Modern bitumen shingles and bitumen membranes have provedto be durable in both scorching tropical and freezing arcticweather conditions. That’s why, for example, in the USA, over80 % of pitched roofs are covered with bitumenroofing shingles!

There is always moisture inside a building and it has atendency to diffuse outward, also through the ventilatedroof space. In this ventilated space humidity may condenseon the first airtight cold surface. If this surface is tiles orsheet metal, humidity may condense on the underside ofit, freeze and melt in the spring to be absorbed by theinsulation or – sometimes it may even seep through thestructure and drip inside. If proper ventilationis lacking, the result may be mould damage.

The strong, tough polyester felt reinforcement ofthe new SuperKatepal Underlay Sheet gives itexcellent tear-resistance.

Roof deckingThe decking should be built of air-dry, rough-sawn T & G boards orsquare-edged rough sawn boards. It must be flush, dry and rigid. Roofingshingles can also be laid easily on existing bitumen felt membraneroofing.

Quantity of roofing materialsThe needed quantities of roofing materials can be calculated easilyusing the instructions on the previous page. Please allow for 2% wastewhen calculating the quantities of roofing shingles.

Quantity of underlayWe recommend use of underlay membrane throughout the roof.SuperKatepal Underlay Sheet or other underlay product manufacturedor approved by Katepal is used as underlay. The quantity of underlayneeded is 1.15 x the roof area.

Insist on the SuperKatepal label on theroofing shingle and underlay packagingfrom your supplier.

Quantity of nailsEach shingle is fixed with four nails. The quantity of galvanised cloutnails needed is 0.06–0.07 kg/m2 of roof area (nail length 25–35 mm).The nails must be long enough to go through the decking.

Quantity of lap cementThe following quantities of Katepal K-36 sealant are neededfor sealing joints:• Chimney base: 3 litres/chimney• Verges: 0.1 litres/metre of verge length• Valleys: 0.4 litres/metre of valley length• Underlay jointing: 0.1 litres/m2 of underlay (not for self-adhesive underlay)
