Spurred by the spreading miniaturization trend in electronics, suppliers of jacks and sockets in China are shifting R&D focus to SMD units although DIP versions continue to dominate production. The latter configuration represents more than 60 percent of the total for the line, but this is expected to diminish in coming years. At Dongguan Bsun Electronics Co. Ltd, the output share of SMD types will surge to 70 percent from 50 percent by end-2011. For some makers, the category will even

exceed 80 percent of shipments in the months ahead. Companies attribute the development to increasingly compact mobile phones, MP3/MP4 players and gaming devices, which are fueling demand both locally and abroad. The aggregate requirements of the first two take up over 60 percent of Chinas jack and socket yield. With the boom in these applications, particularly mobile phones, steady growth is assured. Fueling the industry further is the domestic adoption of a unified interface announced by the China Communications Standards Association in late 2009. The guideline, which was approved by the Ministry of Information Industry, mandates the use of the same kind of jack and socket, thereby expanding the

China suppliers are boosting production of USB 3.0 connectors and cable assemblies to take advantage of the trend for faster transmission in storage devices. Also known as SuperSpeed USB, the standard boasts 10 times higher data rate than USB 2.0. This allows seamless management of HD video, music and image files. USB 3.0 devices also consume less power, thanks to their energy-saving feature. More products are being designed to accommodate USB 3.0 capability. In five years, 40 percent of portable media players will be equipped with the specification, while over 1.7 billion

devices adopting the configuration will be shipped in 2014. USB 3.0 flash drives will account for 225 million units, representing a CAGR of 792 percent in 2009-14. In 2010, about 10 million USB 3.0 chips were rolled out, according to In-Stat. Intel and AMD will begin production of chipsets supporting the interface in 2012. With demand expec ted to climb, Shenzhen Sijinxin Electronic Technology Co. Ltd aims to raise the output share of USB 3.0 connectors and cable assemblies to 50 percent this year. It churns out 50,000 units monthly at present. Shenzhen FJY

Electronic Co. Ltd, meanwhile, started offering USB 3.0 connectors in 2009, and is now supplying compliant cable assemblies as well. Material overhead declined in the past months, thus pushing down USB 3.0 cable quotes. Host controller spending slipped to as low as $2 from $7 to $9 in 2008. This reduced cable rates by $0.50 to $1 compared with six months ago. The variant is still three or four times more expensive than USB 2.0 types, but prices are forecast to drop further. Host controller providers such as Fresco Logic and Taiwans ASMedia and Etron are striving to keep the

components cost under $2, the same level that accelerated USB 2.0s penetration of the mainstream. Mainland China enterprises are offering standard, Mini or Micro, A or B, female and male USB 3.0 cables. Most companies source the connectors from foreign-owned suppliers or overseas partners on request. More makers, however, are starting to produce inputs in-house. Manufac turers are likewise broadening selections to boost the segment. They are incorporating USB 3.0 capability in card readers, flash drives, hubs, hard drives and PCI Express cards.

China makers of solar cells are stepping up expansion efforts to take advantage of climbing demand. The largest manufacturing base for the line, the country produced 8,000MW of solar cells or 50 percent of the worldwide volume last year. Suppliers estimate the countrys capacity will reach 18GW by end-2011, from 8GW last year and 6.5GW in 2009. Europe remains the key market, representing 81 percent of global requirements. North America and Asia, which are entering a fast-growth phase, are expected to follow. Worldwide PV installations rose to 18.2GW, surging by 139 percent YoY in 2010, according to market research company Solarbuzz.

JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd raised capacity to 2,000MW in 2010, surpassing First Solar of the US and positioning itself as the biggest manufacturer in China and the world. Fellow maker Suntech Power has also been topping the US player since 3Q10, relegating the latter to third place. The fourth in rank is another local venture, Yingli Green.

