lifted his prize-money to $40,800 when he won at
the Sunshine Coast on Friday night but he will
need at least one horse higher on the ballot to
drop out when acceptances are taken tomorrow.
Superare, who cost $150,000 at the Inglis Classic
Yearling Sale, beat stablemate Way Beyond in a
photo-finish, and trainer Stuart Kendrick said he
would see how both horses pulled up from their
runs before making an Atkins decision. "I have
Cosmic Gossip already in the field and we will just
see how it pans out for the others," he said.
Two for No Nay Never
A debut victory for Never Talk (2 f ex Palace Talk
by Street Cry) at Tamworth yesterday provided
Coolmore’s shuttler No Nay Never (Scat Daddy)
with his second individual Australian winner
from his first crop down under. Trained by Kris
Lees, Never Talk came home three quarters of a
length in front of his nearest pursuer in a two-
year-old handicap over 1000 metres.
Bott tips a smooth Passage into StradbrokeA quick back-up holds no fears for Tulloch
Lodge as the stable puts the finishing touches on
Dawn Passage's (Dawn Approach) Stradbroke
Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) campaign. Trained by
Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Dawn Passage
will go into the Stradbroke after an easy win in the
Fred Best Classic (Gr 3, 1350m) at Doomben on
Saturday. The win helped Dawn Passage beat the
Stradbroke ballot and gain a place in the final field
which will be declared tomorrow. Bott said it had
been planned for Dawn Passage to run on a quick
back-up and it wasn't expected to be a problem. "I
think it will really suit him," Bott said. "We went up
there knowing he would have to run on Saturday,
and he has been in Brisbane early to give him
plenty of time. He will have a nice easy week and
this hit-out will have done him the world of good."
Fradd to ride Stradbroke day despite banRobbie Fradd will be able to ride favoured
horses in two Group 1s on Stradbroke Handicap
day despite picking up a suspension after being
found guilty of careless riding at the Gold Coast
on Friday. Fradd, who is booked to ride Tyzone
(Written Tycoon) in the Stradbroke Handicap
and Wisdom Of Water (Headwater) in the J J
Atkins at Eagle Farm, was suspended for eight
days following his ride on Fisticuffs (Redoute’s
Choice). The ban will start at midnight next
Saturday and will expire on June 14. Unless he
decides to appeal, Fradd will miss The Roses
race day at Eagle Farm on June 13. Tyzone sits
on the third line of Stradbroke betting as an $11
chance after finishing a close fifth in the Victory
Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Eagle Farm. Two-
year-old Wisdom Of Water is vying for Atkins
favouritism with three wins in five starts.
Bridge starts Everest climb with LegendLes Bridge is plotting an unconventional path
towards the Sydney spring carnival's premier
sprint after welcoming Classique Legend (Not
A Single Doubt) back to the fold. The gelding
has been back in work with Bridge for eight
weeks after plans to send him to Hong Kong
were shelved, and he trounced his rivals in a
Canterbury barrier trial on Friday. The hit-out
was a chance to blow out the cobwebs and see
where the horse's fitness levels were at with a
view to giving him at least one start prior to a tilt
at The Everest (1200m) in October. "The break
was too long if I didn't do something with him,"
Bridge said. "You can't win an Everest having
almost 12 months in between. We might just
give him one or two runs and get him ready
for the Everest." The Bob Charley AO Stakes
(Listed, 1100m) at Randwick on Saturday is
now a possible option for Classique Legend.
Victorian plans unchanged for Irish OTI starsOTI Racing is hoping to bring up to six overseas-
trained horses to Melbourne as Racing Victoria
officials canvas options to counter issues over
pandemic restrictions. While there is a growing
optimism about an international spring presence,
OTI's Terry Henderson says any participation
would be decided by federal government
regulations. True Self (Oscar) and Downdraft
(Camelot), two OTI stayers trained out of different
Irish stables who made an impact during last
year's spring carnival, have been set aside for a
return trip to Australia. "They are there (in Ireland)
and we've got to get them out here and how they
come out we really don't know yet," Henderson
said. "That will depend on government rules
rather than industry rules."

