    ELEC-436Electric Machines and Control

    Winter 2010

Department of Electrical and Computer EngineeringQueen's University, Kingston, Ontario

    Announcement:

Quiz #3 will be held on March 15, 2010 in class

    Course Description:

This course reviews the basic electric machines, such as three phase induction machine and three phase synchronousmachine. After brief review of three phase induction motor, the course begins with the operation and analysis of singlephase induction motor. Double revolving field theory, and the equivalent circuit derived from that, is used to analyze theoperation of the single phase induction motor. Single phase series motor is also discussed and analyzed. Speed controlof single phase induction motor is discussed. Various speed control methods for three phase induction motor, such asvoltage control, variable voltage variable frequency control, slip frequency control, rotor resistor control, etc areintroduced. The block diagram implementation of these control methods is introduced. The characteristics of these controlmethods are compared. Their application is also discussed. The course will also discuss the characteristics andapplication of special motors, such as servo motor, stepper motor, brushless DC motor, PM motor. The characteristics of

three phase synchronous motor will also be discussed. At the end, the dynamic characteristics of DC machine areintroduced.
