Mr. Jeff Johnstone, Principal Ms. Teresa Beck, Vice Principal Ms. Annie Varghese, Vice Principal Principal’s Message What happened to Spring? With the hot weather, it seems like we have jumped to mid June! I am always amazed at how fast the school year goes by. At the time of writing this message, we have six and a half weeks left of school. Spring is an exciting time for many reasons. Many grads are being accepted to post secondary institutions and they are getting ready for the various Grad events. Behind the scenes, we are preparing our timetable to create the student schedules for next year. To add to the fun, we have many special events coming up … STUCO Summerfest , Play4Purpose, Elgin’s Guitar Night and many more. All the different events can be found on our Website as well as the Orca News App and the newsletter. Elgin Park teaching staff have reviewed and finalized the bell schedule for next year. A teacher committee was formed to research and propose different options that would best suit student learning. Elgin Park has unanimously approved a “Flex Time” Schedule. Flex Time is instructional time between first and second period. The time is allocated by shortening classes by ten minutes. First period teachers can use the time in many ways, such as extended lessons, labs, and field trips. Flex time can also be used for students to catch up on missed work and receive extra help. Assemblies for Health & Career Education will be planned during this time to ease the disruptions during class time. Many neighbouring districts have adopted flex time with great success and Elgin Park is the second Surrey school to adopt this new practice. Please see the chart below showing next year’s bell schedule. Elgin Park Secondary Schedule 2018/19 Early Dismissal Wednesday, Rotating Wednesday A few reminders: Last day of classes is June 22. Graduation Assessments

Graduation assessments are changing to align with the new curriculum. As part of the updated graduation requirements, students currently in grades 10 and 11 will be required to complete a Numeracy Assessment before graduation. For more information about the assessment, please refer to the following link https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/provincial-assessment/graduation.

This assessment is not tied to a particular course students take at Elgin. Each student will have up to three opportunities to write the assessment. Students will receive a score on a scale of 1 to 4. A minimum of 1 is required to complete graduation requirements. All current grade 11 students will be have the opportunity to write the Graduation Numeracy Assessment in June. This is an electronic exam; therefore, students will be scheduled into a session in the computer lab. We will hold two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon on Tuesday, June 26th. We will inform students which session they must attend closer to the date of the exam. Students will have three hours to complete the exam.

2nd Annual Awards BBQ Elgin will be celebrating its finest on Tuesday, June 12th in the second annual awards BBQ starting at 3pm in the cafeteria. This year we will be honouring our finest students in academics, athletics, service, citizenship, and more. Those receiving an award will be treated to a delectable feast from M&M Meats as well as cake, pop, and even a photo screen for keepsake photos with favourite teachers and administrators. This event is fast becoming a favourite tradition as it recognizes all the amazing, talented, and dedicated students of Elgin Park Secondary.

Elgin’s 2nd Annual PLAY4PURPOSE is happening June 6th and this year promises to be another great event. This year, WE>ME is our theme. PLAY4PURPOSE is a get outside and play initiative: a sport’s day for high school students. The event will run rain or shine and only students who pre-register are able to participate. Registration opens Monday, May 14. Price per player is $10 and is first come first serve. All proceeds from the event will go to-wards Orca families in need of respite, the WR Food bank and a PLAY4PURPOSE scholarship. Starting in the morning of Wed, June 6, from 8:45-10:45, the Gr 10, 11 and 12’s, students will play in the activity they signed up for: ultimate Frisbee/soccer, badminton, basketball, bocce/croquet or football. The afternoon will see the Grade 8’s and 9’s playing the same activities. Registration opens Monday, May 14. Price per player is $10 and is first come first serve for sign up. A BBQ lunch (for $5) run by the PE staff will be available for all students and staff. The lunch includes hotdogs, chips and a drink.
