WHAT IS A SABBATICAL YEAR? DO I STILL HAVE TO GO TO LECTURES? A sabbatical year is a year out of your studies or following your final year of study. During this time you would work as one of the five full-time elected officers of the Students’ Union. Most students choose to stand for election in their final year, taking office for the year following their degree however, you can choose to take a year out midway through your studies and the University will keep your place on your course open until the following year. DO I STILL QUALIFY AS A STUDENT WHILE ON A SABBATICAL? Yes and No! Within the University you will be considered a full-time student officer and as such you retain the right to vote in student elections and have a say on student policies, etc. Outside the University you will be considered the same as any other working individual and as such would need to start paying Council Tax on your home. DO I HAVE TO PAY TUITION FEES WHILE ON A SABBATICAL? No! In fact you will earn money as an elected officer of the Students’ Union. DO I HAVE TO PAY TAX WHILE ON A SABBATICAL? Yes! You would pay income tax through your salary and council tax on your home. HOW MANY HOURS WILL I HAVE TO DEDICATE TO A FULL-TIME POSITION? If you are elected to a full-time role then you would work 37 hours per week from 1st July until 30th June. There will also be a number of days before you start where your predecessors hand over to you. HOW MANY HOURS WILL I HAVE TO DEDICATE TO A VOLUNTARY POSITION? These are voluntary roles, to which you can devote as much time to as you feel able. An average of 2 hours per week over term time is a guideline for the minimum time required to make the most of the roles. WHERE WILL THE WORK BE BASED? You will be based at the Students’ Union offices at City Campus and will share an office with the other elected officers. However, you should spend your time out across the various campuses, talking to and representing students, so you’ll never be in one place all of the time. CAN I RUN FOR MORE THAN ONE POSITION? No! Each role has that much responsibility that it would be impossible for you to do more than one role if you happened to win each election. (The only exception is the NUS Delegate) CAN I SUGGEST A FRIEND? Yes! If you know a friend who you think would be good in a certain role and they are a Leeds Beckett student, send their name and email address to leedsbeckettsu.co.uk or complete the online form and we will send them further information about standing for election. DO I GET ANY SUPPORT FROM THE SU IN MY ELECTION CAMPAIGN? Yes! The elections team will be on hand to offer you advice and training on the elections.
