música de banda se distingue por ser una música basada en instrumentos de viento, tanto de bronce como de madera, en cuyas agrupaciones es normal encontrar entre 10 y 20 músicos.

“Actualmente somos 16 integrantes y cada uno realiza un papel importante”, narró Solís, al citar el nombre de sus compañeros.

En la base del grupo figura el nombre de Jesús Rodríguez, a cargo de la tambora. José Contreras domina magistralmente las taro-las. Aldo Lemus, hace lo propio el exponer su talento con la tuba. Hace unos años, en Omaha co-menzó un proyecto artístico que deseaba exponer la músi-ca de banda, uno de los géne-

ros más populares en la cultura mexicana. Al paso del tiempo, su aceptación en la cre-ciente población latina le catapultó hasta volverlos un factor imprescindible en fiestas y bailes de una floreciente sociedad que hoy se une al festejo del décimo aniversario de esta agrupación, la cual se presenta en los escenarios como: “La Inigualable Banda Santacruz.”

En el 2005 se dieron a conocer como Banda Caprichosa. Sin embargo, sus inte-grantes no soportaron la responsabilidad compartida de manejar el grupo, por lo cual

delegaron dicha tarea en una sola persona, Eric Solís, quien les modifico nombre al que actualmente presentan.

“Todos estuvieron de acuerdo en que le pusiéramos Santa Cruz, en homenaje al pueblo donde yo nací, en el estado de Oaxaca [México]”, dijo Solís al recordar los años en los cuales solo eran 10 integrantes. “Actu-almente soy el único de los fundadores del grupo, y puedo testificar que hemos tenido una evolución muy notoria en lo referente a nuestra calidad musical, número de inte-grantes, vestuario y dominio del escenario”.

Solís explicó que el género que conocemos como música de banda forma parte del am-plio universo que es la música regional mexi-cana. Pese a tener un carácter folklórico, la

Siguiendo con la presentación del gru-po, los hermanos Jesús y David Torres han hecho una dupla magistral como encar-gados del trabajo vocal. De igual manera, Josué Hernández expone su atinado trabajo manejando el acordeón. Finalmente, el do-minio de los clarinetes corre a cargo de Juan Guerrero, Armando Corona y Félix Corona.

Juntos, han fusionado sus talentos para ser hoy reconocidos como uno de los máximos exponentes de la música que culturalmente identifica al estado de Sinaloa, de ahí la cla-sificación de “música de Banda Sinaloense”.

Cabe señalar que este género apareció en las últimas dos décadas del siglo XIX cuan-do los músicos comenzaron a tocar cancio-nes mexicanas con ritmos de polka, que los integrantes alemanes llevaron a la frontera México americana durante esos años.

Hoy, su longevidad ha sido acreditada al aumento de la población mexicana en los Estados Unidos, lo cual lleva a que sigan apareciendo más bandas ante la prolifer-ación de festivales y conciertos a lo largo de la unión americana.

Claro que el éxito arrollador de Banda Santa Cruz no ha sido solo un accidente por la demanda comunitaria, pues muchos gru-pos han desaparecido de la escena musical tras exhibir una calidad no grata para el pú-blico conocedor del género.

La Inigualable Banda Santa Cruz no para de ensayar, buscando la perfección musical que denota su sello personal en cada inter-pretación. A nivel vocal, la tesitura de los hermanos Torres se mezcla con una chispa única, que prende al público más exigente ante la calidad interpretativa y su dominio del escenario.

La sección de vientos de Santa Cruz es im-pecable, según su autocrítica, resaltando el tra-bajo de tuba, instrumento símbolo del género.

En la percusión esta un complemento artístico del grupo, que aumenta la fuerza del melodioso sonido que inmediatamente se distingue del resto existente. Más aún al sumarse la tambora, señalado como el gran protagonista del grupo.

“Recientemente incorporamos el acordeón, como una innovación que hizo una persona que admiramos mucho en el ambiente musical [Julio Preciado], lo cual nos permite ofrecer un espectáculo que abarca cumbia, zapateado y todo aquello que ponga el ambiente en cada evento”, explico Solís.

