EL OBSERVADOR | www.el-observador.com2 DECEMBER 26 - JANUARY 1, 2015OPINION

With a masterful stroke of political genius impacting public policy, de-bate, and the economy of two nations, (u.S.a. and Cuba), President obama suprised all with his executive actions to norMaliZE forEiGn rEla-tionSHiPS with Cuba. all Hispanic americans received ‘un regalo’....a Christmas gift with this announce-ment. all Hispanics need to support the President’s executive action by emailing messages of support to their congressional elected offi cials, both Senators and Members of the House of the u.S.

Congress; Why do this?

Consider the following: only Con-gress may remove all existing embar-gos; encourage them to do that. full normal international relationships with Cuba would happen when the u.S. Congress does that. the President can only take executive action under existing law passed by the u.S.Congress 53 years ago after fidel Castro toppled the Cuban government of that time. the President is absolutely correct when stating that ‘a new approach is required. it is unreasonable to expect diffent outcomes from a foreign policy which has failed. His new approach is supported by the Cuban youth who grew up in america. the major resis-tance is from those surviving Cuban immigrants who lost all their per-sonal property and business interests. this elderly cohort is losing its politi-cal power and infl uence, especially in florida. this may swing florida into the democratic camp in the coming 2016 presidential election process.

also, by opening up travel and cultur-al exchanges, the hospitality industry in Cuba and airlines will benefi t. the Cuban small businesses which sup-ply goods and services to the Cuban hospitality industry will benefi t. Both economies, american and Cuban, will get a boost through the exchange of information by personal interactions. family gatherings will become easier and that is a good ‘Christmas Spirit’ gift to those surviving Cuban family members.

also important is the impact, requir-ing the u.S. Congress to enact actions which remove all current embargos. in addition to the Hospitality industry (tourism & hotels), the u.S. auto in-dustry stands to benefi t when shipping new cars to Cubans for the fi rst time in 53 years. their antique vehicles need replacement. Caterpilar Corporation is ready to export its heavy industrial equipment. also, Cuba is known for its sugar cane plantatiions. that cane sugar can be fermented into alcohols (ethyl, methyl, & isopropyl alcohol) which are excellent gasoline extenders. this technology exists; Brazil is using it; why not the u.S.a. to continue to re-duce its dependency on foreign crude oil?

Many americans are not conscious of the possible cash fl ow reductions to arabian royal families who are us-ing some of those crude oil revenues to covertly support terrorist groups. By reducing these revenues the cur-rent terrorist activities will become more diffi cult to sustain. that means that the wars in the MidEast will be-come local civil wars which permit our american military to withdraw while leaving behind ‘training brigades’. these brigades, over time, will enable local MidEast’s law enforcement per-sonnel, which will supply the ‘boots on the ground which our troops have fi lled since 2001.

these are the major long term op-portunities and outcomes of this ‘nor-malization of foreign trade’ initiated by President obama’s executive orders. Your job is to thank him for this Christ-mas gift and to encourage the u.S. Congress to ‘get back to work’ crafting public policy which continues the eco-nomic recovery of america as well as that of Cuba.

Ed. note: Sony Pictures’ comedy “the interview” is about two celebrity american journalists involved in a plot to assassinate north Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Screenings for the film, which was set to be released over the holiday season, have been cancelled after threats of violence to moviegoers from a group suspected to be linked to the government in north Korea. this follows the recent cyber attack on Sony Pictures also believed to have emanated from the communist country. the film’s cancellation has sparked a nationwide debate over whether or not it should be shown, and that debate has now spilled over into South Korea. naM intern Yeojin Kim spoke to several young South Koreans about their thoughts on “the interview.”

i feel uncomfortable with the movie. Korea is the only divided country in the world, but the South and north share the same language and history. i don’t know exactly how the film de-picts north Korea, but judging from the preview i can guess that it reflects america’s view of the country. So i wonder how it might shape people’s view of north Korea. My sense is this movie will only feed into existing preconceptions about north Korea. But the problem in north Korea is with the dictator-ship, not the country or its people.-- Subin Kim, 22

i recently saw a posting on facebook that showed interviews with people around the world who couldn’t even find Korea on a map. after seeing that, i wished that more people knew

and understood both north and South Korea. So in some ways i’m glad they made this film, which highlights an issue that even we in South Korea often pretend not to see. i’ve always felt that people around the world should be concerned with what is hap-pening in north Korea and the brutal dictatorship there. this film is a step in that direction. i can’t wait to see it!-- Mugun Kim, 23

