We are celebrating the end of the year holidays, All Saints Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas; this issue will give some recaps.

We have celebrated life and home goings; but God is gracious to have given us an opportunity to continue to live and give thanks for His wondrous deeds. Thank you Lord!

On Veteran’s Day we honor Soldiers who protect our nation. For their service as our warriors, They deserve

our admiration.

Some were drafted; Some were volunteers; For some it was just

yesterday; For some it’s been many years; In the jungle or desert,

On land or on the sea, They did whatever was assigned To produce a victory.

Some came back; some didn’t They defended us everywhere.

Some saw combat; some rode a desk; All of them did their share.

No matter what the duty, For low pay and little glory, These soldiers gave up normal lives, For duties mundane and gory, Let every veteran be honored;

Don’t let politics get in the way.

Thanksgiving Day:

Thanksgiving Day has been an annual holiday in the United States since 1863. Not everyone sees Thanksgiving Day as a cause for celebration. Each year since 1970, a group of Native Americans and their supporters have staged a protest for a National Day of Mourning at Plymouth Rock in Plymouth, Massachusetts on Thanksgiving Day. American Indian Heritage Day is also observed at this time of the year.

There are claims that the first Thanksgiving Day was held in the city of El Paso, Texas in 1598. Another early event was held in 1619 in the Virginia Colony. Many people trace the origins of the modern Thanksgiving Day to the harvest celebration that the Pilgrims held in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1621.

However, their first true thanksgiving was in 1623, when they gave thanks for rain that ended a drought. These early thanksgivings took the form of a special church service, rather than a feast. In the second half of the 1600s, thanksgivings after the harvest became more common and started to become annual events. However, it was celebrated on different days in different communities and in some places there were more than one thanksgiving each year.

George Washington, the first president of the United States, proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving Day in 1789.

According to some sources, the idea for All Saints' Day goes back to the fourth century when the Greek Christians kept a festival on the first Sunday after Pentecost (in late May or early June) in honor of all martyrs and saints. Other sources say that a commemoration of “All Martyrs” began to be celebrated as early as 270 [A.D.] but no specific month or date is recorded. Pope Gregory IV made All Saints' Day an authorized holiday in 837 [ A.D.]. It is speculated that the chosen date for the event, November 1, may have been an attempt to supplant the pagan Festival of the Dead (also known as Samhain or the feast of Saman, lord of death). All Saints' Day, which is celebrated globally, is closely tied with All Souls ’ Day, which was first instituted at the monastery in Cluny in 993 [A.D.] and quickly spread among Christians. All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day are also closely linked with Halloween, which is a shortened for the name “All Hallows' Even”

Editor’s Note: [A.D.] is an abbreviation for the Latin "Anno Domini", which translates to "the Year of Our Lord," referring to years after the birth of Jesus Christ. [C.E.] is used by some scholars instead, which means

"the Common Era."

greatest gifts that God can give any church congregation, Bishop Oliver J. Haney, Jr. and First Lady Laverne Haney. For 22 years at his church they have diligently and faithfully served the Lord and His people. For us they have created an unforget-table legacy. By preaching and teaching God’s word, their legacy of laboring with sincere compassion for lost souls, had caused our lives to be changed completely. They are counted worthy of receiving double honor, a more abundant provision, for demonstrating the power of holy living.

Bishop Oliver J. Haney, former Interim President of the Inter--denominational Theological Seminary (ITTC) has been faithful in his calling as pastor. In previous years he has served as pastor of four churches from 1965 to the present. He was pastor of two Presbyterian churches Antioch in Dalton, Georgia and Ebenezer in Rome, Georgia; and two church of God in Christ congregations, Fairburn Church of God in Christ in Fairburn, Georgia and New Horizons Church of God in Christ in East Point, Georgia.