Empresarios locales coinciden en catalo-garlos como uno de los máximos exponen-tes de la Banda en Nebraska y Iowa, cuyo prestigio es garantía de éxito en cada baile

en el que se les anuncia. Resaltan su sencillez como un valor agregado que facilita la ne-gociación con el grupo, mismo que profesa un armonioso trabajo en equipo, gracias a la buena relación entre sus integrantes.

Actualmente, Banda Santa Cruz está pu-liendo su próxima producción discográfica, la cual promete estar conformada por puros temas inéditos, de la autoría de Jesús Torres. Dicho material se habrá de presentar a los medios el próximo mes de junio.

“…Ahora solo nos resta agradecer al pú-blico por su apoyo para seguir en esta ca-rrera. Cada comentario nos ha hecho más fuertes al levantarnos el ánimo o al señalar nuestros errores. Several years ago, an artistic project at Omaha started to bring the spotlight over banda music, one of the most pop-ular genres in Mexican culture. As time

went by, its acceptance grew within the Latino pop-ulation, making it a must at all parties and dances in a flourishing society, that today joins us to celebrate the tenth anniversary of a significant musical band: “La inigualable Banda Santa Cruz.”

They started in 2005 as Banda Caprichosa, but its band members could not stand the shared responsibility of managing the group, which is why they delegated that responsibility to Eric Solis, who changed the band’s name to the one they now use.

“Everyone agreed we should call it Santa Cruz, as a nice homage to the town I grew up in, in the State of Oaxaca [México],” said Solis when he remembered the years in which there were only 10 members in the band. “I’m cur-rently the only remaining founding member of the band, and I can verify that we’ve experi-enced a big evolution in our musical quality, wardrobe and stage presence, along with now having more members in our band.”

Solis explained that the genre we know as ban-da music is only one part of the huge universe that is Mexican regional music. Even though it

has some folkloric elements, banda music sepa-rates itself from other genres because its music is based on wind instruments, of the bronze and wood variety, and by how each band usually has between 10 and 20 members.

“We’re now 16 members in the band, and each has a vital role to play,” said Solis as he mentioned the name of each band members.

Jesus Rodriguez is in charge of the tambora. Jose Conteras bangs the tarolas. Aldo Lemus shows his skills with the tuba. Jaime Rodriguez and Sabino Avalos are the ones who work on the harmonies. The trombones are played by Jose Santa Cruz and Vicente Soria. Eric Solis plays the trumpets along with Ernesto y Jesus Cisneros.

Next we have the Torres brothers - Jesus and David - who are in charge of vocals. Josue Hernán-dez plays the accordion. And last but not least, we have Juan Guerrero, Armando Corona and Felix Corona in the clarinets.

Together, they have combined their talents in order to be recognized as one of the best bands that spotlight the music is culturally linked to the State of Sinaloa, hence why their music is classified as “Sinaloense banda music.”

We must mention that this genre was born dur-ing the last two decades of the 19th century when musicians started to play Mexican songs along with the polka rhythms that German individuals

Today, its longevity can be credited to an in-crease in the Mexican population in the United States, which has also allowed more and more bands to flourish due to the large number of festivals and concerts that now take place across the nation.

But the success of Banda Santa Cruz is no accident since by now many other bands have vanished from the music scene after a poor showcase of their lack of talent in front of an audience with a great taste for the genre.

Banda Santa Cruz constantly rehearses to hone their skill, always in search of perfecting their talent while adding their personal touch to each performance. The Torres brothers’ tessitura is mixed with a unique spark that pleases the most demanding audiences, thanks to their musical quality and their confidence on stage.

The wind section of the band is impeccable, and the tuba’s sound truly shines as the emblem-atic instrument of the genre.

Percussions are a great artistic complement for the group, lifting the harmonious sound of the band by making it different from the rest. When you add the tambora to the mix, the band’s sound is at its best.

“We’ve recently added an accordion to our repertoire as homage to an innovation made by someone we admire in the music scene [Julio Pre-ciado], which allows us to offer a show in which we play cumbia, zapateado and pretty much any-thing to help set the mood for each event,” ex-plained Solis.