Honestly, i don’t like the dictatorship in north Korea. But it’s going too far when a film is made about assasinating a real per-son, who happens to be the leader of the country. We all know the movie is just a fiction, but what if north Korea made a film about assassinating the president of the u.S? there have to be some lines. or maybe use a fictional character instead. other-wise, i don’t think this movie should be released.-- Yuna lee, 23

i’m not a supporter of north Korea, but i’m uncomfortable with america making a comedy about killing its leader, Kim Jong-un. it is true that most South Koreans have negative feelings about the Kim dictatorship, but it’s a shame that so many foreign countries so often ridicule that regime and its leader. also, i can’t help but wonder if north Korea was stron-ger than the u.S., would this film ever have been made.-- dahye Cheon, 22

i think this movie reflects the general view of north Korea held by most countries around the world. and that view is basically that the Kim regime in Pyongyang is a joke. Even north Korea knows that, which is why they perpetrated the cyber attack against Sony Pictures. they feel ashamed and are afraid of the release of a movie that reveals what they are. South Korea should release this movie. and i hope it makes its way into north Korea, so people there see how the world views their country.-- Hyeseen Kim, 22

america has made a lot of movies about WWii – about the u.S. fight against Hitler’s Germany or militarism in Japan – and more recently about the fight against terrorism. Most of these films set america up as the good guy, with the other country playing the villain. So if it wouldn’t be strange if amer-ica were to make a film about Saddam Hussein or osama Bin laden in the future, why is a comedy about Kim Jong-un such a big deal?-- Sangyun Kim, 25

San Jose, CADecember 21, 2014:

Wednesday, 12.10.14, the Shop With a Cop founda-tion of Silicon valley, put on its 7th annual Heroes and Helpers Holiday Shopping Spree. Sixty-one (61) under-served youth who attend San-tee Elementary School, were rewarded for their successful participation in the ‘read-ers are leaders” program which began with 200 stu-dents competing to become ‘a Hero’. their reading pro-ficiency improved very sig-nificantly. of the 61 students, eleven (11) student’s families had experienced the loss of a parent through domestic vio-lence and two children were from homeless families. all were treated to a fun-filled event at target Store which had provided each child with a $125 Gift Card used to buy gifts for their family members and themselves.

Each child was escorted by a police officer; treated to breakfast; played games; en-joyed being entertained by the San Jose Giant’s mascot “GiGantE’ along with the San Jose Earthquakes’ mas-cot “Q”.

over 100 police officers, rep-resenting 14 different police agencies, volunteered their time to escort these children through this unique shopping spree at a target Store. Santa Claus even made an appear-ance in a MErGE vehicle.

darrell Cortez, Executive director of Shop With a Cop foundation, said, “this pro-gram has an education com-ponent designed to close the ‘achievement gap’ for these disadvantaged children. the emphasis is on reading skills. two hundred (200) students are given a baseline test at the start of the school year. a sec-ond midyear test is given. and then a third test is given just

before this ‘Shop With a Cop’ Christmas shopping spree.

the 61 students who ex-celled by showing significant reading proficiency improve-ment are rewarded. the en-tire reading program is re-ward based. this gives each student an incentive to do well each and every school day. We want them to enjoy reading and learning.”

in addition, the foundation distributes new age appropri-ate books to the school at the beginning of each school year to instill competitive enthu-siasm and motivation. “We want the students to excel in school. We will continue to follow these students until the end of this school year.”

Shop With a Cop founda-tion, inc. has the belief that socio-economically disadvan-taged students can achieve ac-ademic success. it is commit-ted to enabling such students’ educational path, which cre-

ates a positive impact on the community.

the overall goal of this pro-gram is to foster better rela-tions between police and the community. it starts with the children changing their at-titudes, perceptions and ste-reotypes which children and families initially have towards police.

“Shop With a Cop founda-tion gives children an amaz-ing experience. one they’re not going to forget. for many, it’s their only joyful Christmas experience during this holiday season. “this event is about something very positive. it brings youth and police of-ficers together for one day in hopes of building a safer com-munity tomorrow. this mer-

its your support.” said Cortez.Supporting tax de-