Mamaragan back for Golden Rose campaignThe Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) will be
a spring aim for the John Thompson-trained
Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) placegetter
Mamaragan (Wandjina) who has recently
returned to work. Mamaragan raced three times
as an autumn two-year-old and was sent for a
spell after finishing third in the ATC Sires' Produce
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick on April 4. It
was his second Group 1 placing after finishing
third in his bid for an historic Golden Slipper win
at just his second start at Rosehill in March. The
colt had made an immediate impression winning
the Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on debut in late
February at Randwick. "He's done so well at two,
I can only see him getting better. And he looks
bigger and stronger," Thompson said.
Caulfield Guineas on radar for IlovemyselfGreg Eurell is keen to target the Caulfield Guineas
(Gr 1, 1600m) with the lightly-raced stakes-
winning colt Ilovemyself (Ilovethiscity). "With
those sorts of horses you shoot for the stars. If
he's going well enough the Caulfield Guineas will
be the target," Eurell said. "It will all depend on
timing and how they re-program the spring with a
couple of these meetings, but it's certainly a likely
target for him. The preparation I think for a lot of
horses has been designed on a more traditional
basis at the moment and if that alters I think
that's certainly going to throw the cat amongst
the pigeons for a lot of us. A lot of these horses
are going to be up for a heck of a long time if they
change things. So it's critical that we get to know
where we're at ASAP so we can plan what we're
going to do with these horses."
Yulong breaks in Easter yearlingsYulong’s draft of 14 will head to round two of the
Inglis Easter Yearling Sale next month having
already been broken in. The draft, which includes
four yearlings each from Frankel (Galileo) and
Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), will be ready to go
straight into a racing stable from the sales ring
the stud’s chief operating officer Sam Fairgray has
revealed. “We are selling the whole draft and we
thought to have them broken in would help them
not be too far behind the other rising two-year-
olds that have already been sold,” Fairgray told
The Age. “Anyone who is interested is welcome
to inspect the yearlings at the farm and we will
provide reports from the breakers. It is certainly a
different year but we have some quality yearlings
to sell at Easter round two.”
German going from strength to strengthNew Zealand born and raised apprentice Lewis
German continues to make a name for himself
and added to his tally of metropolitan Melbourne
winners when scoring on the Mick Price and
Michael Kent Jnr-trained Heptagon (Jimmy
Choux) at Caulfield on Saturday. Although based
with the David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig
operation where his father Paul works, German
has looked outside for winning opportunities of
late. “Right now, I’m on loan to Enver Jusufovic
who I have been with for a couple of months,” he
said. “I have ridden a lot of winners for the Hayes
stable but I was a little limited in the opportunities
to get rides for other trainers. I want to come out of
my apprenticeship with a bigger range of contacts
and relationships and the move gives me the
chance to do that. I’m still available to ride for the
Hayes team when they need me, but now I’m at
Cranbourne I’m enjoying the change.”
NEW ZEALAND
Catalyst nears return to stablesClayton Chipperfield is looking forward to
welcoming back Catalyst (Darci Brahma) with
the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)
winner being readied for a spring campaign.
The winner of six of his seven starts in New
Zealand, Catalyst finished second to Alligator
Blood (All Too Hard) in the CS Hayes Stakes (Gr
3, 1400m) at Flemington, but failed to fire when
sixth in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)
and was later found to have an issue that put an
end to his autumn campaign. “He’s done super,”
Chipperfield said. “He looks a lot stronger and
more developed than when we saw him out in
public last, so we’re very happy with him. He’s
only a few days away from coming back in now,
we’ve re-tested everything and all is 100 per
cent. Nothing is set in concrete but the Golden
Eagle later on in the year, we’ve got that down
as possibly his final race of the campaign. What
happens before then, we’ll just have to see how he
comes up.”
Anticipation growsfor Time TestThe oldest southern hemisphere progeny of the
only son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) to stand
at stud in New Zealand are expected to make a
splash when they come up for sale later in the
year. Dual Group 2 winner and Ascot track record
holder Time Test has big shoes to fill to continue
the legacy of his outstanding sire, but with the
backing of New Zealand’s leading breeders and a
stunning crop of weanlings in both hemispheres,
he looks to have the credentials to do so. Time
Test stands the 2020 season at Little Avondale at
special service fee of $6,000 plus GST.

