Why Study Elementary Education?The Lees-McRae Elementary Education program provides candidates with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to be outstanding teachers. The program also provides a course of study that promotes a positive and holistic understanding of the teaching profession within a reflective practitioner framework.

Accreditation: The Elementary Education program at Lees-McRae College has achieved the high standards required to maintain accreditation by The Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). Building on the Lees-McRae liberal arts core curriculum, the program curriculum has a balance of philosophy, theory and practice for effective teacher preparation.

Exceptional Children: The Elementary Education Program at Lees-McRae College includes a course to give candidates strategies to deal with the diverse learners they will encounter in the classroom.

Our Commitment to YouThe faculty and staff of Elementary Education are committed to develop teachers as professionals who can counsel wisely, demonstrate reflective teaching, impart knowledge, and recognize the importance of educating the whole teacher who will interact ethically and humanely with others in the workplace and community.

Among the distinctions of Lees-McRae’s Elementary Education program, the Reflective Framework is perhaps the greatest. Simply put, it’s a process that encourages students to reflect on every aspect of the learning and teaching experience.

NC FALCONLees-McRae’s Elementary Education program is one of four in the state of North Carolina chosen to participate in NC FALCON, North Carolina’s Formative Assessment Learning Community’s Online Network. This program supports the implementation of formative assessment in North Carolina classrooms and professional learning communities where challenges and successes can be shared with expectations of positive collaboration.

Serving as the lead pilot institution to embed this training in their education program, Lees-McRae students not only participate in the professional development series, but are trained in using specific strategies to determine student performance in their classroom, create unit curriculum plans that embed these strategies, and prepare to implement their plans during their student teaching.

Extended Campus ExperiencesThe four-year degree in Elementary Education is designed for students who already have a two-year degree. This full-time program takes two years to complete and results in a BS in Elementary Education. Classes are scheduled in afternoons or evenings two days per week and are taught by highly qualified faculty. Classroom observation, assisting and student teaching takes place in the student’s own community.
