Started in 1997, El Shaddai was founded under the aegis of two socially conscious individuals, our Co founders Mr. Matthew Kurian, Managing Trustee and Anita Edgar, who were disturbed by the plight of the children from deprived sections of the society. Our First Shanti Niketan School was started in 1999 at Saligao in a small house with over hundreds of children. The school focus on providing non formal education. With the growing numbers and contribution El Shaddai started sending hundreds of children to Formal schools also. Considering the economic situation of these children, El Shaddai realized that there needed to be an integrated development focus of the child, family and community.

To bring about a holistic change in the society El Shaddai has taken up some initiatives to bring in a positive impact in the life of downtrodden.

E D U C A T I O N―

El Shaddai provides different forms of education to its beneficiaries belonging to the marginalized sections of society through formal, non formal, adult literacy and vocational training courses.

There are 61 million children around the world deprived of their fundamental right to education. Our projects in this area cater to the children of all age groups and backgrounds such as the under privileged and slow learners. They are all given equal opportunity to explore their talents and abilities. Our system of education is child centered and the teaching approach is activity based. The main aim behind starting the educational program is to provide the street children with an all around education in a non-competitive environment. 7.1 million children in India do not go to school. We map drop outs, street children and those who are involved in child labour and then facilitate their transition into schools through enrollment drives. The vocational training program gives emphasis on the capacity building of underprivileged youth from the disadvantaged communities of the society, who cannot pursue long academic career for various reasons.

Gender equality and women empowerment:Many migrant women work as domestic workers or in factories in order to earn a livelihood. The majority of them are single mothers who have been abandoned or divorced. Malnourished children of non working women are taken in Crèche for better care, supervision and monitoring. Women living in slums have fewer opportunities to earn an income. The livelihoods and Income Generation Program addresses these issues by providing them Vocational Training and teaching them skills such as sewing, embroidery, baking, computers, tailoring, crochet, knitting, mehendi courses cooking to increase their income and enhance their quality of life.

Manna Khana:India has the highest number of stunted children because of malnourishment; around 40% i.e. 48.2 million of stunted children under the age of five. Stunted growth is caused by chronic malnutrition in the first one thousand days of a child’s life, from early pregnancy to age 2. Meals on wheels free food distribution program on weekdays is organized. Manna takeaway packets are provided for thousands of poor and needy children & adults living on the streets.

Loan a GoatGi a goat, sheep and chickens. Every year around 500 Goats and chickens are given to the villagers in order to provide the community an alternative means of livelihood.

Shelters/Centers & Daycare for vulnerable:El Shaddai provides residential accommodation, Shelters, Day Care Centers, Community Centers, education, vocational skills, health care, rehabilitation of street children and cottages for the seniors who are attending Universities, Professional Training Centers or working with us as Trainees. The children come from economically underprivileged and desperate backgrounds like those picked up from railway platforms, public places, rag pickers, migrants scrap sellers, commercial sex workers, alcoholics, broken homes, terminal illness/disease Slum children, high-risk environment, prison, schedule castes and tribes who become vulnerable and end up becoming social outcasts.

C o m m u n i t y h ea l t h : T h ro u g h i t s h ea l t h intervention programmes, El Shaddai advocates preventive and curative aspects of health care among the most vulnerable groups of women and children. Even today, almost 5 lakh children in India die before their first birthday due to preventable and treatable causes such as diarrhea, pneumonia and malnutrition.El Shaddai provide services like health awareness programmes, health camps, immunization, camps, counseling, etc.

SCAN – Stop Child Abuse Now. It is a project of El Shaddai involving in advocacy, campaigning and intervention on Child Rights and Juvenile Justice. Recent statistics of rape, child abuse, sexual harassment, child marriages and female foeticide depict the grim reality, which prevails today. It has been observed that children who are victims of various offences require support from the pre-trial stage till the trial is concluded. Oen, aer the conclusion of the trial, the child needs support for the healing process. SCAN provides this psychological and social support and also provides them with legal assistance. The rehabilitation and reintegration of these children which needs to be facilitated shall be taken care of by SCAN. Therefore SCAN provides holistic services for all children as we believe that Every child matters.

Community Development Programmes: Aer working for a two decades in the field of rescuing children at risk, we discovered that the rise in street children in cities is due to the migration of communities from the villages for survival and livelihood. This in turn burdens the infrastructure of the cities, giving rise to socio-economic problems. In order to stop this viscous cycle, El Shaddai has decided to get on Community development projects by adapting one village at a time. We plan to bring about a holistic development through various schemes.

Outreach projects: Wells for life: (Bore-wells): The economy of the villages is fully dependent on agriculture. This in turn depends on the annual rainfall. With global warming and drastic climatic changes, rainfall has become unpredictable. This adversely affects agricultural outputs – the very sustenance of the community. Digging bore-wells provides them with alternative source of water to carry their farming. This has improved the economy of the community and also prevents them from migrating to the cities for better prospects.
