o ENSURE YOU VIEW THIS POWER POINT AS A SLIDE SHOW.

o EVERY LINK YOU SEE FOLLOW THE DIRECTION AND GO TO THE LINK BY CLICKING ON IT

o GO THROUGH THIS POWER POINT SLIDE BY SLIDE.

o DON’T NOT SKIP ANY SLIDES

oWe all could identify that materials can conduct

electricity and combining them together we can

create a continuous path electricity can travel

forming a circuit which is what we will be looking at

today!!!Hurray !!

What are electrical circuits

o An electrical circuit is a continuous path in which an electrical current flow through. Electricity can one travel if the paths are electrical conductors .

o So if we can hook up conductors in a continuous path like a circle (not necessarily the shape of a circle) to each other with a power supply electricity would flow and it would be called an electrical circuit….got it?

LETS GET TO THE FUN PART

Ok! Expansion time

o So now we have gotten a fun and simple explanation to circuits and so on, let’s expand our knowledge to what we ought to know at this level.

COMPONENTS

CAN EXIST IN DIFFERENT WAYS

ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS

o HERE ARE THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS WE SHOULD KNOWo CELLo BATTERYo LAMP/BULBo SWITCHo VOLTMETERo AMMETERo RESISTORo VARIABLE RESISTORo TRANSFORMERo FUSE*USING THE LINK GIVEN BELOW OR ANY OTHER WEBSITE OF

YOUR CHOICE, FIND THE SYMBOLS OF THE ABOVE LISTED COMPONENTS

Checkpoint

o Now that we have learnt the symbol for these electrical components……what do we do with them?

o Well combining them together creates a circuit and using the symbols we have found produce a circuit diagram.

Page 12: Electrical circuits It’s a shocking experience.

CIRCUIT DIAGRAM

o A CIRCUIT DIAGRAM IS ONE WHICH SHOWS HOW AN ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT IS SET UP. INSTEAD OF DRAWING THE ACTUAL COMPONENTS SYMBOLS ARE USED TO MAKE THE DRAWING MORE SIMPLE. PUTTING THE COMPONENTS TOGETHER IN A CONTINUOUS (NON ENDING) FLOW IS SIMPLY A CIRCUIT DIAGRAM

Page 13: Electrical circuits It’s a shocking experience.

A SIMPLE CIRCUIT DIAGRAM LOOKS LIKE THISStart

with the battery

Then connect wires from one end to other endof the battery

Then any other electrical component can be added

Page 14: Electrical circuits It’s a shocking experience.

Checkpointo Draw a circuit diagram to include the

following o A cell ( note 1 cell is usually 1.5v the a 4.5v

battery will be three cells together)o A switch ( usually goes after the battery)o Two bulbs one after the other.o An ammetero A variable resistorHiint …. Start with the battery and work your

way from the positive terminal(end) of the battery to the negative terminal.

That was easy wasn’t it?

Did you know?

o Did you know that there are different types of circuitso Series circuitso Parallel circuits

Page 17: Electrical circuits It’s a shocking experience.

Checkpoint

o What do you think parallel means?o What do you think series means?o If a circuit is in series and a bulb stops

lighting would the others still light? Explain why.

o If a circuit is in parallel and a bulb stops lighting would the others still light? Explain why.

Page 18: Electrical circuits It’s a shocking experience.

Notes o Series circuit is a circuit where the electrical

components are connected one after the other in a continuous loop and there is only one path where the current can flow. If one of the component does not work the circuit is as it is broken and no current flow through the entire circuit. It is like having an open switch

o Parallel circuit is a circuit where there is more than one path where the electricity can flow. This means that not all the components are connected one after the other. If a component does not work it does not mean that the others will not.

RELEVANCE TO ME

o Ok then I get circuits, electrical components, circuit diagrams, parallel and series circuit….but what does that have to do with me?

o Think about the applications of electricity and circuits and how important circuits are to your life…e.g. TV, laptops, lights at home etc
