The debut Toronto designer Sarah Stevenson pre- sented her first collection at the spring/summer 2011 LG Fashion Week in Toronto. The look She turned to the lush foliage at Toronto’s Allan Gardens to inspire her custom textiles. Working from hun- dreds of photographs of flowers and greenery, she drew and painted the designs before digitally trans- forming them. “The ini- tial process of sketching is done by hand using various forms of media,” she says. “Then it takes me weeks to fine-tune the design and put it into repeat.” The result? Silk- satin and silk-chiffon prints like Kaleidoscope (top) and Appleblossoms (bottom) that Stevenson fashions into flirty tra- peze blouses, eccentric column gowns and draped cocktail dresses. Up next For fall/winter 2011, expect a palette of deep purples and rich blues prompted by a re- cent trip to Lugano, Switzerland, where Stevenson spent time near the city’s glacier-fed lake of the same name. “I always seem to come back to nature,” she says. For starters, a grow- ing number of the hit TV show’s female stars are wearing her designs on the red carpet. Most recently, Heather Morris (Brittany) wore a frothy blush-coloured floor-grazer to the 2011 Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Jayma Mays (Emma), Naya Rivera (Santana) and Lea Michele (Rachel) have also donned her gowns in the last year. And it’s not just Glee gals who are taking notice: Stars like Christina Hendricks and Julia Stiles are also choosing Romona Keveža. “It’s like that old story that it takes you 10 years to become an overnight sensation,” says Keveža, laughing. The New York-based Canadian designer—best known for her bridal line—finds her inspiration in the classic style of screen sirens like Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. “I strive to give women a sense of timeless beauty that is also ‘of the moment,’” she says.
