The Elements and Principles of Art DesignWhat Are They?Elements of design are the parts.They structure and carry the work.

Principles of design are concepts.They affect content and message.Elements of DesignLineShapeDirectionSizeTextureFormSpaceColorValueLineStrokes that show motion and connect two points. May be vertical, horizontal or diagonal, curved, straight, zigzag, or show emotion.Point or mark that is dragged across a surface.

4FormShows an object in space, the mass or positive space it occupies. The term usually used when describing 3-D objects.Something you learned to create this year during the Stack Ups project and the one point perspective drawing.

5Space-What is between objects, also known as negative space.-An element that is concerned with height and width, and that encloses space.

TextureThe feel, real or implied, on an object or its surface.

7ShapeArea enclosed when both sides of a line meet. Shapes can be geometric or organic.

8ColorHue. May be complimentary, analogous, primary, secondary, tertiary, or part of a color wheel.Element of art is concerned with reflected light

9ValueThe lightness of darkness of an object or color. Often used with drawings.

13UnityThe feeling of wholeness or the parts belonging together.is a principle of art that makes all the elements and/or parts of an artwork feel unified, as if all the parts go together. It also gives an artwork a sense of feeling complete and/or finished.

14RhythmThe repetition of lines, shapes, or colors to create a feeling of movement.A principle of art that uses repetition to show visual motion.

15ContrastA difference created when elements are placed next to each other in a work of art.principle that deals with extreme differences between two things, sometimes even different elements.

16VarietyThe use of different lines, shapes, and colors in a piece of work.
