MY FIRST FESTIVAL

Presentation

At a time when mainstream films for children and family audiences are becoming more and more formulaic and predictable, we are proud to present, for yet another year, a small festival aimed at encouraging young viewers in our country to discover great films and audiovisual productions from a broad, creative and plural viewpoint. Because, of course, blockbusters exist (and often of the highest quality, we do not deny this), but there are also many more modest productions that enrich our audiovisual panorama and which can also enrich the cinematic experience of younger viewers. Other voices, other rhythms, and other approaches to creative work that see it, not merely as a business, but as a means of artistic expression and a way of transmitting values. The programme we present at this, the fifth celebration of "My First Festival", is a thoughtful selection of works that, we feel, combine both artistic quality and this educational intent. More than seventy films from a score of countries around the world, complemented by educational materials, workshops, the chance for the children to vote for their favourites and, at some sessions, talks by the artists. All this, because we want children to be the real stars at My First Festival!

As in previous years, the Festival is divided into themed sections devoted to different types of content, suitable for particular interest or age groups. These sections are: International

Competition, in which some of the most outstanding works from around the world compete; Belgian

Animation, a selection of the finest children’s films made in Belgium, presented in cooperation with the Jeugdfilmfestival, a leading film festival for younger

viewers based in Antwerp; Film + Kids, a “cocktail” of short films for children from 2-4 years; A Window

onto the World, films that help us to discover different realities and lifestyles; All-Time Classic Films, featuring masterpieces from movie history; and Little Experiments, devoted to films that may be more experimental, but are still guaranteed to delight young viewers. Not only that, but the Festival will open with a session showcasing some veritable jewels of contemporary animation that are difficult to catch at commercial cinemas.

And, finally, we are pleased to announce that the Festival will be going On Tour around other towns in Catalonia (Olot, Figueres, Granollers...), as well as opening up to professionals seeking to present more unusual audiovisual content in their children’s programmes.

“My First Festival” is a not-for-profit initiative developed by the MODIband Cultural Association with support from Barcelona City Council and the Government of Catalonia. We should like to sincerely thank both these authorities and all our other partners and sponsors.

Nathalie Modigliani and Mireia Manén, directors of “My First Festival”

Blanca AlmendarizBlanca Almendariz is an expert on (and passionate about!) teaching film and visual art. For the last seven years she has worked at Drac Màgic, an organisation devoted to education and training in audiovisual culture and its use in educational, social and cultural activities. She was also a member of the team that established the education programme Construir Mirades[Building Gazes] to provide training in audiovisual language for schools. She has also worked as a programmer and co-director of Barcelona International Women’s Film Festival. Blanca Almendariz has drawn up film programmes and educational projects for various bodies and organisations (Filmoteca de Catalunya, Mercat de les Flors, “La Caixa” Foundation, IMEB, Modiband) and has given many film workshops, specialist lectures and film forums.

Iris VerhoevenIris has been director of the European Youth Film Festival of Flanders (Jeugdfilmfestival) for more than five years now. The Jeugdfilmfestival takes place in both Antwerp and Bruges at the same time and is the most important children’s film festival in Belgium. With her colleagues, she launched the “cinema in bed” project, establishing a digital platform in order to take the festival to hospitals. Before joining the festival organisation, Iris worked at the University of Antwerp, researching into contemporary and audiovisual art. Today, she is also a member of the board of the VOBK (Union of Visual Arts Organisations of Flanders). As a student, she spent two years in Barcelona, studying Catalan Language and Art and Spanish Language. As a result of her love for Barcelona, she now has a Catalan husband and works with both Sonar kids and My First Festival :-).

Linus FreixenetLinus is twelve years old who is mad about films - that’s why he wanted to be a member of the festival jury. Linus not only loves watching movies, but also enjoys rating them and finding out about them. That’s why he has a notebook, in which he writes about every film he sees. He awards points to each, and notes when it was made, the director, the leading actors...even a brief summary of the plot. He likes surfing the Web to read all he can find about the cinema. That’s what we call a good film fan!!!

Duna LasherasThe last film that ten-year-old Duna saw was Tim Burton’s Frankeweenie, and what she most liked about it was the ending (which we are not going to give away here…). But, apart from going to the cinema, Duna says that she watches shorts and features at home every Friday. What she loves most is to imagine she is the star of the film and share their feelings and adventures. She’s dying to become a jury member and give her opinion about the shortlisted films!

Daniela TatianaDaniela has just turned eight. She believes she is very fair-minded, and so would be a good member of the festival jury. She loves the cinema, and talking about films after she has seen them. One of the last films she saw was Brave, which she really enjoyed. Daniela admires how the princess defies her fate and fights for freedom and nature above all. Perhaps there is a little of the indomitable princess in Daniela? :-)

Gemma CalvoGemma is seven years old and went to the cinema for the first time when she was two. Her parents love movies, and encourage her to share their passion. Gemma has been to My First Festival before, and last year she stood for the jury, though she was not finally selected. The last film she saw was Hotel Transylvania, at its premiere during the Sitges Festival!

FILMS FORM ALL TIMESThis section takes us on a journey through time to rediscover, with our children, films and artists who made their mark on a period or style in film history. From silent comedies by such directors as Chaplin and Keaton, to classical musicals such as Mary Poppins, not forgetting the 1980s hit movie Back to the Future.

My First Festival and the Catalan Film Institute have invited Le Philharmonique de la Roquette, a French company that specialises in composing original music and playing live to accompany film showings live, to present two of their own film-concerts. In the Trio de còmics film-concert, we can enjoy three shorts by three of the silent movie greats. Chaplin, Lloyd and Keaton will take us through floods, epic chases and other surprising adventures.

VOTING AND REVIEW COMPETITION

The Review Competition takes another step forward in encouraging children to take part by inviting them to become journalists, young critics. In this guise, they will write a film review, following guidelines and using an educational guide designed by MPF for the occasion. The competition is open to children from the age of 7 years. There will be two prizes per age group, and the winners will receive a pack of JOVI products.

We at My First Festival want children to be the real protagonists. The whole programme is drawn up with children in mind, and we want to hear their opinions, reviews and criticisms. Voting forms will be given out at all family sessions so that each child can give their opinion of the whole session and tell us the film they liked most. Moreover, at official International Competition sessions, our young spectators will be invited to vote for the Audience Award.