Eight for CityscapeCityscape (Selkirk), who was just edged out in
the 2011 Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m), was
able to score feature race success at Sha Tin as
a sire yesterday with Ka Ying Star (5 g ex Casual
Glance by Sinndar) taking the Lion Rock Trophy
(Gr 3, 1600m). The win provided Cityscape with
his eighth individual stakes winner. Ka Ying Star
was rated well on the speed, holding off the late
surges of Southern Legend (Not A Single Doubt)
and Fast Most Furious (Lope De Vega) to score.
Ka Ying Star raced in the UK as Urban Aspect,
winning three of his four starts before being sold
to Hong Kong. Placed eight times in stakes races
in Hong Kong, he finally got his first stakes success
yesterday. Cityscape stood for £5,000 (A$9,250) at
Overbury Stud in Gloucestershire this year.
19 for Lord KanaloaLord Kanaloa (King Kamehameha) made it 19
stakes winners yesterday when King Of Koji (4 c
ex Phaenomena) took out the Meguro Kinen (Gr
2, 2500m) at Tokyo, earning Caulfield Cup (Gr 1,
2400m) ballot exemption in the process. The Shogo
Yasuda-trained King Of Koji, sent off favourite under
Norihiro Yokoyama, swept home from near last to
score by a half-length over Ice Bubble (Deep Impact)
with a further half-length to Stay Foolish (Stay Gold)
in third. Lord Kanaloa stood for 20 million yen
(A$278,300) at Shadai Stallion Station this season.

158 for Deep ImpactDeep Impact (Sunday Silence) may have
added a sixth Tokyo Yushun winner in the
form of Contrail yesterday, but at Kyoto, he also
registered his 158th stakes victor in the Azuchijo
Stakes (Listed, 1400m) with Entscheiden (5 h ex
Le Sucre by Sakura Bakushin O). Entscheiden,
also prepared by Contrail’s trainer Yoshito
Yahagi, led home a longshot quinella with
Grand Roi (Daiwa Major) finishing second, a
neck away. Bom Servico (Daiwa Major) was
a further neck behind the runner-up in third.
Deep Impact died last year at Shadai Stallion
Station.
45 for Heart’s CryHeart’s Cry (Sunday Silence) brought up his 45th
individual stakes winner when Hygge (3 c ex
Moonlight Dance by Sinndar) took the Shirayuri
Stakes (Listed, 1800m) at Kyoto yesterday. Hygge
made it three wins from five starts yesterday when
the Yasuo Tomomichi-trained galloper won by a
half-length, defeating Shonan Hallelujah (Kizuna)
and Miss New York (King’s Best). Hygge’s dam
Moonlight Dance (Sinndar) is the year-younger
half-sister of 2004 Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) winner
Grey Swallow (Daylami). Heart’s Cry stood for 10
million yen (A$139,100) at Shadai Stallion Station
this season.
Contrail wins Japanese DerbyEmerging star Contrail (3 c Deep Impact -
Rhodochrosite by Unbridled’s Song) scored
an emphatic win in the Tokyo Yushun (Gr 1,
2400m), the Japanese Derby, yesterday. The
Yoshito Yahagi-trained Contrail went into the
race having won all four of his starts including the
Satsuki Sho (Gr 1, 2000m), Japan’s 2,000 Guineas
equivalent, and the Hopeful Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)
as a two-year-old. Ridden by Yuichi Fukunaga,
1.4 favourite Contrail settled handy in what was
a muddling-run race, stretching clear down the
long Tokyo straight for a commanding three-
length win over second-elect Salios (Heart’s Cry);
Weltreisende (Dream Journey) finished third,
almost five lengths from the winner. Contrail
may head to the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr
1, 2400m) in October, with Yahagi telling ANZ
Bloodstock News last week that the owner’s
biggest dream was to win the French feature. If
not, he may attempt to join his sire Deep Impact
(Sunday Silence) as a winner of the Japanese
Triple Crown by taking the Kikuka Sho (Gr 1,
3000m), the Japanese St Leger, that same month.
INTERNATIONAL
Classic action in FranceNine colts and 12 fillies have been declared for
the first two European Classics of the season, the
Poule d'Essai des Poulains (Gr 1, 1600m) and the
Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (Gr 1, 1600m) which
will take place at Deauville today. Andre Fabre will
be strongly represented in both races, with Alson
(Areion) set to join ante-post favourite Victor
Ludorum (Shamardal) and Coolmore's Arapaho
(Lope De Vega) in the Poulains, rather than wait
five days for the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket.