This year, JA has entered into an agreement with the local government of Hefei in Anhui province to build a factory for solar PV products. The first phase of the construction will

commence before the end of the year and operations by 2012. The targeted annual capacity is 3GW. Recently, the company started operating its 20 new production lines. Suntech Power and Yingli Green, meanwhile, are penetrating the vertical industrial chain through silicon slice processing and by opening power stations. This is to lower costs and widen profit margins. In addition to rising demand, China makers are looking to benefit from new opportunities. The Japan government, for instance, may plan to install a 1GW PV system where the quake happened, according to Digitimes Research. In Europe, higher electricity prices may push solar energy adoption further.

To keep up with these developments, the local industry is waiting for R&D on and production of PECVD equipment to gather steam after the first local one came out of Shanghai. The supply of the high-end machine, which is key to the manufacture of thin-film solar cells, remains dominated by Applied Materials.

Chinas CCL industry is forecast to maintain growth in the next five years on the back of strong demand for PCBs, which are employed in consumer electronics products and industrial applications. In line with this, makers are striving to improve quality as CCLs determine the performance, reliability, stability and power consumption of boards. While suppliers gear production toward low-end types at present, future trends will point to highgrade, environment-friendly CCLs to complement requirements for

slimmer PCBs. Upscale HDI and multilayer boards will lead the category in the next five years with increased production of 4 to 20-layer laminates. Halogen- and lead-free CCLs that can withstand high temperatures will be the mainstream. These variants represent 40 percent of total supply at present. Key maker Shanghai Copp er Clad Laminate Co. Ltd commenced mass production of upscale HDI and multilayer boards at its third factory in July last year. The supplier churns out

12 million square meters annually. Chinas manufacture pool consists of about 70 players, which include local enterprises, foreign-owned companies and joint ventures. The last two concentrate on HDI core sheets and multilayer CCLs. Production is carried out mainly in the eastern and southern regions. The two areas churned out a combined 270 million square meters in 2009, accounting for 96 percent of the countrys yield, which hit 280 million square meters. The annual output growth rate stands at 20 percent.

Enterprises are reporting thinning margins as a result of high material and labor costs and a strengthening yuan.

China Watch China preparing for full localization of LED manufactureAccelerated LED development is driving China to pursue the localization of its upstream sector to boost selfsufficiency and strengthen the industry. Advanced wafer and chip technology remains a drawback as domestic enterprises continue to rely on foreign technology, particularly for the latter component. To address this, local governments have revised the stimulus program covering the acquisition of MOCVD machines, which are key to diode chip manufacture. Initially, they extended a subsidy of about $1.2 million to $1.5 million per unit to reduce LED companies equipment costs substantially, encourage procurement and therefore increase available domestic capacity. Beginning this year, however, the scheme will be terminated. For Yangzhou, Jiangsu province, the withdrawal will be in July. The overall objective is to encourage homegrown enterprises to venture into MOCVD production, which in turn will minimize LED costs. China hopes to realize manufacture of large-scale units by 2015. In terms of chip turnout, this translates to about 70 percent localization. Until the goal is reached, lower tax rates, accelerated depreciation and free land will continue to be offered as support for companies importing MOCVD equipment. From purchases planned in the next few years, installed units are expected to surpass 1,200. By end-2011, the number will be between 700 and 800, from about 330 in 2010. At present, the supply of the machines is dominated by Aixtron and Veeco. Spurring these efforts are upbeat projections placing Chinas LED industry scale at $75 billion by 2015, or a 42 percent CAGR surge amid rising demand from backlighting and lighting devices. Last year, this was at about $18.7 billion. In terms of share, epitaxial chips have 70 percent, and packaging and application 10 to 20 percent each. At present, China has more than 3,000 LED suppliers, with 2,000 in applications, 600 in packaging and more than 60 in wafer epitaxial and chip. Over 85 percent of them are based in the Pearl River and Yangtze River Delta regions, northern area and Min Delta. The line is among the strategic emerging segments listed by the State Council and has become a hotspot for investment. in sales by 2013 or double the level reached two years ago. The annual rate of increase surpasses 15 percent, according to the China Electronics News. Makers in the segment attribute this development to wide adoption in past and upcoming world events held in China. These include the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai and the Asian Games in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, and the Universiade this year. Suppliers are also counting on the positive effect of buoyant prospects for the line globally, with further product exposure in the 2012 Olympic Games and the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Full-color variants, in particular, are expected to lead with annual sales growth of about 30 percent in 201013 based on statistics from the China Electronic Components Association. By the end of the period, this will touch nearly $2.8 billion, representing 78 percent of the countrys total for LED displays. The type has the advantages of high brightness and vivid color, in addition to low power consumption. For these attributes, LED displays are replacing neon light counterparts in various indoor and outdoor installations, including those used in advertising,