Local business owners agree on how the band is one of the most important Banda groups in Ne-braska and Iowa, with the prestige that guarantees the success of each event where they’re featured. They highlight their humbleness as an added val-ue that makes it easier to negotiate with the band, all due of all members of Banda Santa Cruz work as a team thanks to how well they all get along.

Currently, Banda Santa Cruz is putting the fi-nal touches for its next album, and said release will include all new songs composed by Jesus Torres. This album will be presented to the media during June.

“We have to thank our fans for their support during our career. Every comment has made us stronger and it lifts our spirits, and each criti-cism allows us to correct our mistakes. It’s been 10 years now and we continue to give our all on stage, and we promise we’ll continue working to make La Inigualable Banda Santa Cruz the best band it can be,” concluded Solis.

heroes honored that are being honored we have to ask: “Why have so many been overlooked?” It may be true that “half a plate is better than none”, but I want to know why can’t we have the full platter?

During WWII, Guy Gabaldón single-handedly captured over 1,500 enemy soldiers who were in-doctrinated to kill as many Americans as the could before laying down their lives for the emperor. There can be no doubt that a great many lives were saved by Guy Gabaldón and yet no Medal of Honor was ever awarded him, even though he truly deserves one. And so it goes, as anyone who has examined the facts can tell you.

In a combat mission in Fallujah, Iraq Marine ser-geant Rafael Peralta led his men on an assault of en-emy positions. When a grenade was tossed his way, he selflessly threw his body over it to absorb the blast. This devotion to his men has been negated by the reviewers, who have over-ridden the eyewitness testimony of others who were there and insist that he was probably fatally wounded and must have just fallen in that direction. He was a hero and should be acknowledge as one!

Here is a list of other veterans that should have been considered: Macelino Serna, Ramon Rodri-guez, Isaac Camacho, Manuel F. Martinez Jr., Fred Ogas, Ray B. Gonzales Guy Gabaldon, Rumaldo Medina, Rufino Gallegos, Miguel Encinas. and Ga-briel Navarette.

I’m certain that there are more and I realize that not every case can be closely scrutinized and yet I believe a lot more credibility can be had by better examination of eyewitness accounts. During the Clinton Administration the Commander in Chief saw fit to award forty Medals of Honor to our Japa-nese veterans. The question has to be asked; aren’t Latinos deserving of full inclusion also?

Consider that during the War with Mexico, the Civil War and the Indian Wars the Congressional Medal of Honor was common and not really elevat-ed until later, the status of the award has increased significantly.

Today it stands as a testament to the highest valor above and beyond the call of duty.

It should never be regarded lightly but then nei-ther should our heroes.

On March 18 of this year President Obama plans to establish 24 be-lated awards of the Congressional Medal of Honor. More than half

of these twenty-four awards, will be to Latinos. Their stories are widely varied and unique by time and circumstances.

As pleasing as it is to see some Latino heroes fi-nally receiving the recognition they deserve, it is sad that most of the veterans cited will receive a posthu-mous award. Time has not dealt fairly with our he-roes nor has the recognition been complete and so I have mixed feelings about this belated ceremony that has some glaring omissions. I would like to ex-plain some simple facts.

Several notable veterans of the Latino commu-nity have been attempting for years to gain recogni-tion of some impressive narratives that describe our hero veterans. The list is not a complete one but it includes: Pete Limón, Placido Salazar, Alfred Lugo, the late John Lopez and myself, Eddie Morín. We have sought help and publicity from the politicians, the media and the public sector with little to show for it. Even though it is gratifying to see the list of

are no other changes to the application process. “The fees are not changing and eligibility has not changed,” Khansari said.

Even after the application becomes longer in May, immigrants here will be able to continue to get free help through a network of 17 organizations that are working to make citizenship more accessible. They form part of the New Americans Campaign, a na-tional initiative to encourage eligible Legal Perma-nent Residents to apply for citizenship, and are hold-ing a series of public workshops to assist people with their applications.

Their latest citizenship workshop, organized by NALEO Educational Fund, takes place Saturday at the LA public library – which advocates say has been a key partner in the drive to make citizen-ship more accessible.

