Key Stage 3 Geography

Geography forms part of our core curriculum offer and is designed to give our students a greater appreciation of the world that surrounds us.  In Year 7, students follow a course that includes Planet Earth; My Place; Africa; Glaciation; Population and Urbanisation; Asia (including China and India). In Year 7, students can take part in the Culture visit to Castleton.

In Year 8, students build upon the foundations laid in Year 7 and cover a range of topics, including Weather and Climate; Development; Russia; Economic Activity; Middle East; Rocks, Weathering and Soils; Geographical Information Systems.

Geography is optional in Year 9, students choose either Geography or History to follow to GCSE level.

Key Stage 4 Geography

Students that choose to follow Geography at Key Stage 4 make this choice in Year 8. Year 9 therefore prepares the ground for the GCSE course, with students studying the topics that form the core of the GCSE course:• Tectonic Landscapes• Coastal Landscapes• River Landscapes• Challenges for the Planet• Geographical Skills• A Wasteful World• Population Change• Economic Change• Settlement Change• A Tourist’s World• Geographical Investigation

Key Stage 4 Geography

Students follow the Pearson Edexcel GCSE Geography Specification A course and we provide the opportunity to buy the best revision guide through the school. After-school revision sessions for Year 11 are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays as part of our Year 11 Study Programme. The Pearson Edexcel website contains resources such as past papers and mark schemes and can be accessed here: GCSE Geography

Key Stage 3 History

Students studying History encounter a variety of topics within lessons which are taught in a variety of ways. Students investigate the changes in Britain from 1066 to the twentieth century; how key events like the Holocaust shaped our world; why the Romans are still important today and why WW1 is still so significant even 100 years later. In Year 7, students consider the History of Salford, The Roman Empire and Medieval England.In Year 8, students will study the Tudors, Stuart Society, the Industrial Revolution and the Slave Trade.

History is an optional subject in Year 9.Culture

Key Stage 4 History

Students that choose to follow History at Key Stage 4 make this choice in Year 8. Year 9 therefore prepares the ground for the GCSE course, with students studying the topics that form the core of the GCSE course.

In Year 9, students study the First World War, Hitler’s rise to power and the Holocaust.

Key Stage 4 History

Students study the AQA Modern World History Syllabus.

In Year 10, students study the World Peacekeeping 1918 - 1919, Hitler’s Foreign Policy, the Origins of the Cold War and the Roaring 20s in the USA.

In Year 11 students study the Depression and the New Deal, the USA and Vietnam as well as completing their Controlled Assessment Task.

Key Stage 3 Religious Education

Religious Education forms part of our core curriculum offer and is designed to give our students a greater appreciation of the different cultures that make up our community.  In Year 7, students follow a course that includes Identity & Difference and Islam.

In Year 8, students build upon the foundations laid in Year 7 and cover a range of topics, including Dangerous R.E. and Does the world need to be saved?

In Year 9, students develop an understanding of the Holocaust & Jewish Beliefs as well as the Behaviours & Beliefs within Hinduism and Buddhism.

Students can choose Philosophy and Ethics at Key Stage 4. The OCR GCSE course allows students to think about their wider context and the cultures that surround them.

In Year 10, students study the Philosophy elements of the course:• Beliefs About Deity• Religious Experience• Good & Evil• Reason & Revelation• End of Life.
