PopCycle volunteers, recently recognized for adopting Groves II Park on Tucson’s east side, went above and beyond when they quickly reported a brush fire at their site. The brush happened to be buffelgrass, and after Tucson Fire tackled the flames the group along with TCB quickly set up a buffelgrass removal day to mitigate this threat to the park and neighboring homes. Great job!

Our volunteers can now provide their group’s work reports online (Adopt a Park, Project Leader Resources page): www.tucsoncleanandbeautiful.org

Join TCB in thanking these recently recognized volunteers, who along with more than 270 other groups work tirelessly to keep our community cleaner. More volunteers needed, call (520) 837‐6834!

Trees for Tucson: Order Online!

TUCSON CLEAN & BEAUTIFUL NEWS SPRING 2014

Trees for Tucson is encouraged by the City of Tucson and Tucson Electric Power beginning to partner on a new Utility Tree Replacement Program! For many years, TCB along with city staff and members of the Landscape Advisory Committee have advocated for removal of trees planted directly under power lines that continue to require unsightly and costly trimming by TEP contractors. The practice of trimming, topping and otherwise shaping trees growing near power lines into unnatural shapes in an attempt to prevent powerline damage and electrical outages was less aesthetically pleasing and unhealthy for the now unbalanced trees, and in spite of the utility’s best efforts the trees would quickly regrow toward the power lines. To ensure minimal community impact, the program includes planting at least 2 replacement trees for every one removed 1 removed at nearby locations that won’t interfere with power lines, and selecting appropriate trees. This effort reduces TEP maintenance needs while improving citywide landscape and tree canopy. Do your part: plant the right tree in the right place, so that our urban tree canopy will continue to contribute to the social, environmental and economic and health benefits for all of our community to enjoy!

Buffelgrass is an invasive plant from Africa that has the potential to dramatically alter the Sonoran Desert we know and love. Buffelgrass is also growing in our ur-ban areas, along our streets, alleys, washes and even in yards where it presents a serious fire hazard. We encourage buffelgrass eradication throughout the year but Spring is a wonderful time to remove it. The ground is sometimes damp which makes digging easier and the temperature is perfect for working outside. To learn more about identification and removal visit the Southern Arizona Buffel-grass Coordination Center's website: http://www.buffelgrass.org — and to sched-ule a buffelgrass presentation at your Neighborhood meeting or for help organizing a buffelgrass removal project, contact: Erin Willett, [email protected] or (520) 837-6836.

SPRING 2014 TUCSON CLEAN & BEAUTIFUL NEWS

Beat Back Buffelgrass—Every Day!

TCB will soon be planting more than 30 new trees on the Pantano Wash just north of Golf Links. These are trees that have been purchased by community members, dedicated as a permanent way to honor or remember friends and family. Already more than 130 trees have been planted over the past 1 1/2 years, with a goal of 580 trees to fill the Pantano linear park area from just south of Golf Links Rd. all the way to Kenyon Dr. A dedication ceremony is being planned for mid-May 2014. Prior to that time, volunteers will also be removing invasive buffelgrass and fountaingrass from the park site. Trees are available for $225 each, including the tree and irrigation installation, name inscription on the com-memorative wall, and a certificate. Call (520) 837-6832 or email [email protected] to dedicate a tree.

Y.A.R.D.S (Youth Achieving Resource Development Skills) is a landscape maintenance & job skills training program for at risk youth. The primary goal is to provide education opportunity and structure to develop and reinforce each student’s individual potential to become a productive citizen, while cre-ating a catalyst for reducing recidivism within the Pima County Juvenile Court System. The program has been supported by The Wolslager Foundation and many community partners.

Saturday, April 12, 2014 TCB and its partners will celebrate the 11th graduating class of Y.A.R.D.S. Our students will have completed a nine week landscape maintenance and job skills training. Join us for the students’ graduation ceremony—for more information, final location details and to RSVP, email: [email protected] or call (520) 837-6830.

Emerging Threat: Sahara Mustard Another invasive that continues to spread in our desert community is Sahara Mustard! Long a problem in California deserts where it has re-placed wildflowers, this invasive has been spotted more and more fre-quently right here in Tucson! More importantly, it seems to be spreading even faster than buffelgrass. Thank you to the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum for its invasives plant guide.
