Want to arrive at your wedding destination feeling alert and

well-rested? Here are fi ve simple steps to fi ghting jet lag.

Exercise. Physical activity can help reset your body’s circadian

rhythms, so be sure to get a workout and some fresh air before

the fl ight. Stretch and exercise lightly onboard and, when you

land, go for a walk or jog, preferably in the bright sunlight (to help

reset your clock). Or head out early evening to boost your ability

to fall asleep and get back on track.

Snooze. Catch some shuteye on the plane, and plan your travel

so that you arrive close to your normal bedtime. Flying at night

usually worsens jetlag.

Hydrate. Getting enough fl uids (non-alcoholic) is the ticket to

maintaining your energy level and avoding headaches.

Eat. Keeping a consistent meal schedule can help you adjust

to the new time zone, suggests a study by British Airways. Bring

healthy snacks for the fl ight and layovers, and eat at your normal

meal time when you arrive at your destination.

Supplement. Getting some nutritional support from nature

can help balance your system, too. Think melatonin and serotonin,

D is for Dress Make sure your

dress suits your locale. A gorgeous

ball gown might be perfect at a Scottish

castle, but you’ll be miserable if you wear

it in the tropics.

E is for Early Try to arrive a few

days early. This gives you time to

fi x any hitches, get over your jet lag and,

most importantly, relax.

F is for Flowers Unless specifi c

fl owers rank high on your priority list,

rely on local fl ora. Flying in fl owers can be

tricky—and expensive—in remote locales.

G is for Gratitude Show guests

easier to narrow the choices to a few

key decisions.

C is for Coordinator Look for

a hotel with an in-house coordina-

tor. You won’t have to hire a wedding

planner, and you won’t have to do

everything yourself.



K is for Kids You’ll have to make

special arrangements for children

to attend your wedding if it’s an adults-

only resort. If the families stay at a property

nearby, include them in everything or join

in special activities just for them.

L is for Leverage Group travel

gives you leverage with airlines

and hotels. Be ready to propose discounts,

upgrades or freebies to sweeten the deal.

M is for Music Hire local musicians

for the cocktail hour, but switch

to a DJ or iPod for dancing. With a

band, you may not know what you

are getting.

N is for Nonstop Maximize

the number of guests who

say “yes” to the invitation by choosing

a destination most can reach by

nonstop flight. The cheaper and

5 THINGS TO WATCH FOR

1. AGE LIMITS Some all-inclusives cater to adults only. If you’re planning a multi-

generational event, ask about age limits throughout the property, from rooms

to restaurants to activities.

2. DAY PASSES Guests staying at another resort may need to purchase a day pass to

attend your wedding and reception. If offsite guests forget to pay, you may be billed.

3. VENDOR RESTRICTIONS In some countries, anyone you bring in to provide a

service at a wedding (your own hair stylist or photographer, for instance) needs

an offi cial work permit.

4. PRIVACY Unless your all-inclusive limits weddings to one a day, you may be sharing

the spotlight with one or more couples. Some people like this; others, not so much.

look and feel your absolute best,” she says. “And if your skin doesn’t look good, you don’t

feel good.” So how do you lay the foundation for a gorgeous big-day glow? Take cue

ROYAL TREATMENT

Want to know how Hollywood’s leading

ladies look so fabulous walking down the

red carpet? It’s called the Skin Maestro.

This one-of-a-kind machine from Europe

makes your skin look tight, plumped and

DO get on a serious routine of monthly facials at least six months

before your event and stay consistent with a daily home-care

routine of exfoliation and hydration to ensure clear skin.

DON’T skimp on your skincare budget. Set aside between $1,000

and $3,000. It’s worth the results.

DO drink 4 to 8 cups of water a day. Flavor it with fresh cucumber

to tempt your taste buds, or better yet, eat the cucumber itself. At

96 percent water and packed with nutritious minerals, it will give

your skin a boost from the inside out.

DON’T switch products. It can upset your skin and undo the

progress you have made.

DO exfoliate, cleanse and moisturize your skin every night

before bed.

DON’T stress. It weighs on your skin. Try yoga, meditation, massage—anything that lowers cortisol levels.

DO grind up or muddle a cucumber and apply it as a mask. Rich

in vitamin C and caffeic acid, it soothes skin and eases puffi ness.

DON’T forget to wear sunscreen every day. It will protect your skin

DO use serums. They penetrate deep into your skin, providing

hydration and nutrients. Use hydrating gel masks to your keep

DON’T do a cleanse or detox within six months of your wedding

day. It can make you break out.

DO the facials and prep your skin in your hometown, not at the

wedding destination. Remember, the therapist doesn’t know your

complexion. Get your last treatment before you go, and take

products with you.

DON’T try anything new, like waxing your face close to your

wedding day. You can tear your skin or cause a breakout.

DO wash your face the night before, using your creams as usual.

The day of the event, wash your face with only water, then towel

dry, put on your serums, moisturizer and sunscreen.

DON’T hire a makeup (or hair) person without a trial fi rst. Some-

times it takes a few practice runs to get it right where you like it.

DO Use a primer before adding makeup to ensure a fl awless

fi nish. Avoid creases on your eyelids by applying powder prior

to putting on eyeliner or eye shadow.

says Beverly Hills–based dermatologist Dr. Vicki Rapaport. “Photofacials soften the

age spots and sun damage seen even in young brides-to-be and make the skin evenly

toned and glowing for the big day. They should really be called ‘photomiracles.’” What else

What is a photofacial?

In basic terms, it’s a type of safe, light-based laser treatment that

removes spots and tiny red vessels on the face, chest, arms and

hands to help rejuvenate and expose a newer, fresher complexion.

The technologies available are LED (light emitting diode) and IPL

(intense-pulsed light), which is usually the most effective.

What skin problems can it treat?

It can lift off brown sun spots, called lentigoes, zap tiny broken

capillaries and help exfoliate the skin’s extreme top layer. Some

photofacials also treat skin problems like acne and rosacea.

How is a photofacial different from a regular facial?

You can’t compare the effects. Basic facials extract blackheads

and whiteheads and clean the skin, while peels and microderm-

abrasion help exfoliate. But they can’t eliminate sun damage, like

broken vessels and brown spots.

What about wrinkles?

Photofacials do nothing for fi ne lines and wrinkles but

they even out the skin tone and can soften the look of

large pores.

How soon before my wedding should I have a photofacial?

Schedule it six to nine months before the big day to ensure you’re

fully healed and have a chance to do a touch-up,

if needed.

What’s the downtime?

You’ll look slightly freckled for 7-10 days afterward, with

tiny specks of brown fl aking off for about fi ve to seven days. You

can wash your face and put makeup on pretty much right away.

How long do the results last?

If you’re diligent with sunscreen and wear a hat in the sun, fi ve to

10 years. If not, you’ll be back at the dermatologist’s within a year.

Are there any negative side effects?

With fair-skinned patients, there’s really no risk. Darker skinned

individuals, however, have to be careful with any type of laser as

there’s a higher risk of being burned or having darker or lighter

spots remain. Ask your doctor to do a test spot fi rst.

How much does a photofacial cost?

Paying $300-$400 (and $200-$300 for a touchup) is reasonable.

Any insider’s tips?

Find a board certifi ed dermatologist who’s a member of the

American Academy of Dermatology (aad.org). Check the person’s

credentials and ask questions. And know that while it may sound

scary to laser your face, a photofacial is a gentle and worthwhile

procedure that can give you that new beginning—particularly for

your once-in-a-lifetime wedding day.