“What the libraries are doing in the city of Los An-geles are great models,” said Linda Lopez, director of the Office of Immigrant Affairs at the LA Mayor’s Of-fice. “Libraries are safe spaces for a lot of immigrants, places where immigrants have gone for educational opportunities.” The library’s role in bringing together immigrants and providing opportunities for them to become citizens, she said, is “a signature issue for LA that other cities are trying to duplicate.”

But, she said, more work needs to be done.

Nationally, more than eight million immigrants have green cards and are eligible for U.S. citizenship. Yet only 8 percent of them become citizens each year.

Advocates are working to help immigrants over-come some of the barriers that may be preventing immigrants from taking that step. For example, it costs $680 to file for citizenship, but immigrants whose income falls below poverty level qualify for a fee waiver.

Those who don’t speak English well may think that limits their chances of becoming a citizen. But if they have been here for many years, they can qual-ify to take the exam in their native language – some-thing that many immigrants may not be aware of.

But one of the biggest challenges is lack of infor-mation, according to Joseph Oloimooja, a Kenyan American Episcopal priest who became a U.S. citi-zen last September. “People don’t know the differ-ence between being a permanent resident and being a citizen,” he said.

Unlike legal permanent residents, U.S. citizens can vote, travel freely and live free from fear of de-portation. They can also petition their relatives – a key factor for families in Los Angeles, where more than 40 percent of the population is foreign born.

An estimated 1.2 million residents of Los Angeles are eligible to become citizens. That’s more than any other city in the country, except for New York.

Two days after being sworn in as a, U.S. citizen, 71-year-old Tongan American Sione Vanisi, smiled broadly, holding a miniature American flag and proud-

ly showing off his citizenship certificate, as report-ers snapped his photo.

“I was here for 40 years and I’m glad I’m a citi-zen,” he told a roomful of immigrant advocates, lo-cal media representatives and other newly natural-ized citizens at the Los Angeles Central Library.

“My wife always pushed me to file [my citizen-ship application],” said Vanisi, who moved to Ha-waii in 1970. “But I didn’t want to, because I thought I’d lose my land back [home].”

When he learned that becoming a U.S. citizen did not mean renouncing his Tongan citizenship – that he could be a dual citizen – he decided to take the step.

Vanisi got his application just in time. In May, the citizenship application, called the N-400, will become twice as long, going from 10 pages to 21 pages.

“We are trying to get immigrants to come for-ward now,” while the old form is still available, said Nasim Khansari, citizenship network manager of Asian Americans Advancing Justice.

But, she added, it’s important to note that while the application form itself is becoming longer, there

(54 percent) are Mexican. Eight percent are Salva-doran, 5 percent are Filipino, 4 percent are Guatema-lan, 3 percent are Korean, 3 percent are Chinese, and 2 percent are Vietnamese.

Guadalupe Guerrero, who came here 10 years ago from Mexico, says her father lived as a permanent resident for over 20 years and never applied for citi-zenship. “In his mind, the process was very difficult and he didn’t see the need,” she explained.

It was his daughters that changed his mind.“My sisters and I started encouraging him to take

the step, and he did,” she said, “and through that, my sisters and I became legal residents.” Today, she says, she and her sisters all have bachelor’s degrees, and she is now a citizen.

Guerrero said young people have a critical role to play in encouraging their parents to take the step to become U.S. citizens.

Becoming a citizen, advocates said, impacts the entire family.

“If you want true security in the United States,” said Elisa Sequeira, California director of civic engagement for NALEO Educational Fund, “security from fear of deportation, of be-ing separated from your family, to really have roots in the United States that cannot be taken away, you have to become a U.S. citizen.”