Bishop Haney has traveled the world extensively, spreading the Word of God, often as a revivalist, conference speaker, and workshop leader. faithfully served the Church of God in Christ in numerous capacities. She has worked as the secretary of ITC in the pastoral Care Office. President of the Ministers and Deacon Wives, President of Sister in Touch Ministries, and currently serve as the Director of Congregational Life and pastoral Care here at New Horizons Church of God in Christ.

The Scary Storm

A little girl walked daily to and from school. Though the weather that morning was questionable and clouds were forming, she made her daily trip to school.

As the afternoon progressed, the winds whipped up, along with thunder and lightning. The mother of the little girl felt concerned that her daughter would be frightened as she walked home from school, and she herself feared that the electrical storm might harm her child. Following the roar of thunder, lightning, like a flaming sword would cut through the sky.

Full of concern, the mother quickly got in her car and drove along the route to her child's school. As she did so, she saw her little girl walking along, but at each flash of lightning, the child would stop, look up and smile. Another and another were to follow quickly, each with the little girl stopping, looking up and smiling.

Finally, the mother called over to her child and asked, "What are you doing?" The child answered, "Smiling, God just keeps taking pictures of me."

Born July 28, 1924 in Booneville, Missouri, Vivian

moved with his family to Macomb, Illinois when he

was six years old. After graduating from Macomb

High School in 1942, he enrolled at Western Illinois

University earning a bachelor's degree in history.

While working as a community recreation director in

Peoria, Illinois, Vivian participated in a successful

lunch counter sit-in in 1947. In 1959, Vivian moved to

Nashville, Tennessee, to study for the ministry at

American Baptist College where he became acquainted

with James Lawson and the nonviolent direct action

strategies of the Nashville Student Movement.

In early 1960, Vivian joined Diane Nash, James

Forman, John Lewis and other students from

local universities as they staged sit-ins and other

nonviolent protests throughout the city. In 1961,

Vivian was among the ten Nashville students who

replaced injured Freedom Ride participants. In 1963,

King invited Vivian to join the executive staff of the

SCLC as the director of affiliates. In this capacity,

Vivian coordinated the activities of local civil rights

groups nationwide. He also advised King and

organized demonstrations during campaigns in

Birmingham, St. Augustine and Selma. In 1966, Vivian

left the SCLC and moved to Chicago to direct the

Urban Training Center for Christian Mission and the

Coalition for United Community Action. He later

founded the Black Strategies and Information Center,

the National Center for Human Rights Education and

the Center for Democratic Renewal, formerly the

National Anti-Klan Network. From:

World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” -

officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed

on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the

town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased

seven months earlier when an armistice or temporary

cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and

Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the

eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason,

November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of

“the war to end all wars.”

photo was taken at 10:58 a.m., on November 11, 1918,

two minutes before the armistice ending World War I

went into effect. In November 1919, President Wilson

proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of

Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in

America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled

with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in

the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory,

both because of the thing from which it has freed us and

because of the opportunity it has given America to show

her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of

the nations…"

Nelson Mandela – 1918-2013

Mandela was born on July 18, 1918. His father died when he was 12 and he became a ward of the Thembu Regent [tribe].

At primary school in Qunu his teacher Miss Mdingane gave him the name Nelson, in accordance with the custom to give all school children “Christian” names.

Nelson Mandela – Cont’d In 1958 he married a social worker Winnie Madikizela and they had two daughters. The couple divorced in 1996. In October 1963 he joined ten others on trial for sabotage in what became known as the Rivonia Trial. Facing the death penalty his words to the court at the end of his famous ‘Speech from the Dock’ on 20 April 1964 became immortalized:

“I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

On 11 June 1964 he and seven others were convicted and the next day were sentenced to life imprisonment. His mother died in 1968 and his eldest son Thembi in 1969.

In 1993 he and President FW de Klerk jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize and on 27 April 1994 he voted for the first time in his life.

On 10 May 1994 he was inaugurated South Africa’s first democratically elected President. On his 80th birthday in 1998 he married Graça Machel, his third wife. He stepped down in 1999 after one term as President. He died at his home in Johannesburg on 5 December 2013. He was 95.
