AfterbeingconnectedtotheworkofSaveAFamilyPlaninIndiaforthepasteighteenyearsofmylife,Ifinallyhadtheopportunitythispastyeartotakeanincrediblejourneythathaschangedmylifeforever.SinceIwasayoungboy,IhavealwayssupportedafamilythroughfundsthatIeitherworkedfordoingjobsonthefarmwhereIlived,orfrombirthdayorChristmasgifts.Soitwasarealdreamofminetomeetsomeofthesefamiliesinpersonandseeformyselfhowtheylivedandexperiencetheirculture.Nothingcouldhavepreparedmeforthemanynewsights,soundsandsmellsofIndia!Itwasbothabeautifulandsadcountrytovisit…withextremewealthandextremepoverty.IhadmanygreatandmovingexperiencessuchasarrivingatthehomeofafamilythatIsupportedinCochinforsixyearsandwalkingintotheirsmallhomeandseeingaframedphotoofmyselfontheirtable.TothinkthattheycherishedthatphotoandreallydidthinkaboutmeallthewaybackinCanadabroughttearstomyeyes.Itwasamazingtoseehowwelltheyweredoing. DespitethesimplicityofthehomesthatmanyofthefamiliesthatIvisitedlived,theywerealwayssohospitablewithprovidingmewithtea,biscuitsandevenachancetotrytraditionalfoodssuchasgreenmangoswithhotchilies.Theyinvitedalltheirfamilyandneighbourstocomeandseeme.
I travelednorth toDelhi to visit theSAFPCanadianGovernmentsupported program SPED III. This took me to Faridabad, Haryana whereI visited the Sanjoepuram Children’s Village (for physically and mentallychallengedchildren);DaleelgarhVillage,wheretheyweredoingmanyprojectsincluding: legalawarenessclassesondomesticviolenceanddowry;specialprograms fordrop-outgirls; adult literacyprogram; first aid kitdistributionandawarenessonfirstaidmeasures;medicalcamps;modeltoilets;non-formaleducation;pesticidefreekitchengardens;awarenessprogramonsafedrinkingwater;spokenenglishcourse,tailoring&beauticiancourse;andyouthclubs.We visited the Village of Arua where SAFP was undertaking a non-formaleducation program for the local children who were not attending regularschool.Theyweresohappytobelearning!
I then traveled back to Kerala and had the privilege of visitingthetombofSAFP’sfounder,MonsignorAugustineKandathilinVaikom,whocontinues to inspire so many. After a long winding drive up through themountainsfilledwithteaplantationsinMunnar(WesternGhats),wedrovetoaremoteMuthuvanTribalsettlementtovisittheGirijothyLowerPrimarySchoolandhadawonderfuldayinteractingandsharingasimplelunchwiththestaff,studentsandparents.ThisprojectisdonewithSAFPinpartnershipwiththeDioceseofIdukki.
Anotherexperience Iwillcherishwasspendingtimeat theDonBosco–SnehaBhavan–home forstreetboys&theValsalyaBhavan–home forstreetgirls located inPallurathury,KeralawithDirector,Fr.JoeFernandez.Whileitwasshockingtohearsomeofthestoriesofthechildrenandtheirexperiencesoflivingonthestreets,bussheltersandtrainstations,itwasgreattoseewhatnewopportunitiestheyhadthrougheducation,sportsandalivinginafamilyatmospherewithlovingandsupportivestaffandvolunteers.
Forthefinalpartofmytrip,ItravelledtothenorthernpartofIndia,startingfirstinKolkata,West Bengal. There I had the opportunity to visit theMissionaries of Charity –MotherHouse toseeMotherTeresa’stomb.Kolkatawasadifficultplacetobe–withsomanyfamilieslivingonthestreetsandsomuchcongestionandgarbage.OursimpleaccommodationatSevaKendra,DioceseofCalcuttawasarefugeattheendoftheday.
Mytripwouldnothavebeencompletewithouttheuniqueexperienceofbeingonatrain!WemadeourwaytoVaranasi,UttarPradeshwheretheDirector,Fr.GyanPrakashoftheDioceseofVaranasi - PurvanchalGramin Chetna Samati – Centre for RuralDevelopmentmet us. By jeepwethentravelledonaroughroadforapprox.5hourstoreachRaghopur,Ballia,whereweattendedtheinaugurationofthefoodrationprogramfortheNagarBlockandrepresentativesfrom20villagesandgovernmentofficialsattended.OurnextstopwastheVillageofJetwarwherewesawastreetplayandlearnedoftheotherSAFPsupportedprojectssuchasincomegeneration;improvementofsanitationfacilities,drainage,androads.
IwillneverforgetthelocalanimatorsandcoordinatorsoftheprogramsandthededicatedstaffattheSaveAFamilyPlanIndiaoffice.Moreimportantly,IwillcherishmytimethatIhadwithsomeofthemostcourageousandhardworkingfamiliesthatIhaveevermetinmylife.Despitetheirmanychallengesandissues,theyweremakingadifferenceintheir lives. IttrulywasaonceinalifetimeexperiencethatIhopeonedaywillbeaninspirationforothers.

These women near Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, have received job cards from the local government and will now be able to participate in the national rural employment guarantee scheme, which ensures participants 100 days of paid work per year.
Children near Kochi, Kerala participate in an Environmental Awareness Rally organized by one of SAFP’s partner organizations, Cultural Academy for Peace.
Children near Balasore, Orissa attend classes organized through SAFP’s Community Development Program.
IrfanSalimisfromthePuthenjunnuvillageinBathery,Kerala,SouthIndia.Heisashybutdeterminedmanwhowasbornphysicallydisabledandhasnouseofeitherofhislegs.Tohelpearnalivingforthefamily,hiswifeHafsacleanshouses.Theyhavetwochildren;anelderdaughter,Tahseen,whoisstudyingfifthgradeandayoungerdaughter,Asifyawhoisstudyingsecondgrade.
Both daughters suffer from tuberculosis and need expensivemedicine and treatment,which the familycannot afford. The Family Development Program staffmembers haveworkedwith the family to find asuitableincomegenerationprojectforIrfanthatwouldgivethefamilymorefinancialstability.
Irfanwasabletoattendabicyclerepairworkshopandwasmotivatedtobeginasmallbusinessusinghisnewskill.Ashegainedmomentumandexcitement,heexpressedhisdesiretostartasmallsnackshopnear
theirhouseaswell,astherewerenoneintheneighborhood.Nowheissuccessfullyoperatingbothofhisbusinessesandhasaccessedagovernmentresourcethatprovidedhimwithathreewheeledmotorbike,allowinghimtocompletehistasksmorequickly.
Heisnotonlyanexampleofhowthisprogramcanallowafamilytobecomeself-reliant,butheisasourceofinspirationforothersinhiscommunity.Hedoesnotallowhisdisabilitytolimithim.
An Inspiration to the Community - Overcoming Disabilities
Villagers meet with a local elected official to submit a memorandum to address the issues of the village in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. SAFP’s programs strive to foster and strengthen relationships between communities and the local governement to help ensure that resources reach those in need.
SAFP does not spend money on fundraising and relies heavily on word-of-mouth to spread the news about our work.