OneWorld Community Health Centers ha abierto una nueva clínica en el noroeste de Omaha. La nueva clínica está ubicada en 4229 Norte Calle 90. Abuso de trabajadoresSegún un comunicado reciente, emitido por

Nebraska Appleseed, varios grupos de derechos civiles y trabajadores de empacadoras de carne han testificado ante la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (IACHR) sobre el abuso que los trabajadores se enfrentan en las empacadoras de carne y aves de corral. Según Appleseed la coalición de organizaciones y trabajadores han pedido al gobierno federal “promulgar proteccio-nes de velocidad en las empacadoras y oponerse a la regla peligrosa, propuesto por el Departamento de Agricultura de EE.UU. (USDA) que aumentaría las velocidades de línea.” Omaid Zabih, abogado de Nebraska Appleseed, señaló que “es evidente que las políticas y las prácticas de las empacado-ras de carne de los Estados Unidos y la industria de procesamiento han creado una crisis de salud y seguridad para sus trabajadores.” Nebraska Appleseed y sus socios continuarán compartiendo información sobre este tema y le pedirán al gobi-erno federal a tomar medidas para la seguridad de los trabajadores. oincidiendo con el festejo del Día Mundial del Teatro celebrado el 27 de marzo, se reali-zó la temporada teatral de la obra “Las Her-

manas Padilla”, escrita por Tony Meneses y dirigida por Judy Hart, con el apoyo de Nebraska Arts Council, Lin-coln Arts Council y Nebraska Cultural Endowment.

Hart, co-fundadora de Angels Theatre Company, reunió a un estupendo elenco formado por Mary Douglass (en el papel de Mari), Elizabeth Govaerts (Chave), Lindsay Masin (Lucy), Diane Gonzolas (Fidela), Erin Mills (Marta), Reagan Mills (Cris-tina), Gabriela Ayala (Alejandra), Jillian Carter (Lucha), Shela Shenks (Blanca) y Leticia Martínez Meitzen quien interpretó a la desenfadada Carmen quien en medio del dolor, le provocó a la audiencia muchas genuinas carcajadas.

Durante las 8 funciones ofrecidas en el Johnny Carson Theater de Lincoln del 22 al 29 de marzo, el público disfrutó de la singular historia de 10 mujeres completamente diferentes y de diversas edades, casa-das con los hermanos Padilla, quienes están pelean-do en el campo de batalla, mientras ellas sobreviven su propia lucha esperando noticias en cada uno de sus hogares, hermanadas por una fuerte relación que trasciende los lazos consanguíneos.

Aunado a las caracterizaciones muy particu-lares de cada personaje, la directora Hart incluyó la música original del guitarrista peruano Daniel Martínez, quien con sus composiciones de rumba flamenca interpretadas en vivo, genera el ambiente propio para los diferentes tonos de transición entre escenas, tiempo en el cual y como si se tratara de un baile coreografiado, las actrices participan movien-do mesas y sillas, modificando el punto de encuen-tro de sus charlas: la cocina y el comedor.

Al final de las funciones, la audiencia discutió el mensaje de la obra con miembros de la compañía teatral y líderes comunitarios como Jasel Cantú, Oficial de Información Pública de Nebraska La-tino American Commission (NLAC), quien explicó brevemente los principales elementos simbólicos

utilizados dentro del realismo mágico, donde con-viven esta decena de singulares mujeres haciéndole frente a la pérdida de sus esposos.

Además de la participación de NLAC, la obra tuvo la ayuda de El Centro de las Américas, a través de su director Roger García, para promover los dos talleres que se brindaron a la par de las funciones, uno sobre composición musical con Martínez, y otro sobre dramaturgía impartido por Meneses quien vi-ajó desde Nueva York, su lugar de residencia.

“Se trata sobre aprender a cómo contar historias - enfatizó Meneses al ser entrevistado -, ya que cuan-do inicias el proceso para decir una historia, lo pri-mero que tienes que encontrar es la voz de cada uno de sus personajes. En mi caso lo primero que hago es entender sus pensamientos y sentir sus emociones”.

Meneses reconoció que los papeles de “Las Her-manas Padilla” surgieron a partir de la observación de sus propias tías, y explicó que aunque la obra se desarrolla en México, “el tema de la guerra es univer-sal y lo que estas mujeres sufren puede estar repiti-éndose en todo el mundo”.

