Guatemala – The Old Love Parade

• Dia del Amor y Amistad in Guatemala is a colorful, affectionate affair.

• Guatemalans exchange flowers, chocolates, and cards just like the U.S., but also with friends as well as admirers.

• In Guatemala City, the holiday isn't just for the youth. It is common for locals and tourist to dress up in feathered masks or vivid Mayan attire and partake in Old Love, a senior citizens parade.

chocolates, stuffed animals, and note exchanging!

• Men serenade women, there are a lot of flowers and chocolates given on this day.

What is the purpose of this celebration?

• The purpose of this holiday is to Honor St. Valentin who is the patron of love.

• It is also a day to display your affection for friends, family, and significant others.

What is the Histoy/Orgin• During 3rd century

AD. emperor Claudius the 2nd banned marriages altogether with hopes of a better army. But a defiant young priest, Valentine, continued to marry young lovers in secret. The emperor caught on and sentenced the priest to death.