stadiums and other public places. At Nanjing Lopu Co. Ltd, the line represents more than 80 percent of revenue. The supplier is one of the major sources of LED displays used in the 2008 Olympic Games and 2010 World Expo. Dalian Luming Light Co. Ltd is among the makers that have released variants with IPR. As a showcase, it installed a 3,700sqm curtain unit in Dalian, Liaoning province. Said to be the largest in Asia, the model boasts HD and transparency, and resistance to elevated temperatures. It uses locally sourced LED chips. To strengthen competitiveness, local manufacturers will continue with R&D efforts. This year, enhanced luminous efficiency and stability, low power dissipation and long operating life are the objectives.

China manufacturers of magnetic materials in Dongyang in Zhejiang province will continue to boost production and R&D in the next five years. This is in line with efforts to solidify the citys status as a key local and global hub for the segment. Dongyang accounts respectively for 37 and 15 percent of Chinas and the global total capacity. Hengdian DMEGC Magnetic Co. Ltd has been increasing output by 10 to 20 percent in past years. It has invested $20 million in a MnZn project, which is currently under construction. Scheduled to commence mass production in December this year, the factory is expected to realize total sales of $20 million by 2012. For this year, Hengdian DMEGC hopes export sales will surpass $100 million as product qualification rate

reaches 99 percent. The countrys largest manufacturer of permanent and soft ferrite magnets, it owns 16 and 10 percent share of Chinas total yield for the categories. Zhejiang Kaiven Holding Co. Ltd, on the other hand, has invested close to $1.5 million in the reconstruction of its factory and the installation of new production and test equipment. In addition, suppliers will continue to focus R&D on upscale models until 2012. They will aim for the communications, information technology and automotive sectors. Applications cover LED products, energy-saving home appliances, 3G devices and intelligent power supplies. Hengdian DMEGC will concentrate on updating technology used in highperformance materials such as DMR95,

DMR47, DM50B and DMR24. Zhejiang Kaiven, on the other hand, has introduced upscale KV40/40 magnets, which are widely used in automotive motors. Based on sales, Dongyang is expected to generate $1.4 billion of Chinas $7.4 billion total by 2015. Its exports will touch $500 million. T h e c i t y p l a y s h o s t to 12 2 manufacturers and up to 30,000 workers in the line. It boasts two dedicated zones, the Hengdian Electronic Industr y Park and the Lizhai Industry Park. Both have been at trac ting up - and downstream suppliers of magnetic materials locally and from abroad. Dongyang was designated as the national magnetic materials base in 2006, the national magnetic material technology innovation center in 2009

and Chinas magnetic materials city last year. Overall, China churns out 830,000 tons of ferrite magnets, 480,000 soft ferrite and 120,000 NdFeB. These represent 65, 70 and 90 percent of the global total, according to statistics from the China Electronic Components Association.

