Ellesmere College Post 16 Home Learning Update – w/c 1 st June 2020 Hello everyone, Welcome back to the final half term of this year. It has been the strangest term of my 35 years in education (including my own schooling). I imagine we will have some more changes in our lives as restrictions are lifted. But remember we coped with previous changes and so we can deal with these especially as these are for positive reasons. If you are struggling, then speak to someone at home or your tutor when they call or Childline 0800 1111 (Up to age 19) English In English this week, we would like you to: Look at improving your writing style. Maths In Maths this week, we would like you to: Work on your multiplication skills. Other learning Independence: You’re looking at how we use different kitchen equipment and then there’s a recipe for you to try out. PSHE: This week you will practise your money skills which will be useful when more shops start to open. Physical Development: This week you will be working on your running skills. There’s also some work on independent travel skills, looking at road signs. Don’t forget every day at 9am Joe Wicks is broadcasting his very own workout called ‘PE with Joe’ https://www.youtube.com/user/thebodycoach1 We would love to see pictures of the work and activities you’ve done! Please email them to [email protected]

What is money? This week we are starting our new topic of money. TASK 1: If you have internet access, watch this video – a little boy called Dougie is looking at coins and is working out how much the coins are worth, by look and feel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnrHLsHOVgM There was one coin that was missing from the video – what was it? Can you describe what it looks like and what it is worth? Can you try and do this at home – can you work out what coin is what – can you test your parents or siblings? Can you do the blindfold challenge? TASK 2: Using either coins at home or the pictures of coins on the next page, see if you can put them in order from smallest value to largest. Then see if you can make these amounts using different coins. You can use coins twice if you need to:

Amount Coins used Other coins I could use

56p

£1.25

Task 3: Let’s think about how people get money and why they need it. Read the slides below, then jot down your ideas:

Task 4: We’re going to look at how people get money in a little more detail now. Read the first slide and then do the activity on the second slide:

Athletics – Running/Agility Equipment: 10 household items (make sure they are safe to move) & timer (clock, stopwatch, wrist watch etc) Instructions:

Warm up – Try and spell your name by doing a stretch for each letter of your name Here is Mo Farah on the left – he has created the letter M – with his arms. Can you use different body parts to spell all of your name? Extension – try your surname if you’re not quite warmed

up enough – (10mins total)

Main Activity – Collect 10 household items (e.g. 1. toilet roll, 2.football, 3.sponge etc). Anything really that is safe to move from one area to another.

With your items create different shapes – you may not need all of your items to create your shape. Place them on the floor (outside if you have a garden or somewhere indoors where you have space) so there is enough space so you can run in-between them

e.g. an oblong Item 1 Item 2 Item 3 e.g. a triangle Item 1 Item 4 Item 5 Item 6 Item 2 Item 3 Item 7 Item 8 Item 9 Item 4 Item 5 Item 6

Task – Every time you create a shape you are going to run and touch every item as quick as you can – you must touch them with your hand. Have a starting point (start timer) to run from and to (stop timer). Then record your times for each shape. Which shape did you do the quickest agility run? Record them on a piece of paper.

E.g. Oblong run = ….. minutes Triangle run = …. Minutes (20-25mins) Extension – Can you create different shapes to the examples I have given above and record your agility run times for those – try and make another 3 shapes at least. Or you may create numbers instead??

Cool Down – Collect in all of your items (walking). Can you collect them back in, in alphabetical order Remember to stretch probably and once you finish your lesson take a photo of yourself doing your best Mobot pose (above) or Usain bolt pose.
