Don’t Leave the Front Gate Open!By Marc Urias

We have had a few instances where our lock on the front gate has been removed from the daisy chain and attached to the surface of the chain link fence. This of course renders the front gate inaccessible to club members. If our lock is unlocked and on the daisy chain, any of the other individuals who have access to the gate will remove the lock and attach it to the surface of the chain link fence. This preserves the integrity of the locked gate, but leaves our members without access. The solution to the problem: Keep the gate locked except when you are entering or exiting the club. Do not leave the lock open and unattended.

Use of Our Field RangeBy Marc Urias

Many members who use the club have used the round colored cement markers to determine distances to the target. There is a purpose to these markers. We are an NFAA certified range. One of the requirements for NFAA certifications is to have at least one 14-target field range. Our 14-target field range starts at #1, and if you follow the signs you will conclude at target 14. The purpose is that NFAA-sanctioned tournaments use this style of field range. The yellow markers are for animal rounds, which use paper animal targets. The white markers are for field rounds, which use targets with black and white concentric circles. The red markers are for hunter rounds, which use black concentric circle targets with a white bull. The paper animal rounds are fun to shoot and take very little set up time. If you are interested in participating in a club only paper target tournament, send me an email at [email protected].

Fall Harvest 3-D Our annual charity shoot, the Fall Harvest 3-D,

raised $680 to be donated to the Red Cross to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Halloween-themed shoot was lots of fun, and included some special shots set up by 3-D Chairs Sherry and David Martin.

Work Party Summary for 2005Here’s a list of work party credits our members

have earned so far this year. If your name isn’t here, it may mean that no work party credits are recorded for you. If you feel that we’ve made a mistake (and mistakes do happen) call Brian Matthiesen at (949) 395-3955 or email us at [email protected].

You may also notice that no board members’ names are listed here. The board decided some time ago not to include these names in work party summaries because board members’ contributions to the club are ongoing and not easily recorded or quantified. If you have any questions about how much time board members devote to the club, just ask them. You are also heartily invited to run for a board position for next year and find out firsthand.

The San people of the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa have a saying: “When God made this land, he must have been very angry.” Their land offers some of the harshest living conditions imaginable, with rainfall sometimes as low as five inches a year and temperatures that freeze in winter and bake in summer. And yet these resourceful nomadic hunter-gatherers have a tradition of archery and hunting that stretches back thousands of years. Since there are few trees in the Kalahari, the San developed small, lightweight bows only about forty inches long, made of a branch or sapling. Their arrows are ingeniously made of four separate sections of reed and giraffe bone with a metal point, designed so the shaft will break off after hitting an animal. The front portion of the arrow is coated with poison made of crushed spiders, scorpions, or grubs mixed with tree gum. The poison often takes days to bring death, so the San must be excellent trackers to follow and retrieve their kill.

Today, the San’s traditional way of life has practically disappeared. Europeans who colonized Africa tried to “civilize” the San, exploiting them as a source of cheap farm labor. Fearing the loss of their cattle to hunters, they forbade the San to carry bows. Even climate change seems to conspire against the San. The kokerboom, or quiver tree, whose spongy branches have long been hollowed out by the San to make quivers, is dying out due to global warming. Sadly, it may be that one day the only reminder of the San’s former way of life will be their beautiful rock paintings of animals and hunters from a time long ago. —Marla YoshidaThe endangered quiver tree
