The clinical electrocardiogram (ECG) records the
changing potentials of the electrical
fields imparted by the heart.

The normal heart beat is initiated by spontaneous firing of the sinus (SA) node in the right upper chamber of the heart (right atrium)
![Page 7: Electrocardiography i May 2000 Final](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062217/5695d0de1a28ab9b02943300/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
The activation wave passes through the muscles of both atria, activating them to contract
![Page 8: Electrocardiography i May 2000 Final](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062217/5695d0de1a28ab9b02943300/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
The electrical wave of activation reach the atrio- ventricular node
![Page 9: Electrocardiography i May 2000 Final](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062217/5695d0de1a28ab9b02943300/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
The activation rapidly descends the “Bundle of His”
![Page 10: Electrocardiography i May 2000 Final](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062217/5695d0de1a28ab9b02943300/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
The activation then spreads rapidly through the special conduction tissues of the ventricles
![Page 11: Electrocardiography i May 2000 Final](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062217/5695d0de1a28ab9b02943300/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
There follows a short period of relative inactivity recorded as the ST segment
![Page 12: Electrocardiography i May 2000 Final](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062217/5695d0de1a28ab9b02943300/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Then the recovery wave spreads over the same pathway
“recharging the heart”