Tropbeau (Showcasing) has been favourite for the
Poule d'Essai des Pouliches since a cosy victory
in last month’s Prix de la Grotte (Gr 3, 1600m) at
Longchamp and will line up alongside stablemate
Tickle Me Green (Sea The Moon). Chief market
rival Simeen (Lope De Vega) and last year's Pric
Marcel Boussac (Gr 1, 1600m) runner-up Marieta
(Siyouni) have also been declared.
Rubaiyat warm order for German GuineasRubaiyat (Areion) is expected to be sent off red-
hot favourite to extend his unbeaten record to six
when he lines up in the Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen
- the German 2,000 Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) at
Cologne this afternoon. The Andrasch Starke-
trained colt faces just six rivals, including four
who chased him home when landing a Group 3
contest on his return at Hoppegarten last month.
British racing back with a bumper cardRacing will take place in Britain for the first time
since March 18 when Newcastle stages a bumper
ten-race card on their all-weather track today.
Elite sport was finally given the go ahead to take
place by the British government on Saturday as
restrictions that were put in place to help counter
the Covid-19 pandemic begin to be eased. More
than 350 entries were made for the Newcastle
meeting which was originally scheduled to feature
eight races but was extended when two races
were split due to the overwhelming demand. All
ten races feature the maximum 12 runner fields
allowed in Britain for the immediate future.
Seven for American PharoahCoolmore’s star shuttler American Pharoah
(Pioneerof The Nile) sired his seventh individual
stakes winner when Ocean Atlantique (3 c
ex Tare Green by Giant’s Causeway) ran out
an impressive winner of the Prix de Suresnes
(Listed, 2000m) at Deauville yesterday. Having
finished runner-up in a Group 3 contest on
his recent return, the Andre Fabre-trained
three-year-old was sent off the red-hot 1-5
favourite as he made all for a comfortable five-
length success under Pierre-Charles Boudot.
Irska (Hunter’s Light) just got the better of
Alfareeq (Dark Angel) in their battle for second.
American Pharoah, who has had 39 individual
winners from 101 runners in the northern
hemisphere will stand at Coolmore Australia
for a fee of $55,000 in 2020.
69 for Lope De VegaLope De Vega (Shamardal) sired his 69th
individual stakes winner courtesy of a success for
Kalifornia Queen (3 f ex Kaldera by Sinndar) in
the Gestut Rottgen Diana-Trial (Gr 2, 2000m) at
Hoppegarten yesterday. Now the winner of two
of her three races, the Henk Grewe-trained three-
year-old beat Snow (Sea The Moon) by a length
and three quarters, with Ocean Fantasy (Make
Believe) a further head away in third. Former
shuttler Lope De Vega, whose ten individual elite
level winners include Santa Ana Lane and Vega
Magic, stands at Ballylinch Stud in Ireland for a
fee of €100,000 (AUD$166,500).
Way To Paris back to winning waysWay To Paris (7 h Champs Elysees ex Grey Way
by Cozzene) posted the fifth win of his career and
a fourth in stakes company when taking out the
Prix du Gros-Chene (Gr 2, 2500m) at Deauville
yesterday. The Andrea Marcialis-trained seven-
year-old, who was winning for the first time since
July last year, beat French King (French Fifteen)
by four and a half lengths, with Royal Julius
(Royal Applause) another short neck back in
third. Former shutter, Champs Elysees died of an
apparent heart attack at Coolmore Stud in Ireland
in 2018 aged 15.

Te Akau principal David Ellis has
been appointed a Companion of
the New Zealand Order of Merit
(CNZM) in the 2020 Queen’s
Birthday Honours List announced overnight.
The honour is the highest-ranking title that
does not bestow a knighthood under the New
Zealand honours system and is only awarded to
a maximum of 40 people every year.
Ellis, who received the NZTR Outstanding
Contribution to Racing Award in 2017, was
notified by prime minister Jacinda Ardern
and governor-general Dame Patsy Reddy that
he was named a CNZM in recognition of his
services to the thoroughbred industry.
