Good News Reflection December 31, 2017 Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph

Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14 or Gen 15:1-6; 21:1-3 Ps 128:1-5 or Ps 105:1-6, 8-9 Col 3:12-21 or Hebrews 11:8,11-12,17-19 Luke 2:22-40

Trust Jesus despite not understanding "Joy mixed with drama marks the fifth [joyful] mystery, the finding of the twelve-year-old Jesus in the Temple." Saint John Paul the Great wrote this In Rosarium Virginis Mariae, his interesting encyclical about the Rosary. He continued: "Here he appears in his divine wisdom as he listens and raises questions, already in effect one who 'teaches'. The revelation of his mystery as the Son wholly dedicated to his Father's affairs proclaims the radical nature of the Gospel, in which even the closest of human relationships are challenged by the absolute demands of the Kingdom. Mary and Joseph, fearful and anxious, 'did not understand' his words." We, too, often fail to understand the words of Jesus. His teachings challenge us to accept a more difficult life, a life of doing good to our enemies, turning the cheek and going the extra mile, a life of courageously standing up for the truth and adhering to high moral standards that are counter-cultural. Our preference, when living this way is inconvenient or unpleasant, is to rationalize and make excuses for our worldly behavior. But once we truly understand the demands of the Kingdom of God, we see their benefits and we obey gladly. Without this understanding, we have to simply trust that the words of Jesus are right and true. Like Mary and Joseph, we need to ponder in our hearts what we don't understand, while moving forward and doing what Jesus wants us to do. As challenging as this is, that's when we discover how amazing God can be. Questions for Personal Reflection: What teaching of the Church have you rationalized away so that you don't have to obey it? Or what teaching of Christ in the Sermon on the Mount (see Matt. 5,6,7) or elsewhere in the Gospels do you excuse yourself from? How much is your disobedience due to not understanding what is really being taught? What will you do to seek and gain a better understanding? Questions for Community Faith Sharing: How meaningful is the Holy Family to you? What is it about the relationships between Jesus, Mary and Joseph that appeals to you? What has this taught you about God's Kingdom?

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

There’s no more unusual setting to celebrate today’s Feast of the Holy Family than Barcelona, Spain and the towering unfinished sandcastle known officially as the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia. In 1882, the plan was hatched to build a vast place of worship in reparation for the revolutionary and liberal leanings of the city. The modern artist Antoni Gaudi dedicated his life to the pro-ject, living in the building, attending Mass daily, and giving up his personal wealth. When people pressed him to pick up the pace, he responded, “My client is not in a hur-ry.” (Gaudi’s cause for beatification is moving along, and he could be the first professional artist and architect to be beatified.) The Spanish Civil War, a disaster for the Catholic Church in which thousands of priests, brothers, and nuns were murdered, halted work in 1935. In the 1950s work began anew, speeded up by computers in the 1980s. Still, the final stage of construction is not due to end until 2026. If the original methods had stayed in place, it would take several hundred more years to complete the plan. So far there are eight towers, with four to go. The highest steeple is three feet shorter than the nearest hill, since the archi-tect didn’t want his work to surpass God’s artistry. The three faces of the basilica each have three doors, with the faces named Passion, Nativity, and Grace. The interior is crammed with geometric figures that almost seem to spin, crazy-quilt windows, spiral staircases, and jumbles of stat-ues and figures. Although inspired by ancient Gothic cathe-drals, the style is called Expressionist, and very little is left unexpressed by the masonry. If you can’t afford a visit, Sa-grada Familia maintains a web site, and virtual visits are free. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

BEARERS OF THE WORD

The Church has placed a number of notable feast days immediately after Christmas. The feasts of Stephen, John the Evangelist, and the Holy Innocents form a summary of the life lived in Christ, the Word made flesh. What do these have to do with the feast of the Holy Family, which

crowns the Octave of Christmas? These feasts remind us that suffering will occur in fulfilling the mission of Christ, and that we are all called to be bearers of this Word whose birth we celebrate.

We also see this manifested in the lives of Joseph and Mary, both of whom took social and religious risks in obe-dience to the will of God, and both of whom were open to the word of God sent to them from on high. In these ways they prefigured the life of Jesus himself.

Most likely, few of us found ourselves at Mass this past Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, but the essence of these feasts and the essence of the holiness of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus remain central, a holiness we celebrate today. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Notes from the Liturgist

3 points in 1 weekend: The Holy Family

The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God New Year (2018)

My dear friends, I have three points to share with you this weekend which I consider important as we continue to walk as pilgrim people.

The feasts we celebrate this weekend: the Holy Family, the New Year and the Solemnity of Mary as the Mother of God, are exactly the results of Mary’s “Fiat” to God. Mary said yes to God. That is why we remem-ber her today as the Mother of God, we honor her holy family, and take her as our Christian model to follow for the new year.

This weekend, we are going to celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. In the Catholic Church, the Feast of the Holy Family is a liturgical celebration in honor of Jesus, Mary and Joseph as venerable family. To-day’s feast presents us a great model which could bring out the inner resources and strength of each other in the family to make the family stable and whole. The feast of the Holy Family is very important liturgical cele-bration during the Christmas season. It makes us understand that the Incarnation is not just about the Divine Word made flesh but became part of human family. Jesus entered into every human’s heart and lives includ-ing to the aspect of the family life that satisfies it all and bring a path towards holiness.