Originario de Guadalajara, Jalisco, Meneses vivió la mayor parte de su vida en Dallas, Texas y siendo el menor de su familia, comenzó a escribir obras teatrales a los 18 años. Actualmente a sus 29, calcula tener unas 20 piezas en su repertorio, expuestas en escenarios de New York, Austin, Chicago, San Di-ego, Minnesota, Iowa, y en el Williamstown Theatre Festival.

Graduado de la Universidad de Texas en Austin y con una maestría obtenida en Iowa Playwrights Workshop, Meneses añadió que su interés por el en-torno femenino nace del hecho que como en muchas familias latinas, la columna vertebral sea la figura materna: “Mi mamá es mi mayor inspiración, y de hecho todos mis libros favoritos y obras de teatro preferidas han sido escritas por mujeres. Desafor-tunadamente, en el mundo del teatro tal represen-tación casi no existe, mucho porque hay más escri-tores hombres, así como obras donde los personajes

protagonistas son hombres. Pero a mi eso me aburre por ser algo tan común, por eso me gusta crear per-sonajes femeninos, y además, que sean voces latinas”.

A propósito, Meneses comentó: “Soy miembro de un grupo de escritores en Nueva York (del pre-miado Youngblood, del Ensemble Studio Theatre), y soy el único latino entre unos 20 profesionales, así que nuestra presencia en este medio no es algo muy común, pero las historias de los latinos también merecen ser contadas y escuchadas”.

Cabe destacar que su trabajo como creador latino fue reconocido en el 2010 con el Premio a la Drama-turgia Latina otorgado por KCACTF. Algunas de sus obras más conocidas son The Boy in Black y Guada-lupe in the Guest Room, esta última tocando el tema de la barrera del lenguaje, algo que él experimentó en casa con sus padres, pero que no impidió que ellos lo apoyaran en esta carrera.

“Mis papás siempre mostraron una gran sensibili-dad artística y crecí viendo cantar a mi mamá, mien-tras mi padre tocaba la guitarra - dijo Meneses -, así que cuando empecé a tomar interés en el teatro el-los me apoyaron mucho y lo celebraron con orgullo porque me imagino que vieron algo de ellos en mi”.

Y aunque Meneses agregó que “en el mundo del teatro sucede algo muy particular y es que la gente que se dedica a esto no lo hace por dinero, ya que de-safortunadamente no es una profesión muy práctica con la que puedas sostener una vida”, el joven escri-tor dejó en claro que está satisfecho con su elección “porque puedes llevar una vida espiritual muy rica”.

Para Meneses hacer teatro es algo importantísimo “porque las historias son parte de la comunidad hu-mana, y aprendemos a vivir con los conflictos que vemos, lo mismo que con las tragedias y los dramas”.

“Por eso quisiera que más personas latinas y prin-cipalmente jóvenes, asistieran al teatro”, concluyó Meneses, complacido con el trabajo de la genial Hart y del grupo de talentosas actrices, “porque es la primera vez que ellas se eligen para representar a los personajes de la edad que deben tener en mi obra”.

by Judy Hart, shined on stage thanks to the support of the Nebraska Arts Council, the Lincoln Arts Council and of the Nebraska Cultural Endowment.

Hart, co-founder of the Angels Theatre Com-pany, gathered an amazing cast with Mary Doug-lass (playing the role of Mari), Elizabeth Govaerts (Chave), Lindsay Masin (Lucy), Diane Gonzolas (Fidela), Erin Mills (Marta), Reagan Mills (Cris-tina), Gabriela Ayala (Alejandra), Jillian Carter (Lucha), Shela Shenks (Blanca) and Leticia Marti-nez Meitzen who plays the quirky Carmen, a great comic relief at the center of all the pain in this story, making audiences laugh non-stop.

During the eight shows at the Johnny Carson Theater on Lincoln, from March 22-29, the audi-ence enjoyed a unique story that revolves around ten completely different women of a diverse range of ages, married to the Padilla brothers, who are out on the battlefield while the women try to survive their own fight: waiting for news from the frontlines while bonding over their situation.

Along with the particular nuances of each cha-racter, Hart included original music from Peruvian guitarist Daniel Martinez, who with his composi-tions of rumba-flamenco - played live - establishes a proper setting for the changes from one scene to the next, each with its own tone and feeling. The actresses even participate, moving the tables and chairs like in a choreographed dance, going from a kitchen setting to the dining room.

