Electrak has led the power distribution market for cavity floor solutions since 1984 when it

launched the first small power track system. With minimal parts and push-fit assembly,

this flexible system is easy to install and minimises disruption as office layouts evolve.

DESIGN AND INSTALLATION

The system consists of continuous lengths of track

(generally arranged in parallel format) which are fed from

the distribution board via track feed boxes and can be

installed in floor voids as low as 48 mm.

Track lengths fit together using integral track connectors

for quick assembly with access to power via tap-offs from

the shuttered outlets.

Electrak power track is a compact system that can be installed in floorvoids as low as 48 mm

Track feed boxes are provided with one or two 25 mm diameter holessuitable for MICC, armoured cables or single core cables in conduitTrack lengths connect together and to track feeds using the integralconnectors on each length

Track lengths should always be secured using the integral floor fixingbrackets ; three on the 3·6 m length and two on 2·4 m, 1·8 m or 1·2 mlengthsAccess to power is provided along the track length by simply pluggingtap-off units into shuttered socket outlets. These tap-off units feed alltypes of conventional floor service outlet boxes or feed workstationsdirectly through the floor via 4 mm2 or 1·5 mm2 insulated conductorscontained in flexible metal or VO rated nylon conduit. When connectingtap-offs directly through the floor via grommet outlets to workstationscare must be taken to ensure that the tap-off length is adequate

The dual power track system has both standard and low noise / cleanearth systems incorporated. As well as dual tap-offs, both standardand low noise / clean earth tap-offs can be plugged into any socketoutlet along the track length. The dual tap-off incorporates bothstandard and low noise cables

Optimum layout flexibility is achieved by positioning track lengths amaximum of 5·2 m apart and 2·5 m from the wall, and by connectingthe 3 m tap-off units to floor outlet boxes. This means every part of thefloor area can be served. Flexible interlinks can be used to overcomeobstructions or used as corners if required

■ Special fixing brackets

When installing track off-floor, Electrak special fixing brackets raisetrack by 21 mm. Ensure brackets are spaced 600 mm apart andalways have support under the integral track connector and track feed.Failure to do so may undermine the integrity of the system

DZ1210 raised off-floor fixing brackets are spaced at 600 mm centresalong track. Also use bottom half of bracket under track feed andflexible interlinkDZ1230 raised off-floor fixing brackets are always used under integraltrack connectors. Track is secured to raised brackets using the track’sintegral fixing bracket

BS 7671 : 2008 IEE Wiring Regulations require accurate determinationof the total earth loop impedance, which must be sufficiently low toallow the protective device to operate within the specified time, whichfor socket outlets is 0·4 seconds. The values relevant to Electrak forcalculating the earth fault loop impedance are shown in the electricaltest data table, see opposite

■ Durability

Electrak systems are superbly designed and extremely robust. Theycan be expected to stand up to all normal site conditions. Electrak hasbeen short circuit strength tested by ASTA

■ Installations with high protective conductor currents

All unfused tap-offs comply with Regulation 543·7 without the need foradditional earth conductors. Regulation 543·7·1·3 (ii) states “a singlecopper protective conductor having a cross-sectional area of not lessthan 4 mm2, complying with the requirements of Regulations 543·2 and543·3, the protective conductor being enclosed to provide additionalprotection against mechanical damage, for example, within a flexibleconduit”For 543·7 installations with high protective conductor currents requiringfused tap-offs, a 543·7 compliant tap-off must be used. Normally fusedtap-offs incorporate 1·5 mm2 conductors, however in the fused 543·7tap-offs, the 1·5 mm2 earth conductor is replaced with a 4 mm2

conductor and therefore complies with Section 543·7·1·3 (ii)

■ 32 A tap-off unit

The 32 A tap-off unit comprises an unfused tap-off with either 2·8 m of16 mm / 20 mm diameter flexible metal conduit or VO rated nylonconduit both with integral 4 mm2 LSOH conductors

These units are designed to comply with regulation 434·2·1 of the IEE Wiring Regulations by virtue of the following :• maximum length of cable is 3 m• it is factory assembled and fully tested item with cable installed inhigh quality flexible conduit

Fault condition protection for the tap-off assembly and the floor boxsocket outlets is delivered by the circuit protection deviceDisconnection time for socket outlets is 0·4 seconds (Regulation411·3·2·2). The Electrak system meets this requirement