Commonality among Jesus, Mary and Joseph was their faith in God. God was the center and the num-ber one value in each one of them. Jesus showed this clearly in the Gospel when he put his Father’s house above his earthly family. Mary accepted God’s plan in her life to be the mother of the Messiah whom the Jews were waiting for. Joseph obeyed God through his dreams, not bothering to consider the unfavorable consequences of his action in the Jewish customs and the laws. Indeed, the secret of unity and fruitfulness in the family is when God becomes the center of one’s life in the family and in any community.

Mary, the Holy Mother of God. On the 1st day of the year, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Mother of God. What a great feast to celebrate this very first day of the year. I believe that this special feast echoes that the Blessed Virgin Mary, who is the Mother of God, is also our Heavenly Mother. It is also echoes God’s divine progressive plan of salvation through the Virgin Mary.

New Year (2018). Most of us welcome this day by gathering as family and celebrate with lots of food, attending Mass, making New Year’s resolutions or all of it. And there are those who see it as just another day to face the challenges they have to face. But whatever it is my dear friends, New Year is a time for us to give thanks for all the blessings we have received in the past year and many more blessings we receive in the days to come and to give thanks most especially for the greatest gift He has given to us His only begotten Son.

– ACE TUPASI HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE!

The Next CCC: January 7th @ 9:45am

Topic: Mary and the Eucharist

THANK YOU!

Prayer Shawl Ministry would like to extend sincere thanks to

all of you that took time out of a busy schedule to support

the efforts in helping provide Christmas for over 200 foster

children in our community. Many hands made this possible

by knitting, sewing, and creating a generous outpouring of

love for these kids. Generous hearted individuals throughout

our parish and the Albany community joined Prayer Shawl

Ministry in fulfilling many Christmas hopes and dreams.

Volunteers joined together at the collection center located

at Hope Church to assemble over 200 baskets for all ages of youth. A big high five to Christian community

efforts to bring the love of Christ to the hearts of many. The photo features Berniece Darnell of St. Mary’s

with a member of Brookdale Senior Living Center with articles made for Christmas baskets. With Berniece’s

leadership a group of Brookdale residents came together in the spirit of Christian giving to produce a large

variety of gift items. In return these efforts gave back by fulfilling the desire to be of service to those in

need.

December 2017 Dear St Mary’s Parish Family, Thank you for being a vital part of Love In the Name of Christ of Linn County! So far this year phone volunteers have received

6,079 calls for help from people in our community. Church volunteers have responded by providing clothing, transportation, yard

work, visitation, firewood, medical equipment, diapers, furniture, moving crews, school supplies, household and hygiene products,

linens, holiday meals, by fixing cars, and building ramps. Each need met is a life touched by the Love of Christ shown through a

practical act of service. Let me share with you a few snap shots from 2017...

-Our medical ministry has delivered 682 hospital beds, wheel chairs, commodes, shower benches, Hoyer

lifts and other durable medical equipment to our neighbors in need. -This year in partnership with God’s Heart we gave backpacks containing both the gospel and school sup-

plies to 253 children, winter coats to 89 families and Christmas gifts to over 400 children! -Two dozen people found clothing in our new career closet for both interviews and new jobs

Thank you for your prayers, time, and generous financial support this past year. January will see our first Faith & Finances class

being offered with more life skills classes to follow. Please prayerfully consider giving a generous year end gift and together we can

join the Lord in transforming lives and our community throughout 2018 and beyond. If you are interested in learning more about Love INC please call us at 541-924-LOVE. May the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus make our hearts meek and humble like His and help us to carry out our family duties in a holy way. May we love one an-other as God loves each one of us more and more each day, and forgive each other’s faults as You forgive our sins. Help us, loving Father, to take whatever You give and to give whatever You take with a big smile. Immaculate Heart of Mary, cause of our joy, pray for us. Saint Joseph, pray for us. Holy Guardian Angels, be always with us, guide and protect us. Amen.” (Bl. Mother Teresa of Calcutta) Please join us for Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Adoration is available in the chapel 24 hours every day. For adoration outside of the 24-hour regular Thursday schedule, call the office for instructions and to enlist. Everyone is welcome. Dear Parishioner,

It gives me great joy to invite you to the upcoming catechesis to be given in our parish by a

team of itinerant catechists from the Neocatechuminal communities.

This catechesis for adults is an opportunity for all of us, as a parish, to listen to the announce-

ment of the Good News of the victory of Jesus Christ over death and all that which makes us

suffer … to listen and to experience the power of the Gospel which can change our lives.

Today, many people are experiencing various crises in their lives. On numerous occasions

Pope John Paul II acclaimed the experience of the Neocatechuminal Way as one answer to

these crises and a “valid way of Catholic formation.”

I am confident that we will all benefit from this catechesis and it will be a special period of

grace for our parish. I hope and pray this call to faith will resound in our hearts and increase

our faith as we embark on this journey together.

The catechesis will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays in the church, beginning Monday,

January 22nd at 7pm and continuing through Lent.

Feel free to bring a friend.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Edwin L. Sanchez
