Further information:
Applied Storage SystemsWe optimize the integration and the operation of energy
storage for various applications, focusing on the entire system
in an interdisciplinary approach. Based on simulation and
modeling we advise our customers and partners along the
complete value chain. We also help to ensure the safe, reliable
and high performance operation of the electrical energy sup-
ply, which is the basis for bankable and insurable projects. Our
services comprise:
n realization of lighthouse projects
n business case development
n consulting during complete life cycle of storage projects
n system modeling, analysis and optimized system design
n simulation based storage sizing
n energy management systems
n technical due diligence: site inspection, testing, monitoring
Battery TestingWith the increasing deployment and growing complexity of
battery storage, comprehensive testing and verification have
become essential. Otherwise system errors, incorrect installa-
tions or inadequate system operation can lead to performance
failures, financial losses or even damage and accidents.
Therefore, we provide testing and verification from battery
cells up to complete systems – customer-specific and according
to established standards. (e.g. UN38.3, IEC 62133, IEC 62619,
IEC 62841). Our services comprise:
n aging: calendric and cyclic
n safety: components and systems incl. functional safety
n reliability: consideration of operating conditions and
system behavior with aged components
n performance: efficiency and effectiveness
n end-of-line quality control for cell production
n system design validation by destructive testing
n validation of thermal runaway mitigation
Battery Cell Technology We conduct research on new materials, innovative cell
architectures and new production processes. We accompany
our work with techno-economical considerations and cell
simulations in order to evaluate the economic efficiency and
technological effectiveness of our approaches.
Our services comprise:
n development and characterization of materials and
battery cells
n development of process technologies
n aqueous systems for stationary energy storage
n lithium-ion battery cells
n solid state battery cells
n technical and economical analyses (TCO)
n life cycle analyses (LCA)
Battery EngineeringAlong the entire value chain we provide highly professional
R&D services for battery system solutions in which we opti-
mize various stationary, electromobile and portable applica-
tions with specific boundary conditions and requirements. We
develop holistic approaches, which include advanced measures
for increased safety and reliability.as well as prolonged
lifetimes. Our services comprise:

Powerful electrical energy storage systems are essential for
the efficient and reliable use of fluctuating, renewable energy
sources as well as for electromobility and portable devices.
Depending on these various application scenarios, the require-
ments for rechargable battery systems can differ tremendously.
Fraunhofer ISE has made the optimization of battery systems
along the entire value chain a priority: from the material and
cell to the complete system up to the integration into the
application. For battery materials, cells, modules and systems,
we offer extensive R&D services. These encompass the analysis
and exploration of advanced material combinations and cell
architectures, the investigation of new battery cell production
processes including cell characterization, techno-economical
evaluations and life cycle assessment. We analyze aging
mechanisms and approaches to increase cycling stability and
lifetime. We also develop entire battery system prototypes,
including thermal management and battery management. Be-
yond this, we support our partners by offering comprehensive
testing services. Within field projects we facilitate the integra-
tion of electrical energy storage into diverse applications and
provide the corresponding quality assurance. Examples include
stationary battery storage units for commercial and industrial
applications as well as applications in electric mobility, from
light electric vehicles to passenger cars up to the electrification
or hybridization of planes and ships.
With our comprehensive and long-term experience, innovative
ideas and state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, we support
clients and partners such as
n suppliers of materials and battery cells
n production and characterization equipment industry
n battery system suppliers
n system integrators, OEMs
n system operators and utilities
n project developers, banks, insurance companies
