LAST MEETING - September 13, 2019 – Kurt Liske: Waste Commission of Scott County
Seventy-one attended on Friday, including these guests: Duncan Cameron, Rotary Club of Naples, FL, Rick Engler, guest of Tom Messer, Dwayne Anderson, guest of Rev. Rich Pokora, Karla Carey, guest of Bill Tubbs and North Scott High School Ser-vice Club members, Kylie McCabe and Emma Hughes. Many sheets were available to volunteer for events including, Golf Outing, Special Olympics Bowling, Shoptoberfest and the Harvest Party. Details of these events are in the calendar section. Jeff Martens sold 50/50 tickets and Jon Cole was the winner of $115.00. Jim Smith was the sergeant of arms and collected $108.00. Scott Case announced his and Nancy’s 50th wedding anni-versary and Steve Suiter gave a health report on Mike Auliff.
Kurt Liske has been with the Waste Commission for seven years, or as he called it, the “Wild World of Solid Waste”. He likes to think that he and his employees make garbage and e-waste look good. In the short time that he has been in charge, he has extended the like of the Scott County Landfill by 20 years. The Waste Commission is self-funded and is not supported by the county or the state. The landfill receives about 130 tons of garbage every day. Several lengths of pipe go down through the garbage and they collect methane gas from the deteriorating trash. They sell this gas to Linwood Mining to use with the stone they mine. The E-waste department received 3 million pounds of electronics last year. The drives are wiped clean and checked and rechecked to be sure no data is left on them. Newer electronics are refurbished and sold on eBay. The Haz-Mat division accepts cleaners, bug spray, paint and pretty much the items you would store under your sink or in the garage. Many products are available to be picked up in that building at the Waste Commission. Kurt says if someone else can use it, why should we work at disposing of it?
Rechargeable batteries are very dangerous and need to come to the E-waste division. If they are broken open, they can cause a major fire. His motto about recycling….WHEN IN DOUBT, THROW IT OUT!!
The 4 Way Test Of the things we THINK SAY or DO
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