not suitable for low temperatures. Amita Technologies Inc. said LiCoxNiyMnzO2 has a higher energy density and is more compact, making it suitable for EVs. To ensure the stability of this chemistry, Amita and some companies add self-terminated oligomers with hyperbranched architecture, developed by Taiwans Industrial Technology Research Institute. The measure prevents battery explosion during car accidents. For motors, enterprises said induction types are a better choice for EVs than magnet variants as the former do not contain rare-earth metals. This is because the magnetic field created by the latter category could be weakened by heat. In addition, magnet kinds are in short supply and cost high. Copper rotors are used in induction motors. They enhance efficiency, and reduce weight and size. Fukuta Elec. & Mach. Co. Ltd has developed a vacuum die casting technology, and is working on innovating design and production techniques for the component. It is targeting to roll out units with a compact size, light weight and high power density, which are the major requirements of EVs.

In terms of cell choices for battery packs, makers employ either smallor large-cell solutions. The former lowers the cost of cells and enables better heat dissipation with high usage security. Tesla and BMW are among the adopters. The latter option offers fewer PCBs, and elevated reliability and efficiency. Security testing, however, is still ongoing. All these under takings are in preparation for the projected growth in EV shipments in the years ahead. Worldwide car sales volume, including gasoline models, HEVs, plug-in HEVs and BEVs, will reach 100 million units by 2020, according to Frost & Sullivan. Taiwan suppliers are confident of capturing a large market share through strong R&D and production capability in materials, components, modules, subsystems and systems integration. They offer battery anode and cathode inputs, isolation membranes and electrolyte fluid. There are also sources for magnetic steel sheets and strips, and enameled wire used in motors. As for components and modules, the range includes batter y cells and modules, motors, controllers of power electronic systems, and

harness and reduction gears. In system manufac turing and integration, enterprises provide battery pack services, and battery management and reduction gear box and power systems. Batter y packs make up 30 to 50 percent of total EV component costs, while power systems and car electronic device components account for 20 to 25 percent and 10 percent, respectively. The last has electric power steering and vacuum system for brakes. Power systems consist of motors, drivers and reduction gears. Motors can be induction, magnet or DC series. The major suppliers in Taiwan are Fukuta, Shihlin, Tatung and Delta. For batteries, the key cell providers are Amita, E-One, Pihsiang and Phoenix Silicon. The module sector has Simplo, Dynapack, Celxpert and TD HiTech. The main sources of cathode and anode materials, meanwhile, are Formosa Energy & Material, Advanced Lithium Electrochemistry, China Steel and Chuang-hua. Currently, the major buyers of EV components are Japan, Europe and US carmakers. Mainland China is gradually gaining market share.

Solutions providers match surveillance product trendsDevelopments in the surveillance industry are fueling Taiwans R&D on related ICs, camera modules and DVR cards. HD video enhancement and low light recording are the two main trends for CCTV and IP cameras. Makers in the island are therefore rolling out components supporting better resolution. Grain Media Inc., for instance, has released SoCs with 5MP and 1080p. It is developing technologies for IP cameras that will enable high integration and quality, and less power consumption at more attractive prices. R&D initiatives include HD encoders with a lower bit rate and elevated image resolution to meet requirements on data fidelity, selfprotection and event awareness. The supplier is also eyeing components for next-generation NVRs and HD CCTVs. These involve multiformat encoders and decoders, full-HD processing from capture to display with graphic engine, and SoCs with advanced processing such as 55nm technology. Grain Media said USB TV cameras will be popular in coming years. Its portfolio now includes models that support H.264 encoding and up to 1080p resolution at 30fps. Other enterprises offer components with high-resolution recording under low light of 0.01 lux. Mainstream units currently work at less than 0.1 lux, and have 1080p resolution at 30fps and up to 1,000 TVL. For sensors, most Taiwanmade SoCs support Sony, Aptina, Omnivision, Himax Imaging, Sharp and Panasonic units. An image signal processor and wide dynamic range function are commonly integrated into such solutions to stabilize image. The H.264 has become the mainstream recording format, especially for IP models, as it occupies only one-third of the storage size of MPEG-4.
