Curricular Objectives

The curriculum for English 10-1, challenges us to connect with and analyze the texts we study. The objective of an essay is to show that you understand how the story can be understood in parts and that you can make meaning of the way it fits together. This lesson will challenge you to look at the "parts" of this story and future lessons will help you to "synthesize"- put all those pieces together. The curriculum also challenges us to examine how we think and to notice why and when we change our minds. It encourages us to examine our own connections to what we read, so we can see how our opinions our formed by our own experiences too.

Day 1 & 2

There are two stories to read this week, "Half-Husky" and "Lather and Nothing Else". Both stories deal with the reactions to people and events around occurring to characters in the stories. Like any literature, we can look at the actions and reactions of what happens in stories, and apply what we learn to our own lives.

In looking at how the barber deals with his own beliefs when he encounters his customer, and in looking at how the girl (in "Half-Husky") deals with the bully is important. Each of us reacts to situations based on our upbringing and our beliefs. At times we don't act when we should, and other times we don't act because of our natures-beliefs.

Day 1&2

There are questions for reflection in the lesson - questions you should think about, but do not need to hand in. There are also a few questions at the end of the lesson that need to be sent in to me. The hand-in questions deal mainly with trying to think of and understand the theme of the story, "The Half-Husky".

Lather and Nothing Else

MORE ABOUT STORY! As we continue to look at short stories it's important we have a "common" vocabulary to share as we talk about them.

REVIEW the attached handout on Short Story Terminology.(Google Drive)

Let me know any questions you have about the terminology... are there parts you don't understand? Do all the pieces fit in with what you have examined before with stories?

The YouTube video was completed by a group of students as a class project. I don't know who they are, but for a grade 10 project, they did a very good job telling the story.

Conflict

In the midst of conflict, people must make a choice which they think will resolve their problem. In the short story “Just Lather and Nothing Else” by Hernando Tellez, the barber has an internal struggle in which he must first consider his values before making a decision.

The following website discusses the conflict in the story, in more detail.

Half Husky

You are in for a treat! Margaret Laurence is a wonderful author, and this is one of her favorite short stories! The story is taken from a collection of short stories entitled, A Bird in the House.

The stories are semi-autobiographical. Vanessa - the first person narrator's experiences are a reflection of Margaret’s own childhood.

Half-Husky Essay Prep

We are going to use this short story to begin your first major project: a literary essay.

We will take more time on this essay than we will with future essays. This is considered a major assignment.

So... be sure to pay close attention to the activities with this short story and be quick to ask questions.

Day 3/4

Essay writing requires planning.

You should think about the different parts that make up an essay: beginning, middle and end. How does each of these fit together?

Since we have just read "Half Husky" and are talking about essay writing, I have attached information on writing essays dealing with the story "Half Husky." The information talks about finding the theme in the story, and trying to 'prove' it. In other words, what is Margaret Laurence trying to say in the story, and how do we this (from what she writes)?

The information might help you to think about the story, and organize your thoughts though.

Essay Planning

Next week we will start writing our first essay. In the Week 4 folder (This Week), I have included some Essay building handouts that you can take a look at. These handouts will come in handy next week, but I didn’t want to overwhelm everyone with so many handouts for one week! So please read through these handouts to get familiar with them, but to clarify, these handouts do not need to be done this week!
