www.elect2eat.eu The rapid development of microelectronics devices and their assembling technologies isaccompanied by the dramatic change of the knowledge required from all technical personnel (engineers, technicians, skilled or even unskilled workers) employed in this field. It causes a contradiction of the high population of unemployment people with the increasing number of working places offered by the electronics assembling companies, in particular in the East parts of the European Union, as such companies move from the West to these regions in the expectation of low salary rates.

The main aims and objectives of the project are to adapt and integrate the innovative content and results already exist at some universities of Central Eastern European region acquired partly from previous Leonardo da Vinci Projects and partly from other innovative projects into a public, multi-lingual training system. Institutions and organizations, whose obligation is to provide lifelong learning opportunities in the region, are granted by the Leonardo support to benefit by use of the innovative e-learning courses and web-based virtual training tools being transferred and adapted. Trainees and teachers of vocational education schools; institutions, associations, enterprises working in the electronics assembling field, as well as, bodies providing guidance, counseling and information services relating to lifelong learning can make good use of virtual training facilities. Abstract

The Consortium of the “ELECT2EAT – E-Learning Education and Continuing Training to Electronics Assembling Technology” Leonardo Life-Long-Learning project is working on the adaptation and integration of the innovative contents and results already existing at some universities of Central East European region acquired partly from previous Leonardo da Vinci Projects and partly from other innovative projects into a public, multi-lingual training system. Trainees and teachers of vocational education schools; institutions, associations, enterprises working in the electronics assembling field, as well as, bodies providing guidance, counseling and information services relating to lifelong learning can make good use of the new innovative virtual training facilities.

1. INTRODUCTION

It causes a contradiction of the high population of unemployment people with the increasing number of working places offered by the electronics assembling companies, in particular in the East parts of the European Union, as such companies move from the West to these regions in the expectation of low salary rates.

By the adaptation and integration of innovative contents and results into a public, multi-lingual training system, the Elect2eat project provides a new innovative virtual training facility for trainees and teachers, for continuing and convergent education, for people who are searching for job and companies that would like to develop their workforce, and for many other fields.

2. EXPECTED RESULTS OF ELECT2EAT

The transferred innovative content will mostly appear in the form of three tangible products.

R1. The Virtual EMS Factory, the virtualized, web-based version of the equipment, their parameters and operation principles, and the processes, which are now used in a typical Electronics Manufacturing Service Factory, like in Foxconn, Flextronics, Sanmina-SCI, Jabil, Celestica, just to mention the first five from the top ten of world-wide ranking. To make a virtual tour in the virtual factory or just to have an impression how it looks like, please visit the EMS Factory at the www.elect2eat.eu website.

R2. EAT e-learning program with three modules (Design for Manufacturing; Printed Circuit Boards; and Assembling & Inspection Technologies) of the most important topics of Electronics Assembling Technology. Each module is a specific web-cast with free navigation possibility, and access to more written and oral explanations, movies and videos, a photo library, self-assessment possibility, etc.

R3. EAT Certified Assessment Option will be a new initiative to use the self-assessment tools of ‘definition matching quiz’ and ‘picture matching quiz’ of the e-learning program to examine the knowledge of the trainee, who would like to acquire a certificate of the successful fulfillment of the training.

Application of the products in the train-the-trainers and demonstration actions during the project lifetime assures the proper progress of the innovation transfer.

3. THE VIRTUAL EMS FACTORY

When visiting the EMS Factory, one can study the manufacturing process as a whole as well as the principle of each process step in a virtual environment. As an example, Figure 1 shows the layout of an electronics assembling line, the principles of the steps are illustrated in Figure 2, while the operations of the equipments are presented by the movies, shots of which are shown in Figures 3, 4, and 5.

4. THE EAT E-LEARNING PROGRAM

The EAT e-learning program has the following three modules:

Design for Manufacturing;

Printed Circuit Boards; and

Assembling & Inspection Technologies,

however, from another point of view, it is considered to have a Design and a Manufacturing module, where the latter includes the PCB, the assembling and the inspection technologies with the following chapters:

Each module is a specific web-cast with free navigation possibility, and access to more written and oral explanations, movies and videos, a photo library, self-assessment possibility, etc.

When you access the training program at the www.elect2eat.eu site, the starting page of the program appears (Figure 6). After pushing the Start button you reach the contents page, where you can select the Chapter and the Elementary Teaching Entity (ETE) you would like to study. If you selected e.g. Chapter 6 and ETE 6.1, the 1st page of the ETE is accessed and then you can easily navigate through the slides by using the buttons in the lower left corner of each slide (e.g. Slide 6.1.4. in Figure 7).

In addition to the navigation possibility provided by the two or four buttons on the left, the main point is that the right hand part of the button bar provides a guide for the access to the database from each slide. This group of buttons (Figure 8) guides and helps the learner to explore all the knowledge of the system by the use of its well-structured system of hyperlinks.

After having navigated with the four left buttons to Slide 2 (Figure 8) and then – for example – to Slide 4 (Figure 9), you can stop at this slide and can study the relevant part of the database by accessing it with the buttons on the right. The functions of the buttons are explained in the followings.

a) The “book” button opens a new window with the comprehensive explanation of the slide, copied from a book. The text, which belongs to the studied example of Slide 4 (Figure 9), can be seen in Figure 10. You can go back to the studied slide by pushing the “book” button – or, in general – the similar button that you used to access the page. In some cases you can find other buttons on these second level pages as well. E.g. in the book pages there is an “audio record” button, which function is described at b).

b) This button starts an audio record, the oral presentation of the same explanation that can be reached also by button a). In this case, however, you can study the figure on the slide while listening its commentary.

c) With the “movie” button you can enter the movie and video store, where you can find – mostly Flash – animations on the operation principles of the processes and machines, and also video clips having taken from working systems. The picture becomes larger if you point onto it (Figure 11), and clicking on it, the movie starts.

d) The “photo” button leads you to the photo and picture gallery of the database. The use of this button is demonstrated in Figure 13, starting from Slide 14 (Figure 12). Similarly to the “movie” option, all pictures become larger if you point onto one of them.

e) The “Internet” button leads the learner to Internet links, providing access to the web sites of high tech manufacturers and service providers.

f) The “more information” button opens a new window with more detailed description of the topic of the slide. One can find a lot of links from the used words to their meanings and definitions.

g) This link is a very important part of the didactic method used by our system [1]. The question mark enters a self-test page, where the learner can check his or her knowledge by answering the questions. If he or she was not satisfied with the collected knowledge, easily can enter the database again and study the principles more thoroughly.

h) The button with a “letter” on it, on the right hand side of the line, refers to the possibility to reach a tutor, whom the learner can consult the problems by e-mail correspondence or using the many different methods of today’s communication means.

CONCLUSIONS

According to the Workplan of the Elect2eat Project, the slides, pictures and movies part of the innovative content transfer, in all the four languages, i.e. in English, Romanian, Hungarian and Slovak, is ready and demonstrated at the first occasion in September 2008. The oral part as well as the self-test pages are under development and will be introduced in the Spring of 2009.

A challenging task for the next year to complete the EAT Certified Assessment Option, which will be a new initiative to use the self-test tools of ‘definition matching quiz’ and ‘picture matching quiz’ of the e-learning program to examine the knowledge of the trainee, who would like to acquire a certificate of the successful fulfillment of the training.