At the end of each show, the audience discussed the message of the play with members of the theater company as well as with Jasel Cantu, Public Infor-mation Officer of the Nebraska Latino American Commission (NLAC) who briefly explained the main symbolic elements of the magical realism where these women face the loss of their husbands.

opened a new clinic in northwest Omaha. The new clinic is located at 4229 North 90th Street. The clinic will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 pm. Worker AbuseAccording to a recent release by Nebraska

Appleseed, several civil rights groups and meat and poultry workers have testified before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) about the abuse workers face in meatpacking and poultry plants. According to Appleseed the coalition of organizations and workers is calling on the federal government to “enact work speed protections and oppose the dangerous rule proposed by the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) that would increase poultry line speeds.” Omaid Zabih, an attorney at Nebraska Applseed, pointed out that “it is clear that the policies and practices of America’s meat and poultry processing industry have created a health and safety crisis for its wor-kers.” Nebraska Appleseed and its partners will continue to raise awareness about this issue and call on the federal government to take action for the safety of workers. The play also had the help from El Centro de las Americas and Roger Garcia, director of that in-stitution, to promote the two workshops provided along with the shows, one from Martinez about musical composition, and the other about play-writing imparted by Meneses, who traveled here all the way from New York, where he lives.

“It’s about learning how to tell a story,” said Meneses, “since when you start the process for telling a story, the first thing you must find is a particular voice for each one of your characters. In my case, the first thing I do is understand their thoughts in order to feel their feelings.”

Meneses mentioned how the roles in “Las Herma-nas Padilla” came from observing his aunts, and he explained that the play takes place in Mexico: “the war-tinted theme is universal, and what these wo-men go through still takes place all over the world.”

Originally from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Meneses lived most of his time in Dallas, Texas. As the young-est member of his family, he began writing theater plays when he was 18. Currently 29, he calculates there are now 20 plays under his repertoire which are being showcased in New York, Austin, Chicago, San Diego, Minnesota, Iowa, and at the William-stown Theatre Festival.

As a graduate from the University of Texas in Austin, with a Master’s Degree from the Iowa Play-wrights Workshop, Meneses added that his interest for an all-female cast was born from the fact that the cornerstone in many Latino families is the mother figure: “My mother is my biggest inspiration, and, in fact, all of my favorite books and plays have been written by females. Unfortunately, in the theater said plays are almost non-existent because there are many more male writers and, therefore, most plays have a male as the lead character. But I’m bored by something so ordinary, which is why I like to cre-

ate female characters, as well as giving them a Latino voice.”

On that note, Meneses stated: “I’m a member of a group of New York writers (the award-winning Youngblood, of the Ensemble Studio Theatre), and I’m the only Latino among 20 professionals, so our presence in this area is not common, but the stories of Latinos also deserve to be told and hear.”

We must highlight that his work as a Latino cre-ator was recognized in 2010 with the Latino Play-writing Award from the KCACTF. Some of his best-known plays are The Boy in Black and Guadalupe in the Guest Room, this second one talks about the lan-guage barrier, something he experimented at home with his parent’s house, but which did not keep them from helping him in this career.

“My parents always showed a great artistic sensi-bility, and I grew up hearing my mother sing while my father played the guitar,” said Meneses, “so when I started to develop an interest for the theater, they supported my decision and proudly celebrated it, so I guess they saw something special in me.”

And even though Meneses added that “in the world of theater something very particular happens, and that is that people who work on this don’t do it for the money since, unfortunately, it’s not a very practical career to earn a living,” the young writer made it very clear that he’s happy with his choice “since you can lead a spiritually-rich life.”

For Meneses, theater is crucial “because the sto-ries are part of the community as a whole, and we learn how to live with the conflicts we witness, along with all the tragedies and dramas.”

“That’s why I’d like more Latino individuals, par-ticularly young ones, to go to the theater,” concluded Meneses, pleased with the outstanding work of Hart and of the very talented group of actresses “because it’s the first time they decided to represent the char-acters at the right age they must have for my play.”
