VAPA Digital Inventory 201516 Elementary Division The San Juan UniAied School District places tremendous importance on teaching the whole child through our Visual and Performing Arts programs. Our Music and Visual Art Specialists provide enrichment experiences and curriculumintegrated lessons which enhance 21 st Century learning competencies and focus on student voice. In addition, we offer vocal and instrumental ensembles, theater, guitar, percussion, piano, dance, and jazz band. The grid below shows each school, which programs are offered, and the number of instructional hours/week. The Arts Quotient (AQ) is calculated using the number of hours of arts instruction with respect to student population. A higher AQ indicates more artful learning, creative opportunities, and handson experiences for students. A detailed explanation and colorcoded scale are on subsequent pages.

  • VAPA  Digital  Inventory  2015-‐16  Elementary  Division

The  San  Juan  UniAied  School  District  places  tremendous  importance  on  teaching  the  whole  child  through  our  Visual  and  Performing  Arts  programs.  Our  Music  and  Visual  Art  Specialists  provide  enrichment  experiences      and  curriculum-‐integrated  lessons  which  enhance  21st  Century  learning  competencies  and  focus  on  student  voice. A  higher  AQ  indicates  more  artful  learning,  creative  opportunities,  and  hands-‐on    experiences  for  students.  A  detailed  explanation  and  color-‐coded  scale  are  on  subsequent  pages.

  • The Arts Quotient calculation* is based on the number of hours of arts instruction per average size classroom per week.

*First divide the school population by 32 then divide that number into the number of Arts hours. For example, Dewey has 554

students divided by 32 = 17.31 classrooms. That’s the denominator in the equation. Now divide the 52 Arts hours by 17.31 and

you get 3.00 (300) - the number of Arts hours/classroom/week assuming the time is equally spread across the school. This basically gives a measurable and comparable number that represents Arts experiences available per week with respect to school population. The equation is below. There are a number of ways that a school can improve its AQ. Try for a balance among all disciplines; music, art, dance and drama are all available.

Elementary  Highlights:  This  year,  more  choirs  were  added  for  a  30%  increase.  Arts  Integration  programs  have  more  than  tripled.  Percussion  classes  have  doubled  with  the  help  of  LCAP*  money

    *  LCAP  funds  have  made  it  possible  for  12  schools  to  have  more  VAPA  experiences.  Schools  were  chosen  based  on  their  number  of  tar-‐get  students  and  their  VAPA  status.  Programs  range  from  a  Cultural  Music  Percussion  Program  and  Arts  Integration,  to  Choir,  Strings,  and  instrument  repair/replacement.  Schools  are  Carmichael,  Dyer-‐Kelly,  Grand  Oaks,  Greer,  Mariposa,  Charles  Peck,  San  Juan,  Starr  King,  Sylvan,  Whitney,  Northridge,  and  Encina.