“It’s very humbling and somewhat
overwhelming to be honoured by your Queen
and country, that’s for sure,” Ellis said. “My
grandfather received the equivalent honour
(CBE) for services to the business community
52 years ago and my father was also honoured
with the Queen’s Service Order (QSO) for
services to the community in 1991.
“I had no idea whatsoever and it was a huge
shock to receive notification a couple of months
ago. We were in lockdown at the farm and I was
actually in the office selling the final shares in a
filly from Karaka, when an email arrived in my
inbox from the Honours’ Unit.
“I think it is an incredible privilege to be
recognised for services to the thoroughbred
racing industry, an industry that has been my
passion for nearly 50 years. And it will be until
my dying day,” said Ellis, who in that time has
grown his thoroughbred interests and dry stock
farming into world-class businesses.
Today, Ellis is a thoroughbred breeder,
buyer, owner, syndicator, administrator,
sponsor, stud master, punter, and operates
premiership-winning stables in two countries –
New Zealand and Singapore, with an increasing
presence planned for Australia in the spring.
He is a noted developer and encourager
of young people, providing them with
guidance, career paths and opportunities.
He is a passionate promoter of New Zealand
thoroughbreds and the New Zealand brand
and contributes immensely to his local area, Te
Akau, especially supporting young farmers with
advice and guidance. He is also co-patron, with
his wife Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM, of Riding
for the Disabled (RDA Hamilton).
Ellis’ exceptional record of voluntary service to
thoroughbred racing is well acknowledged in his
royal honour. He is a life member of the Waikato
Racing Club, after being a board member for 18
years, including five years as chairman. A huge
patriot and believer in the New Zealand racing
industry, during his time as chairman of the Waikato
District Committee, he spent seven years on the NZ
Racing Conference/NZTR Executive and served
as a member of the NZ Thoroughbred Marketing
(NZTM) Board.
Brought up rurally in Pakuranga, and a
member of the Howick Pony Club, Ellis boarded
from the age of nine and represented King’s College
Auckland at rugby, cricket, swimming and rowing.
He developed a love of animals and farming
life and decided his future in his first year out
of school when attending the Flock House
Agricultural College in Bulls, where the principal
was ex-All Black coach J J Stewart. He followed
with a Diploma Degree in Agriculture, which
required three years practical farming experience,
from Massey University.
After working various jobs around the clock
for four years, Ellis purchased 500 acres in the
mid-1970s at Waimai Valley. In 1981, he bought
a neighbouring farm to develop Te Akau Stud
which has grown to 4,000 acres with 2,500 cattle
and over 4,000 sheep, including about 3,000
breeding ewes. His farm and racing operations,
in both New Zealand and Singapore, proudly
carry the name of the small rural district where
he and his wife Karyn reside.

Ellis recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours
David Ellis TE AKAU
I think it is an incredible
privilege to be recognised for services to the thoroughbred racing industry, an industry that has been my passion for nearly 50 years
| 13 |
Ellis celebrated his first Group 1 winner as
an owner when Cosmetique (Barcas) won the
1986 Easter Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) at Ellerslie,
while in 2009 he was honoured at the Waikato
Business Excellence Awards with the Gallagher
Group Agriculture and Primary Production
Award.
“I’ve often said to people that I don’t feel that
I go to work because, put simply, I love racing
and farming,” he said. “I think the strength of
my passion for those two industries has not only
helped me put as much into it as I can, but also
enabled me to provide employment and careers
for many people, especially young people.”
Te Akau Racing and Te Akau Stud combined
currently employ 85 people.
“I feel the honour also recognises the
incredible contribution from everyone that has
worked for Te Akau over the years and presently,”
Ellis said. “The thoroughbred industry is
extremely hands-on and I truly believe that I am
accepting this recognition on behalf of the team,
and what a team Te Akau has.
“Karyn (Fenton-Ellis MNZM), my wife, has
already received a Queen’s Honour for services
to racing, arts, and the community. She is a
massively important part of my life and our
business and I couldn’t do what we do without
her. Last year we bought and sold 70 horses and
I couldn’t have done that without her help.
“For the second time to 2020, Te Akau
Racing stables have won premierships in both
New Zealand and Singapore in the same season
which is a huge thrill.
