Ivan once
held
a prestigious job
as
a n ^ a i r c r a f t engineer, but
was
removed rom

job because of i s C h r i s t i a n f a i t h . For

were part of

underground
church, which
met

secret
n the woods, r i n t
ed

Christian
l i t e r a t u r e ,

risked
much.

prison
ministry.
Genia AnatoUvich Fedayev
s married and

a
son and daughter. Genia was n a l c o h o l i c

he
became
a hristian. He

e f f e c t i v e preacher, and s

evangelism. His prayer group began
paying

he could

They
took the ideas
and
materials

them and ailored them to i t their children.
"Last year my mpression

the Ukraine was

s p i r i t u a l depression. Everyone had

sad look on i s f a c e ; they seemed
esigned
to a
hard
way f i f e that would
never
change. Many
faces
looked the
same

those

he Kherson project began,
ohn
Chesnut was

congregation
in
Pickerington,
Ohio,
a

urb ofColumbus.He

his wife Ruth had
served

1986

several
eastern European countries, so
Ukraine seemed

a n excellent place for
missions
work or h e i r new
hurch.
Now hree
years old an d having reached

n attendance, the Pickerington church
i s
strongly
a c t i v e in i t s community as well
as missions.
Their missions budget
s

general budget, with over
h a l f
going to
the
Kherson project.
Four
people
from Pickerington went
on
the
i
r s t short-term missions
r i p
to
Kherson in 1991,and
three
went n 1993:

When
hey went
h i s y e a r , the t r a v e l e r s had a o t of x t r a
luggage. With the help of Gayle Healin an d others,
o c a l

tors an d
pharmacies
donated 20,000 worth of n t i b i o t i c s
and
over-the-countermedicines
for them
to take to
Kherson.
(Kherson
hospitals
have almost nothing
i n
the way f drugs
and
medical supplies that we o ul d consider
commonplace
in the U.S.) There
they were
d i s t r i b u t e d
by
h r i s t i a n
doctors
a t
a Khe rson h o s p i t a l .
In
a d d i t i o n , Jo
P o r t z l i n e
and
A l t h e a
Joy,
teachers at o c a l
elementary
schools,
organized the
children
in
donating
money,
chool
supplies,
a n d
seeds.
The
ickerington church plans to do t again t h i s Novem
ber,
onlyon
a r g e r s c a l e . The t a t e Department,
through
the
Fund or
Democracy
a n d
Development, i l l ship (for
free) a o r t y - f o o t container of food an d medical supp lies to
any i t y in the former Soviet Union. The ickerington church

Besides
going to o c a l
businesses an d n d i v i d u a l s , they are
looking
for other

emphasis on ommunity involvement ha s

church sends
a newsletter