Tap-off units in excess of 3 m should only be used if they contain a fuseor the power track is protected by a 32 A rated protective device

■ Installation

To connect and disconnect Rotasoc modules

1. Connection / disconnection to be made by a competent person

2. Check that both male and female ends have the same colour coded busbarshield

3. Turn modules over and release the red cam-lock lever with a smallscrewdriver into the upright position

4. Locate male and female ends and push together until fully closed

To fix modules to surface

1. Flip up all rubber screw cover caps with aflat blade screwdriver

2. Insert through all fixing holes no. 8 pozi-panscrew or M4 bolt to required length

3. Tighten screw / bolt down to mountingsurface

4. Push rubber screw cover caps down

5. Press the red cam-lock lever over until flush with the casing to lock the modules together

6. To disconnect, reverse the procedure

BS 6396 : 2008 was published with regard to the use of electricalequipment within general office furniture and screens. This standardsets out in its scope the use and testing of electrical socket outlets and associated wiring when used together with a 13 A BS 1363 fusedplug and makes provision for the routing of cables through furniture

A note on individual socket fusing - BS 6396 Compliance :

The standard requires individual socket fusing (as per the table below)

BS 7671 : 2008 (17th Edition). The Health and Safety Executive statesthat installations which conform to the standards laid down in BS 7671 : 2008 are regarded by the HSE as likely to achieveconformity with the relevant parts of The Electricity at WorkRegulations 1989

Special note should be taken of Regulation 543.7 within BS 7671 : 2008 – earthing requirements for the installation ofequipment having high protective conductor currents

Regulation 543.7 has particular importance when there is arequirement for a quantity of information technology equipment beingsupplied from a final circuit in a location where the protective currentexceeds 10 mA in normal use. Due to current in the protectiveconductor arising from the use of IT equipment, there is a requirementto provide a mechanically protected 4 mm2 conductor (543.7.1.3(ii)).Rotasoc achieves this when wired in accordance with the installationsheets by providing mechanically protected 5 mm2 earth conductorswithin the product

Below is a brief outline of the main criteria within the standards :

BS 6396 : 2008 was published with regard to the use of electricalequipment within general office furniture and screens. This standardsets out in its scope the use and testing of electrical socket outletsand associated wiring when used together with a 13 A BS 1363 fusedplug for mains supply and makes provision for the routing of cablesthrough furniture

For compliance with this standard, socket outlet configurations 2 or 4outlets should be individually fused at 5 A and 6 outlets individuallyfused at 3·15 A

A note on individual socket fusing – BS 6396 Compliance :

The standard requires individual socket fusing (as per the table below)

BS 7671 : 2008 (17th Edition). The Health and Safety Executive statesthat installations which conform to the standards laid down in BS 7671 : 2008 are regarded by the HSE as likely to achieveconformity with the relevant parts of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989

Special note should be taken of regulation 543·7 within BS 7671 : 2008 - Earthing requirements for the installation ofequipment having high protective conductor currents

Regulation 543·7 has particular importance when there is arequirement for a quantity of information technology equipment beingsupplied from a final circuit in a location where the sum of theirprotective currents exceeds 10 mA in normal use. Due to current inthe protective conductor arising from the use of IT equipment, there isa requirement to provide mechanically protected 4 mm2 conductor(543·7·1·3(ii)). Intersoc achieves this when wired in accordance withthe installation sheets by providing mechanically protected 5 mm2

protective conductors within the product

1. Connection / disconnection to be made by a competent person

2. Before connecting modules ensure they are the correct way up and in line

3. Push modules together one at a time

6. Always end module run with blank end cap or interconnect

1. Insert through all fixing holes no. 8 pozi-pan screw or M4 bolt to required length

LIGHTING CONTROL SYSTEMS

Lightrak employs the tried and tested KNX (European

Electrak’s busbar trunking system comprises continuous lengths of galvanised steel trunking in either a natural or painted finish available in 2 mand 3 m lengths with an integral connector and pitched tap-off outlets on one or both sides

Each trunking run commences with a feed unit for electrical cable termination. The connection between the trunking, the feed unit andsubsequent trunking lengths is push fit and requires no tools to terminate the connection or ensure good earthing. Each complete track run isfinished with an end stop. Flexible lengths can be used to overcome obstructions or used as corners where required

The trunking system is available with IP 4X or IP 54 ingress protection, fully factory tested and ASTA approved to BS EN 60439-2 : 2008