“Our trainer in Singapore, Mark Walker, won
five premierships in New Zealand before we
established our stable at Kranji racecourse in late
2010 and he has now won three further premiership
titles in Singapore. He came to work for me the day
he left school and has developed into a world-class
trainer, great friend and business partner.
“Mark has been a huge part of the success
of Te Akau Racing, as has Jamie Richards who
trained 11 Group 1 winners for us this season,
including three in Australia. He has helped Te
Akau Racing become recognised as the ninth
best training operation in the world, as rated by
the Global Rankings.”
Many successful jockeys kick-started their
careers in the famous tangerine colours – none
more notable than Opie Bosson who heads
the list of Te Akau apprentice jockeys that have
risen to the top.
“Opie has also been a huge part in the
success of the stable,” Ellis said. “Not just as our
current number one rider, but he started with
me when he was 14 years old and we’ve become
very good friends. It was fantastic to see him
break the all-time record of Group 1 wins in
New Zealand, held by the legendary Lance
O’Sullivan ONZM, and to claim it on a Te Akau
horse last season at Ellerslie was a big thrill.
“There have been many highlights over the
years on the race track, but winning two Group
1s in half an hour in Sydney this season, with
Probabeel and Te Akau Shark, was incredible.
Then, a week later we had Cool Aza Beel and
Avantage winning Group 1s within an hour of
each other at Ellerslie. These sorts of results are
very difficult to achieve and were quite something
to follow on from Cool Aza Beel becoming our
fourth consecutive Karaka Million 2YO winner
and Probabeel creating history by winning both
the Karaka Million 2YO and Karaka Million 3YO
Classic in January at Ellerslie.”
While they were massive feats early in 2020,
they served to continue a great season which
had already seen Horse of the Year Melody
Belle (Commands) make history in the Bostock
New Zealand Spring Carnival Triple Crown at
Hastings – a Group 1 winning treble over 1400
metres, 1600 metres, and 2040 metres.
The ‘King of Karaka’, Ellis retained his mantle
as leading buyer for the 15th consecutive year at
the completion of the New Zealand Bloodstock
National Yearling Sales Series in January at
Karaka.
Going back to 2004, Ellis upped the ante
when purchasing a Danehill – Grand Echezeaux
(Zabeel) yearling colt for $1.1m, from the draft
of Pencarrow Stud, at Karaka. Bought on spec,
Ellis was able to articulate the vision of what
he was trying to achieve in strengthening and
enhancing the NZ industry and put a syndicate
of owners together in 24 hours.

Named Darci Brahma (Danehill), he was
trained by Mark Walker to win five Group 1s
in New Zealand and Australia and notched
champion two-year-old, champion three-year-
old, and champion sprinter-miler as a four-
year-old before becoming a multiple champion
stallion and leading sire in the New Zealand
breeding industry.
Since then, Ellis has purchased other
yearling colts for syndication that raced with
distinction at the highest level and seven have
gone on to stand at stud in New Zealand and
Australia. Stallions like the late Burgundy
(Redoute’s Choice), Embellish (Savabeel)
and Rock ‘N’ Pop (Fastnet Rock), as well as
Xtravagant (Pentire) - whose first crop yearlings
look remarkable - and Heroic Valour (Fastnet
Rock), both standing in Australia.
Ellis has bought an enormous number of
athletic and top-performing thoroughbreds,
encouraged hundreds of new owners into the
industry, while between horses and staff they
have won over 40 champion titles.
“I was frustrated seeing our top bloodstock
leaving New Zealand because I think it’s
important for race-goers to see the best of our
breed race in New Zealand, before they race in
Australia and other countries,” Ellis said.
Never one to rest on the laurels of success,
Ellis has a clear focus for taking Te Akau Racing
to a higher level over the next 18 months.
“We’ve secured 12 boxes at Flemington
for the coming season, but they’re all for
horses of ours that have raced and performed
successfully here before we send them over to
Australia,” he said
“It’s important for our breeding industry
that we continue to retain well-bred horses to
race here and it’s important for the credibility
of our racing industry that our good horses go
on to perform well on the international stage,
which over the years they have done with such
distinction.
