PhD and 15 Msc research projects and currently supervising 6 PhD and 10 Msc

projects. His core areas of competence include; Breeding crops for drought

tolerance using DNA molecular markers (RFLPs, Microsatellites, AFLP, SSRs), QTL

analysis, Molecular mapping, DNA Sequencing, fragment analysis and Genotyping.

He has worked with Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) as a plant breeder

of grain legumes and underutilized crops for 14 years and together with a team

developed 14 varieties of common bean, cowpea, pigeonpea, mungbean, Dolichos

lablab that are currently under commercial cultivation in semi-arid areas of Kenya.

He also worked for KARI as a biotechnologist for 6 years, developing maize tolerant

to drought and resistant to insects and built a state of the art molecular genetics

laboratory at KARI, Katumani. Currently Dr Ngugi has been Principal Investigator to

4 regional and several national projects.
