Elektra Women's Choir features a number of outreach programs throughout our season, which include a Choral Leadership Workshop For Young Women, another program called Mira Mentorship Program for High School Singers, a half day Choral Conducting Workshop and a Conductor Mentorship Program. Elektra is proud to offer a motivational choral “retreat” experience for sopranos and altos Grades 8–12 of all skill levels, and their teachers. Vocal instruction, choral skill building, leadership and motivation for singers and professional development for teachers and student teachers. Leaders for 2014 will be Elektra’s Artistic Director Morna Edmundson and Guest Clinician Allison Girvan, with participation of Kelly Proznick and Denise O'Brien, two talented high school music teachers, and members of Elektra. Register as an individual, small group, or entire ensemble! Registration numbers will be limited by venue capacity. Please register early to avoid disappointment.

Student Registrations: Cost per student: $10. No audition necessary. Limited financial assistance with transportation is available to schools. Funding is also available for individual students who need financial assistance at teachers’ discretion.

Teacher and Student Teacher Registrations: Cost for teachers and student teachers: $0. We welcome you to the day, and to a teachers’ lunch. Please pre-register as Elektra will provide your lunch.

GUEST CLINICIAN ALLISON GIRVANAllison Girvan is a professional singer, arranger, director, clinician and adjudicator. Allison lives in Nelson, BC, where she directs three choirs, VoixVive (ages 6-12), córazon vocal ensemble (ages 13-21) and most recently, lalin (ages 18 +). It is her work with corazón which has helped to put Nelson on the radar of the choral world. True to their name, corazón sings from the heart and has in turn won the hearts of many Canadian audiences in the twelve years since it began. This talented and motivated group of young singers have gained a reputation for their blend, intonation and interpretation of world music repertoire. Allison is also the music director for the Capitol Theatre’s youth program in her hometown of Nelson, BC.

MiRA MeNtORsHip pROGRAM FOR HiGH sCHOOL AGed siNGeRs, spRiNG 2014Welcome to Mira, a program for mentoring young women singers who are ready for a challenge. This program has been established by Vancouver’s Elektra Women’s Choir to encourage students to develop their love of choral singing, build their choral skills, and to provide an opportunity for young women to sing with a renowned women’s choir, Elektra. Offered annually, Mira educates future generations of singers and classical music supporters. This year’s program includes several Monday evening rehearsals with Elektra and participation in the choir’s How The Blossoms Are Falling concert on Saturday, May 10th, 2014.

The ideal Mira participant: is one of the top choral students in her school choir has at least two years choral experience possesses strong musical skills has an in-tune voice has an ability and willingness to learn her part on her own or with her teacher loves choral singing

If this program sounds like you, please discuss it with your high school choir teacher and make your application by December 10th, 2013. Preference will be given to singers in Grades 11 and 12. Twelve singers will be chosen from those applying.

FIVE SUREFIRE WAYS TO MAKE YOUR CHOIR SOUND BETTER

FEBRUARY 1ST, 2014 9:30Am – 1:00pmRyerson Uni ted Church, 2195 West 45th Avenue at Yew Street

This enjoyable and informative half-day workshop is for anyone who leads a choir or is considering stepping out from the ranks of the singers or the classroom to lead a choral ensemble. Empower your leadership by understanding where your singers are now and how you can take them to the next level.

With over 25 years of experience working with choirs of all ages, Edmundson is known for the excellence of her choirs and her clear, compassionate leadership style. A member of the faculty of the BC Choral Federation’s Choral Directorship Course, she enjoys sharing her passion for choral singing with others. Learn techniques in these five areas:

KNOW what you want to hear

WARMUPS that encourage free vocalizing

CONDUCTING GESTURES that evoke tone

REPERTOIRE that builds a tangible sound

BUILDING OWNERSHIP of the sound by your choristers

Light snacks provided. Bring a water bottle.

CONdUCtOR MeNtORsHip pROGRAM 2014JANUARY—mARCh 2014Application deadline: December 15th, 2013

Apply to be one of two active conductors in Elektra's biennial Conductor Mentorship Program. Get one-on-one coaching, podium time with Elektra Women's Choir, feedback on your work with your own choir, and access to Elektra rehearsals. Our 8-week program in Vancouver is focused on Elektra Monday evening rehearsals from January 13th through March 3rd, 2014, culminating in a free, public Open House presentation.

To be eligible, you must currently be conducting a school, college, church or community choir.

Cost: $475 plus GST. We would be happy to provide a program overview document to you for a potential funder.

Application process: email your resume and cover letter to the address below by midnight, December 15th, 2013 to [email protected]

Your letter should explain your current experience level and what you hope to get from the program. Please also describe the choir(s) you currently conduct, including the days/times of your regular rehearsals. All applicants will be notified of the results by December 20th.

Not able to participate this year? Email us to be added to the list for advance notice of the next program, slated for 2016.