“At the time of Darci Brahma we also had
Princess Coup who won $4.2 million before
selling as a broodmare for $3 million. However,
Distinctly Secret was probably the horse
closest to my heart and his success allowed the
business to develop some real momentum. I
bred him myself, owned most of him, and he
won nearly $2 million which was a big help 18
years ago.
Another ambassador of the New Zealand
thoroughbred industry, New Zealand
Bloodstock chairman Joe Walls spends plenty
of time working with Ellis and the pair have
formed a great friendship.
“I can’t think of anyone more fitting in
the industry for this honour to be bestowed
upon,” Walls said. “He’s been a tireless worker
in all facets, whether racing administration, or
community, and he’s grown his racing business
to great proportions.
“He’s supported breeders by buying
yearlings every year in record numbers and
record values, and there is no one in the
modern era that I can think of who would be
more worthy.
“A lot of people don’t know David or DC, as
we call him, but he has got a kind heart. He’s
very generous and a bloke that looks after his
fellow man. He’s always been very good to
his staff and there are very few chinks in DC’s
armour if you know him well.
“I’ve known him for what must be 40
years, from when he started at Te Akau. I
remember him giving me a call to go out there.
I wondered where I was going, out to the coast
somewhere. I got to his farm, which wasn’t as
magnificent as it is today. He really was raw
and didn’t have much of an idea about horses,
but he listened.
“We formed a good relationship in all sorts
of avenues. He has always been very loyal and
I can’t speak highly enough about him. He’s
firm but I think he’s fair and I think he has
shown that in all the industry components and
positions he’s been involved in. He has a very
good grasp of the industry.
“He has put together this marvellous
business which is Te Akau Racing. It’s world-
class and he’s got a lot of very good people
around him. Karyn, Mark Walker, Jamie
Richards, even his vets and other industry
professionals.
“Importantly for New Zealand, DC is
recognised all over the world for what he has
accomplished and continues to achieve.”

Ka Ying Star (Cityscape) maintained
Tony Cruz’s advance towards the
top of the trainers’ premiership
with an overdue success in the
Lion Rock Trophy (Gr 3, 1600m) at Sha Tin
yesterday.
“I’m going to put the pedal to the metal!”
Cruz said after the British import had pushed
the stable’s tally to 52 wins.
That puts the two-time champion trainer
five shy of long-time leader Ricky Yiu, who
has clocked only one win from the last seven
meetings.
Ka Ying Star had classy form in the book
already this term, including a couple of Group
1 placings, but had not nailed a stakes win and
was without a win of any kind in 13 months.
“The horse has deserved this, he’s run some
good races in Group 1 company but he has
hardly any wins on his record so this is a good
way for him to end his season,” Cruz said.
“Everything went his way today; he had to
dictate this race and if he did, I knew he’d be
hard to run down. Chad rode the perfect race
and he clocked 1:32.95, that’s a decent time so
he’s shown his quality.”
The five-year-old secured the leader’s spot
under Chad Schofield, who slowed the tempo
in the back straight before kicking on down the
final stretch. The game bay responded to every
urging, holding off the driving challenges of
Southern Legend (Not A Single Doubt) and Fast
Most Furious (Lope De Vega).
“Once I got the lead and got the fence I was
able to give my horse a breather,” Schofield
said. “Time To Celebrate had made us work a
bit through a pretty solid first section and he
wanted to put pressure on me again around the
turn. If anything, that spurred my horse along
and switched him on because usually he's very
relaxed out in front. Credit to him with the big
weight, he was strong to the line.”
Schofield was delighted to have ended a
personal Group-race drought going back to his
success on Rattan (Savabeel) in the Sprint Cup
(Gr 2, 1200m) in April last year. Ka Ying Star’s
score also took the rider to 38 wins, matching
his personal best for a Hong Kong season.
The rider reached a new peak of 39 wins
when driving Mr Croissant (Darci Brahma) to
success in the finale, the Class 2 Amah Rock
Handicap (1200m).
“I hope the (Group races) keep coming,”
Schofield said. “I haven't had many big winners
bar today but numbers-wise we've equalled my
best, so hopefully we can keep kicking strong
for next season.
“I only started riding for Tony this season and
to ride a Group 3 winner for him is very good.”
Cruz will give Ka Ying Star a well-earned
rest before pointing towards the LONGINES
Hong Kong International Races in December.
“We’ll try again next season,” the handler said.
“There’s nothing else for him this season so we’ll
have to go with what the programme gives us, so
he'll definitely be aimed at the Hong Kong Mile.”
Dreamer impresses at first start
Vincent Ho had to settle for second on
Southern Legend but earlier enjoyed an easy
win on a potential future star when Winning
Dreamer (Deep Field) lived up to expectations
with a successful debut in the Class 4 Piper’s
Hill Handicap (1000m). The Frankie Lor-
trained three-year-old showed good speed and
shrugged off the useful top-weight Fabulous
Eight (Dream Ahead) to win with plenty in
hand – the margin was a length and three
quarters and the time a smart 55.59.
“He has a bright future and hopefully he’ll
be in Group races in time,” Ho said of the 2.4
favourite. “He jumped well and relaxed really
nicely in the race and just kept going.
“He’s still got a lot to learn but it’s been
better each time he’s had a barrier trial – he was
very green and he settled more on the turn in
his last trial.”

Lor was pleased with his debutant who may
be seen in action again before the campaign
wraps up on 15 July, with his win potentially
pushing up into Class 3 for start two.
“He’s got quality but he’s still green and was
laying in through the final stages, so I’d like to
give him one more run before the end of the
season,” Lor said
Purchased from the Haunui Farm draft at
the 2018 NZB Premier Yearling Sale at Karaka
for NZ$300,000, Winning Dreamer was knocked
down to Tartan Meadow Bloodstock on behalf
of Peter So; the now-gelding races in the name
of So’s daughter Linda
Winning Dreamer was the fourth winner for
Newgate Farm stallion Deep Field (Northern
Meteor) in Hong Kong, quite an effort for the
second season Australian sire given the difficulty
for two- and three-year-olds in the Hong Kong
system. He joins Californiadeepshot, All In
Mind and True Legend as a Hong Kong winner
for Deep Field.
Zac Purton was three wins ahead of Joao
Moreira when the championship protagonists
mounted for the first race and was four in front
at the end of the 11-race programme after he
picked up one win, while the Brazilian drew a
blank.
Purton’s win came when the Dennis Yip-
trained Racing Fighter (Mastercraftsman) took
the Class 3 Eagle’s Nest Handicap (1200m) by
a short-head from the Moreira-ridden Unique
Treasure (Exceed And Excel). That took trainer
and jockey to 14 wins in tandem this term at a
strike-rate of 34 per cent.
Yip collected his third double of the season
and first since December when Hinyuen Swiftness
(Duke Of Marmalade) followed Racing Fighter to
the winner’s arch. The top-weight needed every
ounce of Alfred Chan’s seven-pound claim to
hold off the Purton-ridden Bright Kid (Show A
Heart) by a short-head.
Chan nailed his third double of the
campaign when making all on the John Moore-
trained Beauty Amigo (Kodiac) in the Class 3
Eagle’s Nest Handicap (1200m).
Michael Chang gained his 16th victory, the
Hong Kong Jockey Club’s required total, when
Bullish Glory (Roderic O’Connor) took the
Class 4 Tate’s Cairn Handicap (2000m) under
Karis Teetan. The hooded seven-year-old, a
Group 2 winner and fourth in the Italian Derby
(Gr 2, 2200m) in a former life, boxed on to score
by half a length from the Purton-ridden Good
Days (Artie Schiller).
Superb Daddy (Tavistock) moved trainer
Peter Ho to 14 wins for the season with success
under Neil Callan in the Class 4 Sha Tin Pass
Handicap (1400m).
Teetan also bagged two wins, his second
coming aboard the Benno Yung-trained Marvel
Dragon (Redoute’s Choice) in the Class 3 Hung
Mui Kuk Handicap (1400m).
The afternoon started with a pair of Class
5 contests, sections one and two of the Tsz Wan
Shan Handicap (1400m): Soccer Master (Iffraaj)
made it two wins on the bounce when taking the
opener for jockey Matthew Poon and trainer Chris
So – successful also with Mr Croissant – while the
Richard Gibson-trained Kwaichung Brothers
(Racer’s Edge) crept up the rail to nick the second
section under Vagner Borges.
